Why are people on US boards so touchy?

Its the moderators of this message board, Head over to the Purchasing DVC forum and make a post that says you want to buy saratoga becuase its economical but you dont plan to stay there. Guaranteed a moderator stopping just short of calling you an idiot will tell you in a gruff tone to buy where you want to stay. There are so many people on this board like that, agree with me or I will troll you, lol I can go on and on but I wont. I was once active on disbaords, only here recently becuase I wanted ROFR stats. Otherwise I stay away. Disney is a happy place, many people here are just bitter and why deal with that, there are other boards with better people on them.

MOD - OT excuse me for going into detail but the above opinion needs a counter point IMO. If not, please remove my comments.

I look at the DVC scenario you use as an example from a totally different perspective. I'm a pre-SSR owner. Not difficult to realize when so many units came into inventory when that resort opened, the 11 month window quickly became more of an advantage when booking at one's resort.

Add in the development of professional renters wherein unused points are booked quickly within the 11 month premium & walking of reservations, well it can be a challenge to get what you want at your own resort exactly at the 11 month window!

Noobs (just considering buying in whether resale/direct) need to know the reality of booking availability. Especially, as it pertains to studios and the popular time periods/resorts. Regulars routinely reiterate this valid point to save one from disappointment & coming back & posting how crappy DVC is when they can't book a non SSR resort @ 7 months.

IMO The mods and others on DVC boards (me included) via responding to this sort of question that comes up at least weekly are doing those getting ready to invest a chunk of change a real solid - Buy where you want to stay.

I'm on those boards (I'm on most of them) and I disagree. I don't hear anything near "idiot" in the tone over there.

If someone is new and they are asking for info, those with long standing info are going to give that info.

Maybe get active again and see the unhappiness when someone who bought x resort with no plans to stay there then can't get their wanted resort for several trips in a row because times have changed. Then you'll seee why the educational urge is so strong in the oldies. Where you're hearing "they are almost saying idiot" I hear "they are wording this strongly to make sure the person understands that this isn't THE best idea". No one wants to see people throwing their money away.

There was a recent post where someone actually stated that they had gotten wrong info about booking in early December, and therefore bought at a resort they didn't want, and then tried to book elsewhere at 7 months and couldn't. If only someone had worded something strongly enough before he bought that would have helped him!

We are planning our first trip to US this summer. I've noticed the regulars on these boards can be very touchy if anyone dislikes the smallest thing about Universal. I'm beginning to think they have "short man syndrome" here. I don't understand the defensiveness when any kind of criticism comes up. And, the first thing they usually do is put down WDW...even if it's not part of the discussion. Just my own observation.

1) I enjoy Universal, SeaWorld, and Busch, and visit them.
2) Don't see any reason to condemn or "put down" those parks.
3) Sure they are different than Disney, but
. . . Italian food is different than Greek food
. . . I enjoy both
. . . Eating the same food or always doing the same parks could be limiting and/or boring
4) If one wants to get touchy over differences, let's discuss
. . . Coke versus Pepsi
. . . Ford versus Chevy
. . . Single Malt versus Blended scotch
5) Now THOSE are discussions worth having!

While your point is valid, I would say the same applies to anyone who dislikes the smallest thing about Disney. For example, try starting a thread criticizing the Disney CM's and you'll instantly have 20 posters who reply stating that the CM's are the greatest people since Ghandi.

YEa I'd say it's a 2 way street too. Also I think part of it comes to from Universal getting knocked more easily and for doing some stuff that Disney will get praised for. However I'dsay it's becoming a little more normalized for expereinces so overall GP is probably getting more open to both. Universal has really stepped up it's game int he last decade and looks to continue going forward. While Disney is finally doing new big additions which it doesn't do too often

I think that's definitely true. More and more people are going to Universal and coming back and saying that it was pretty awesome, let's do that again while at the same time they aren't seeing big changes at Disney.

I know I was impressed by Universal. It's not my preferred experience but it's definitely not the red headed step child that a lot of Disney lovers make it out to be. The people I know who are actually really down on it have not been at all or it has been more than a decade. I will say that I'm just looking at it from a theme park perspective- NOT a resort perspective- because I feel like when I get into fights over this with real life friends and family, it always comes down to resorts or shopping. Well, sure Disney is superior to them in those ways, but how many first timers actually come for those reasons? My own reasons for not liking Universal have to do with the atmosphere and the simulator rides- but the former is a theme park thing and the latter is increasingly a future thing at even Disney.

Forgot about this thread........

Interestingly I notice the OP hasn't been back to respond to replies of any of her criticisms.

Guess maybe it is the threads that I read, because I have never noticed the negativity or criticisms that some have mentioned. Other than on this thread...:teeth:

This thread is still here???? I really do believe from the bottom of my heart that those of us on the Universal Boards are some of the most welcoming people ever and that we have great info to impart to those willing to venture to the Dark Side. Theme Park lovers everywhere...most of us are not judgemental, petty, sensitive, biased or anything...and...we have cookies.

Most of the new posters here really want real information about Universal Orlando and Islands of Adventure and we give it. Kind of ... that's it. I have never seen "Oh it is so much better than WDW" or "I never would go back to WDW" or "WDW is lame" or "Don't you dare criticize my favorite theme park" or anything like that...ever.

The fact that the OP did not check back in sort of says it Homies.

Why wouldn't it be?

Why wouldn't it be?

Because it's not the CB where threads can run and run.......and run.......and run......saying the same old thing.

Threads like these come along every so often. I've only been here 10 years and seen my fair share of them over the years........they usually disappear fairly quickly. It gets boring reading someone having a go at Universal, hotels, rides and so on.........just because they don't like them or want to go there.

You never see a regular poster on the Universal boards go over to the Disney focussed parks and make derogatory and negative comments about the posters or parks over there.

There are two ways to deal with threads that you dislike. 1) Report it to the mods or 2) Ignore it

You are talking to the choir here...

When a thread goes South it no longer serves a purpose in the darkside forums

In the UO section of the Disboards we have 4 subtopics

Basically we are a forum that provides information and facts through stickies that will guide those seeking information about UO
Hotels on and off site, tickets, transportation, etc

We also have many that will provide accurate info from the website so readers will have an answer to their questions

We also provide information about Seaworld, Discovery Cove, Aquatica and Busch Gardens

Trip report forums is where many can share and help others based on their personal experiences

To have an occasional new thread to serve no purpose but to start controversy, can be moved in the future to the proper section in the Disboards

I can close threads once they no longer serve their purpose or redirect them to the proper place on the boards

I never understand the "over here and over there" comparisons. I post in this group on all of the forums on every subject about every park if it catches my attention. Do people really just commit to one board and stick with it? That's so strange to me.

Not strange to me.

I don't go to Disney or Seaworld, last went to Disney in 08/09......so have no real opinion on either. It's not a case of committing to one board or another........at least not for me, don't think it's that deep.

I can answer some questions on Universal........it's nice to be able to help newbies with their questions.......I can't answer questions on Disney and have no reason to question others about Disney.

I'm glad you post all over the boards, but please don't think it's strange for some us that don't feel the need.

I can only speak for myself but I post in many of the forums and threads
I read all sections of the Dis

I started out in the cb when I was a new poster then moved to all the Disney sections of the Dis

Learned so much about everything
Did my first trip to disney in 1974
Relied on books that were available in order to learn more about orlando and parks
Yearly trips were more organized on my part since I followed tips from others postings

Thrilled when I found the Disboards in 2000
Information at my fingertips !

In 1995 I ventured out to other sites in Orlando
Have hit all parks and entertainment in Florida that interested me
So since then, I read whatever boards that are online

And when I see any post about the Adventurer Club, I read it and weep since it is gone
Absolutely loved going to it

The UO forums don't have many conversational threads ( just chit chat)
Something about nothing is the only one we have

Sometime a thread in the UO sections turn into an exchange of information but seldom becomes personalized and off track
But when they do, if all are playing nice not an issue

When a thread turns confrontational and derailed, it no longer serves a purpose to provide info to the op's original question for help or direction

When we get so far away from the original question from a newbie, and topic changed, we can't always get the conversation back on track
So it would be time to relocate the thread and let it continue in another forum
