Why add-ons?

My wife and I are looking forward to our first visit home this summer at BCV. My question deals with the add-ons that people talk about getting. How do most people use 50 point add-ons and what are their advantage? Thanks in advance.

Many people (not all) find that their initial purchase of points is not enough. I think people are conservative for the most part when buyng points and are reluctant to go all out. Then after trying DVC, people find that they really like it and realize that they need more points. There is nothing magical about 50 points other than that is the level that DVC will finance you at. You can purchase as few as 25 points for an add on or as many as the limit allows.

I think 50 points gives you more options in getting that extra few days, or a 1 bdrm instead of a studio. Remember you can keep adding on as many times as you want to !!!

When we purchased, we did the 230 points because we didn't need to finance that amount. A year later, we added on 150 points to get us to the total we really needed. It is also nice to have two contracts so if you want to "downsize" you can sell off just one.

As to 50 points....If you bank and borrow, you have access to 150 every third year, so that is a stay at that resort.

I'm probably the odd ball hear, I did an 29 point add-on! Sounds odd, when we bought resale the it was for 196 points, another odd amount, so adding on 29 gave us 225, which is the perfect amount for the 4 of us, plus I was able to get my use year at VWL, so nothing confusing when trying to book trips.

We're on a waitlist for another add-on now because we're in the red again with our points and we have so many places we would like to go in the next few years. We started with a 230 point resale contract. It wasn't long before we realized we needed more. We put our name on a waitlist with our resale agent, but then our DVC Guide called us with an add-on opportunity so we thought an even 300 would do. Then, our resale agent called with a great deal on a 40 pt add-on. Now, we're waiting for the call from our DVC guide again about our waitlist. We think an even 400 would do it for awhile. If we were just using our points for WDW, we probably wouldn't need more. But, we love to try out the Concierge Collection locations. We need enough pts to cover our annual WDW trip, plus our annual ski trip to CO, and then those extra just to visit new places trips.

I like to go in December - so I have 60 points at VWL and 50 points at BWV - both places I do a studio for 5 days during December - and I don't have to go through the wait-list - when I want to be at BWV for Dece no problem I have the points, same with VWL - most of my points 240 are at OKW - so my other visits - when the place is not decorated for Christmas - are taken care of too.

I have six contracts (master and five add-ons), but on my first contract I made a mistake. I bought 450 points all on one contract. This would make it harder to sell if I ever had to sell (of course, only in extreme emergency). On the other hand, 50 point contracts would sell like hotcakes, and may even command a higher per point price.

Good luck....
