Who's Goofy??

Don't forget the roadways around the water stations. I finally decided the icy stops were pre-dawn and along Bear ISland in the shad. Some stops threw out Powdered PowerAde on the roads for traction.

They fianlly but some sand from the golf courses on the ice!

I'll never forget all those poor frozen athletes going back to the side of the road to find something to put on. It's times like that that you realize we are all brothers and sisters of sport.

Those that finished that amazing race can surely be proud. It was an awesome accomplishment. Those that went as far as they could can be proud of their courage, there is no shame in giving your all and coming up short.

Agreed....

This was a wierd weather day for sure. I was in everything I owned pre-start. Peeled off the 1988 wind suit at the tent for safe keeping, The sweat pants came off at the gun. The sweatshirt stayed on through the loop around Epcot then tossed at the mile 4 ice station. The cotton long sleeved jersey came off at mile 10 - the northern end of the course. The ear band at 13 when I saw Mary again. Finally the gloves at mile 20 for the photo. Danged if I forgot about heading north at mile 21.5. Froze beyond belief through the remainder of the race.

This will be my second Goofy. I ran NYC three weeks ago and while I had fun, it was not a good run- twisted my ankle and got sick which I have never done during a race. Since then, I have had a hard time getting my motivation up to run. Any advice?

We are warriors, it's what we do. We win some we lose some but we never back down.

You are actually in the traditional recovery period. Takes about a day a mile for full recovery. The added negative stressors may add to the recovery. Hopefuly, you are doing some x-training and light runs - as much as your ankle will allow.

The funk will soon clear, also. Reality will hit soon and you will mentally be ready to push into training again. Note that to allay fears, make sure you don't just jump in long again. Work up to a manageable long distance by Christmas. You will be good to go

For real! I started with about 4 layers on top, and at least 2 on the bottom. And 2 hats and 2 pairs of gloves on each hand! Most of the extra clothes were off by the time I got through DHS, and I had just tossed the 2nd pair of gloves, when I hit that stretch heading to the Boardwalk and started freezing again in the wind!

Hint for those reading who are wondering where all these clothes came from and went to: Some people go to Goodwill and buy some extra outerwear (sweats, etc), knowing they will toss it. I happened to find some really good deals at Academy and Walmart (track suit--jacket and pants--for $10), so had bought new "throwdown" clothes. My opinion was that I didn't want to take the chance on Goodwill not having things that would fit me to run in.

These extra clothes are tossed off to the side of the course as you warm up--and yes, please be considerate and toss off the side of the road, not in the middle of the street where people could trip. Disney picks them all up and washes and sorts them for donation to charities. I believe they said they collected about 27,000 lbs of clothing to donate in 2010.

DH is running Goofy again (we did 2010 - I have thrown in the towel)

A few WISHers were at the first water stop - I saw they delivered sand, tried to explain to the head volunteer we need to put out that sand - he said no, that was to keep the wooden flat from going away (really some such nonsense)

I explained about black ice, he laughed, and turned, promptly slipping on black ice - didnt matter he was not going to put out that sand!

As we were handing out the water (we were told that the Dasani has sodium in it and wouldnt freeze! lol) a layer of ice was forming - we smashed the cups to try and break the ice - and of course tried to inform the runners it was "ICE water"

it was shocking.

I did the marathon in 2010 and have to sheepishly admit that I LOVED that weather to run in! I had trained in similar temps so I knew exactly what to wear to stay comfortable and enjoyed the Powerade slushies! :lmao:

One thing that really helped was very cheap. I had gone to WalMart and bought a pack of black men's tube socks (the kind with no heel bump-out). I cut straight along the toe for my fingers and then a small side hole for my them and pulled them up over my arms. Much cheaper than arm warmers from the running store and I had no problem ditching them along the way! I promise they looked okay; even my teenaged DD wore them.

I'm going Goofy this year but will admit that I am hoping for some more moderate temperatures!

You folks writing about the cold weather in 2010 might have to think about the opposite weather for 2012. Our weather has not been normal this year and I think it will continue into next year.

I have a new pair of Asics Gel Nimbus 13 coming in today from Running Warehouse to replace my 1 year old Nimbus 12. Will put on a couple of walks before next weekend's Space Coast Half then use the old pair for the half in January and the new pair for the full. Last night DW was talking about signing up for the 5K again and if so then it will be back to back Dopey's.

Had to quote myself on this from 11/18 because I was WRONG.

Walked the Space Coast Half this past Sunday in 2:11:12 in the new Asics. What a difference. I plan on walking a 20+ miler Saturday AM while at WDW and providing the shoes feel good for the longer walk I will order another pair so no more old shoes.

While at the SC Expo, the Brooks guy I spoke with said their Glycerin 9 or Ghost shoes would be good for me. Might try them after January.

Getting ready for the 18 miles this weekend. Love being out in it cool crisp time of year.

Oh how I hope you're right. Moderate...cross your fingers for moderate weather.

I'm hoping it will be warm enough to leave some of the throw aways at home. I've been saving old sweats and sweatshirts that would usually end up in our goodwill bag for awhile, and none of them are small or easy to pack. I've also been saving a few heat sheets from some fall races. Do those typically do a good job of keeping you warm pre-run? Whenever I've gotten them I was typically close enough to my car that I didn't notice whether it kept me warm or not...

I am not a 100% believer in patterns from year to year, but this IS the year where we should expect a really hot weekend again. It has been since 2007 since we had a weekend where hot was a real issue. If not this year, then in 2013..... Yuck

As far as leaving clothing at home.... Not me, I have my travel throw down clothing in a bag. I bring everything that I feel I could need. 2003 comes to mind. Weather was expected to be rather warm as folks left for the weekend..... then a front came down quickly. The Saturday was blustery and Sunday cooler than planned.

For the record, I am expecting temperatures in the low 50s for the start.

I go to Goodwill and buy my throw off stuff, I go back and pick it up when I get done if it's still there after a local race and I've managed to use one coat all year.

The Goofy medal at the las vegas expo yesterday and got a little choked up. Can't wait!!!

It's coming up now. Only 5 weeks away and for me, one long run left 2 weeks from now.

I'm thinking that I'll really be able to do this and walk away from it upright.

Can't wait. My first Goofy, but did the Full last year.

Been running back to back long miles on Saturday/Sunday for the last month or so. Did my first 20 miler of this training cycle on Saturday and followed with a 10 miler on Sunday.

Surprisingly feel pretty good today. Very little soreness.

Great job on the back to back long runs. They work well. I ran 10 on Saturday and 20 on Sunday. Did my first marathon in 2010 in Disney & ran Goofy 2011. I'm in for Goofy again in 12'.

I also LOVED the cold weather in 2010. I had not trained properly and knew that if the weather had been on the warm side, I would probably not be able to complete the marathon portion of the Goofy (based on my WDW marathon run in 2008). Of all the races I have completed (40+ halves, 2 fulls), I have never felt as good after a race as I did that full in 2010. The next day, I was not sore at all. I have to attribute a lot of that to the cooler weather.

Good luck to all those attempting Goofy this year! Many of us will be rooting for you along the sidelines! :cheer2:
