WHOLE school closed Monday due to pink eye

Now, I have no problem with what they're doing (cleaning and disinfecting) and, I wish they had done this about 2 weeks ago when DD got it in both eyes but, I feel the 'notice' given is somewhat inadequate.

There was a 'mention' in the weekly newsletter about checking your child's eyes every morning and, if infected, keep them home. This mention has been made for several weeks now.

On a separate sheet of paper, they made the 'announcement' that the whole school would be closed due to the numerous cases of both students AND teachers getting this.

I just feel bad for the parents that don't check their kids backpacks right away. I saw the notice about 1-1/2 hrs after school, I wasn't even home yet but, I called my boss right away.

I feel like going to school Monday morning and, when some kids show up (which I KNOW they will), offer to watch those kids whose parents didn't see the 'announcement'. Taking off work, last minute, can be such a pain for parents sometimes. I know first-hand.

I am hoping that on Sunday, the school will begin the phone-call chain that we currently have in place, just as a back-up but, who knows?

Yep, that bad I guess. Kelly is out 6/9 and, Matt is out 6/11. My last day, til September, is 6/8. (I have Cubs tickets for the afternoon of 6/9.)

Wow! How many kids in this school? I've never heard of
Pinkeye closing a school.

A friend was just telling me this week her DS was sent home from school until the pinkeye went away, but closing an entire school sounds like a drastic measure

This is the first time I've ever heard of a school closing due to pink eye. The worst thing is that you can prevent the spread of it so much easier than things like influenza.

I think they should have cleaned over the weekend instead of closing the school?

Maybe 120. It's a small Lutheran school.

ITA but, since this is a school/church, they have activities over the weekend, including 4 church services so, I guess parental helpers would be slim.

Our school was closed once due to influenza. So many students and teachers had it. I had pink eye last week and it was no fun. Thankfully no one else in my family got it.

Thankfully, no one else but DD got it as well, in our house anyway. It's really just a NUISANCE if anything. Hard to keep a healthy, feeling-good kid home when there's nothing 'else' wrong with them but, I understand, of course.

I'm sorry that you are going through this but I have to say that it's the parents responsibility to look at their backpacks, not the school's responsibility to call. Since it's a small school they may do that , but I cannot imagine doing this in my kids schools and calling 1500+ homes, not everyone is home or has answering machines. I think they should have cleaned up the school over the weekend and not monday.

I remember having pink eye when Michael was a baby. The doctor told me that he less chance of getting it if I watched my hands 30 times a day.

It WORKED! It's amazing what we spread with our hands!

As for the parents who didn't know, they WILL find out! There's always ONE in every school who is clueless!

Michael's last day is Friday, thank you GOD!!
