Hi, all! My hubby and I are travelling to Disney World at the beginning of March with our dd who will be 17 months. Our last trip, she was 5 months and nursing exclusively, so I never researched my question: Is whole milk readily available at the parks and/or resorts? We will be stating at the Grand Floridian.

Thanks!

I think you should be able to get it at the resorts for sure- not sure about in the parks.

During our 2006 trip DH stopped in the resort shop (@Pop) to get milk & donuts for a quick breakfast. DD start drinking hers in the morning and complains it 'tastes' bad. I'm thinking... surely Disney didn't have expired milk in the case :confused3 Turns out it was whole milk! She's a 1% girl and didn't like it at all- DS, who would drink heavy cream, loved it! Next time DH noticed and got 'regular' milk for us.

All that to say... I think they carry a variety. You could call the GF directly to be sure...407.824.3000 (someone correct me if I have the wrong number... going by my 2007 Passporter)

I've never had a problem finding whole milk in parks or resorts.

You can also buy Horizon Organic single serve boxes. They're great, they don't even need to be refrigerated before you open them. They're a little on the expensive side, but you're getting the good organic stuff. They even come in Chocolate Vanilla and Strawberry :)

They;re sold at many supermarkets, and you can even buy them at amazon.com!

Thanks, that is actually a great idea! Do they sell it in Whole milk though? I have seen the flavored and it was low fat.

I did have a problem finding whole milk at the parks actually. Not every CS place or store had it. They had milk of course, but not WHOLE milk for the baby. The TS restaurants we ate at mostly did though and they had whole at the resort store. I did end up giving DS (thirteen months at the time) 2% a few time...didnt hurt him at all.

I never seemed to be near the right cs location that had one lol and also.. I did notice 2 different sizes. I cant remember what the sizes were now though. I would use a snack credit on the large one but pay cash on the smaller one

Hey, Neighbor! We're down in Chester County, in Valley Twp.

I actually think they don't sell it in whole milk. :( I just figure a bit of 2% here and there won't hurt DD, either. She gets whole all the time, anyway. I figure, she's not on the skinny end of the scale, so a little less fat won't starve her.

I was there last September (feels like YEARS ago) and I don't recall having a hard time finding whole milk, but then again, if 2% or 1% is what they had, I didn't make a fuss. DD didn't notice anyway!

I would buy my son's whole milk in the gift shop of our resort, All Star Sports. I bought a quart a day, I think. One time I got it at a counter service restaurant in DHS. Some places had it and others didn't so I just kept it in the fridge in the room and gave it to him when we were in the room. Call the resort you are staying at and ask if they sell it and how large the containers are. It was a bit pricey though.

OP here -- Thanks for all of the replies. I will call the GF to see if they have it. I wouldn't really care if we were only going to be there a day or two, but we are going to be there for 7 nights and she still gets a large percentage of her calories/protein from the milk.

We took DD to Disney World in May (13 months) and November (19 months) and were able to buy whole milk at both of our resorts - in the lobby shop. It was in 16 oz containers so we were able to keep it in the in-room refrigerators. So she had whole for her morning and evening milks. I don't think we ever found whole milk at the parks, maybe once or twice, but I checked with our pediatrician before going and he assured me that she would be fine on low fat milk once a day, just get the highest % you can find. Remember, it's only a week. Enjoy!

Hey Valley Township...I'm in Malvern! :)

OP, I can't help you but I was just being curious. My little ones are not little anymore.. DD16 and DS13. My Dr. took them off whole milk at 18 months and onto 2%, did they change back to whole milk again?? Just curious, please don't flame, I really am just curious.

Now the recommendation is to give whole milk at 12 months and then switch to 2% when they turn 2...well, at least that's what our doc and a few of our friends' docs say.

2% has 4 grams of fat vs 8 in whole and the protein is the same. 2% is most common milk I have found out in public. I think she will be fine either way. You should be able to come across whole milk quite frequently.

Depending on the rest of their diet - even after a year you can switch to 2%. DS drinks ~30 ozs/ day and is 18 mo and eats plenty of cheese and other full fat stuff. So he's on 2% and I am grateful to not have to keep 3 types of milk in the house!

And yes - those Horizon or Organic valley boxes are great in a pinch and since they are room temp you don't even have to take the chill off!

No problem! Recommendations are constantly changing. My mom told me that when I was little the doctor insisted that I was off the breast and on whole milk by 9 months!

My daughter just turned 1 in September and our pediatrician told us that she should have whole milk until she is at least 2. Interestingly enough, one of my doctor friends told us that in November the APA or some agency changed the recommendation and a lot of pediatricains have been telling parents to start kids at 2% at 1 year, because of the obesity epidemic.

Our daughter doesn't have an issue with her weight, so it just makes me feel better for her to get the extra fat for her developing brain with the whole milk. She isn't the best eater (or drinker) for that matter, so every little bit counts.

On a sidenote, I'm now 3 months pregnant and I used to be a skim milk drinker. With this pregnancy, however, I can't stand skim milk and have actually switched to drinking my daughter's milk. I guess it is just one of those weird pregancy things.

I just wanted to mention I saw a show about milk. Did you know whole milk is only 3% fat, so you are talking about a very insignificant amount of fat to switch to 2%. This convinced me to keep my two 2-year-olds on whole milk because they are healthy weights, and it has not contributed to any unusual weight gain, and there would be no need for learning to like another taste. The fat is actually good for brain development.

To answer your question, we found whole milk at the resorts, but I believe milk in the parks was 2% or 1%. My kids did not like it as much, but still drank it.

We have seen whole milk all over the place, but they really don't need it so why worry about it :confused3 It won't hurt them at all to have a few servings of 2% here or there.

BTW, my DS has NEVER been on Whole milk. We switched him right to 2% and then 1% at 2 years old. He gets plenty of milk fat from other dairy products in his diet. We also only give him 16 oz. a day of milk. Our doctor encouraged us to give that amount as too much milk isn't really good for them. In Disney he only gets milk with breakfast and dinner and we just give him whatever they have on hand (whole, skim, 2% etc). He really doesn't care and it doesn't affect him the short amount of time we are on vacation.

DS was on whole milk on our last WDW trip and we had no problems finding it in the parks, restaurants, or resorts.

I think this milk stuff can get confusing, as I'm always hearing different things.

When DD9 turned 2, the dr said to switch her from whole milk to 2%, then eventually go to 1%, with the goal of being on skim by age 5.

Two years later, DS was turning 2. The dr said I could start him on skim right away. At that point, DD was 4 and on 1%. I put them both on skim at that time.

Now my youngest is 2 and weighs 23 lbs. He's always had weight issues, so I was shocked when the dr said he could go on skim too. He had a decent weight gain (for him) between 18 mos and 24 mos, so I guess that's why the ped didn't have a problem switching him to skim.

It's nice to buy one type of milk for everyone in the house now, but I'm still a bit worried about my little guy. I guess I'll wait and see how much weight he gains between age 2 and age 2.5, then discuss with the dr if I'm still concerned.

Anyway, have a great trip. :goodvibes I'm sure you'll find whole milk in most places, and it sounds like the occasional drink of low fat milk would be ok too.
