Sorry for the rant, but I just had to get this out of my system.

DH and I went to Busch Gardens today (it's about an hour from our house). We got there early and did 9 rides on Shiekra before the heavens opened (and we got stuck 10 minutes out in the monsoon because the ride shut down and we were stuck at the top of the second hill). Okay, this is FL and it happens...thankfully our cell phones weren't ruined, and they handed out front of the line passes for next time. I was going to buy a t-shirt anyway so I bought shorts too, redressed, and we headed home (the rain looked pretty permanent).

I used Onstar to get back to I-4, and it gave me a different way than we came. Little did I know there was a cosmic reason. I was driving along on the expressway and saw A TINY KITTEN in traffic! Someone must have just thrown it out of their car, and first it started running towards the center lane, then somehow made it to the shoulder where it tried desperately to climb the ten-foot concrete wall. I was in the lane on the other side, but of course I had to stop. It took me forever to cross, but some kind people eventually saw what was up and slowed so I could get there...then some ******* behind the lady in the right lane who was letting me so swung onto the shoulder to pass her, narrowly missing the kitten despite my screaming and waving at him (DH said he wonders if it was the guy who tossed him...in the time it took me to cross he could indeed have gone around and gotten on the expressway again...probably just a jerk tho').

I managed to grab the soaked and terrified kitten and called Onstar. They had us on GPS, so they started to call the nearest vets till they found one that was open, then gave us directions. Thus far he has check out okay, other than cuts/rashes from hitting the pavement, and he also has the runs. He's going for a more comprehensive vetting to a loca doc. on Mon. Then I have to decide where to keep him or foster him for a local rescue group. Right now his diarrhea is causing me to keep him in the shower, and my three sumo cats are miffed but not overly insane about the whole matter. I named him Shiekra in honor the coaster that played an indirect role in saving his life (getting stuck and causing me to get soaked and have to stop to buy new clothes made the timing just right).

How awful. How could somebody do that? You are so kind to have stopped and rescued that poor kitten. It always makes me feel so bad when I hear a story like this.Do you think you'll end up keeping the kitten?

Bless you for rescuing the kitty.
For as long as I live I'll never forget the image of the poor cat trapped on the 440 in Nashville. Sadly there was no saving him:sad1:

:grouphug: I'm glad you were in the right place to rescue this kitten & I thank you for caring!!! :grouphug:

If my other cats take to him, we'll probably keep him even though four cats in our house is kind of pushing it spacewise. But one of the current three is...well, special. He spends 23 1/2 hours under the bed hiding and the other 1/2 an hour coming down to eat and trying to bite us if the voices in his head command him to. I guess it's more like having 2 and 1/4 cats so we could probably fit another one in.

The current normal two aren't thrilled with him, but they're not going crazy about it either. The insane cat flipped out, but that's par for the course.

In the worst case, we will contact a local no-kill adoption group and foster him until they can get him a home. I'm just worried about adoptions in this economic time...all over town, people are reporting strays dumped when people were foreclosed on and just left 'em. At least if we keep Sheikra, we'll know he's got a "forever" home.

Oh, what a heartbreaking story. So very glad you were in the right place at the right time, and the kind of wonderful person who actually did something. Give your little kitty a kissy for me, right on the top of his head!!!

side note: I once rescued a cat with a somewhat similiar history....watched her dodge traffic and try to climb a pole, a tiny little fleabitten baby. She became a valued part of our family for over 15 years, our first "baby" as a newly married couple.

I hope it works out that you get to keep him. 14 years ago my mom and dad went for a walk and my dad could hear a kitten crying. He found the kitty and took him home.My parents tried to find a new home because they already had two cats.Well they still have her. The other cats got over it.

Oh my goodness, the poor kitty! Thank goodness you were there to rescue it. :thumbsup2

How could anybody do such a horrible thing to a defenseless kitten?

bless you for saving that poor little kitten. he desperately needed an angel today, and, IMHO, you were sent there to save him. i pray that if you can't keep him, he goes to a loving home.

Thank you for saving that kitty's life. Please do foster it (although bet you can't give it up LOL). The pleasure watching these little ones turn around and become adoptable is not measurable.

The local rescue place will probably give you some Albon to give that baby, since most kittens have coccidia and within a few days, the diarrhea will stop. Please keep him away from yoru other kittens until you get him tested for feluk and FTP and of course you'll want to check him for fleas.

How young is he? Does he need KRM (kitten replacement milk)? You probably know since you have other cats, not to give him milk, as that will make the diarrhea worse.

Adoptions have been pretty good lately. We had 13 this week, which was great considering our local APF put out a special appeal last week and adopted out 57 in two days (our organization took 5 of them to help them out). I think we've adopted about 40 the month of May.

If you do keep him, the local rescue group can probably steer you towards a low cost spay/neuter program.

Thanks again for having a wonderful heart. There are probably siblings and I just hope others that might have seen them, were as kind as you.

I think the vey said he's about six weeks old. We don't have a good pet store close by so for now DH bought him Whiskas cat milk, and we are offering that along with watered-down kitten chose. If he doesn't seem to be eating enough by tomorrow, I'm going to get some replacement milk from Petsmart.

He's isolated behind glass from the others for now, with only a couple of brief closer introductions. I feel so sorry for him because he purrs when he sees them and they're llike "No way."

I feel like we're probably "doomed" to keep him...sigh! I've been tempted by other cats people have found in the neighborhood and posted on the intranet but managed to resist by saying "four is too many." But when a cat is literally thrown in front of you (and when you play dodge 'em with traffic), it kinda puts a vested interest in there.

We had a great low cost spay/neuter clinic in Chicago...here in Kissimmee I'm not so sure, but even if it's full price those little nads are getting lopped as soon as he's old enough (I'm a big backer of spay/neuter).

Here's pics:

awwww! he's a cutie! if i lived nearby, i'd take him off your hands.

Aww..he's had a rough begining by the looks of him. His poor little eyes look like he's seen so much.
Is he eating the hard food? If not you can soak it in hot water. I like to give my fosters a mix of hard and soft, but when they have diarrhea, the soft seems to make it worse. You can also try baby food..but it needs to be the strained, (I get the chicken) and you have to make sure it doesn't have onion's (which the one for the youngest babies usually doesn't). That gets even the fussiest kitty to eat. He looks like he is old enough to only need the kitten milk to fill in. The kind you have is good..just so expensive.

I wish I lived near you, I have so many supplies I could pass on.

I found this place on Petfinders..looks like they do low cost neuter. I read one place where they do cats for $10. I wonder how the heck they can do it so cheap. That's wonderful!

Thank you for sharing his picture..and for being there for him.

omg your wonderfull for picking her up and then for keeping her........ bows

Thanks for much for the info! We're actually in Osceola County, but we have an Orange County mailing address so we might be able to use them. In Chicago, they were able to do it really cheap because the vets had an arrangement with a local animal advocate group and only charged their costs. My DH was funny tho'...he'd take the different between what it would have cost to do it on our own and give it back to the group!

I might try the baby food tomorrow if he isn't eating the softened kitten chow. He's sweet but still not quite 100 percent trusting. I can't imagine what else the scum might have done to him, considering they were evil enough to throw him on an expressway. :sad2: Oh well, he hit the kitty jackpot now. :goodvibes

You're fantastic for stopping for this little guy!

I work at an animal shelter and know that while there are some horrible people out there, there are some wonderful folks like yourself who do the right thing no matter what!

We charge $70 for regular low cost, and $30 for low income, and zero if you are on any type of assistance. It includes their rabies vaccine, ear mite treatment, advantage for fleas, nail clipping (much easier when they are 'out') and testing for feluke. The local groups do over 100 s/n each week, thanks to a wonderful vet.

Remember..make sure the baby food doesn't have any onions.

The other thing I'll feed my baby's if they have diarhhea (because the baby food adds up if you have several of them) is boiled chicken, skim off the fat, make some minute rice (or use baby food dry rice (mixed with KRM) and mix with baby food..gives them some more substance and lots of vitamins) and some non fat chicken broth, put into my magic bullet and mush into babyfood. Then I put a couple days worth in containers and freeze it. Good for them, inexpensive, and easy.

There were other low cost places. I just looked for where I though you lived).

Ah bless he looks so cute, and well done for stopping and picking him up :)

Claire ;)

He is a cutie and that was very sweet of you. Some people are heartless.

Also, thank you for saving him.
