Who went to DW in the 70's - old memories?

I recently found pictures of my sister, brother and mom and dad at disney world. We drove down with a trailer and stayed at a KOA outside of disney but I have pictures of us swimming at the poly resort pool! Coming down the slide! I also remember the 360 degree movie that was in Epcot! That was cool
felt like you were flying! :thumbsup2 I also have a post card and a glass that is shaped like a totem pole from the poly.

My first trip was in summer 1976 and we stayed at Fort Wilderness. FW had a train that ran around the park at the time and I remember walking in the evening around the grounds and hearing the armidillos nails clicking on the rails. Disney was celebrating the country's bicentennial and had a patriotic theme to the parades. I think it's cool that I got to experience it when MK was the only park, and using the tickets for the rides.

I am not certain but there were two "rides" in Tomorrowland at the MK that were films and gave you the sensation that you were moving. One, "If you had Wings" was sponsored by Eastern Airlines and you sat in the car that was on a conveyor belt that entered rooms filled with different films of the world and made you feel like you were going faster than you were. The other, Panavision, was a 360 degree room in which you stood while the film played and it gave you a similar sensation. It was sponsored by Monsanto.

Epcot didn't open until 1982.

I didnt read all 6 pages of posts but Polt and Cont. were not the only resorts in the earlt 70's. There was The Golf Resort and Fort Wilderness as well.

I'm sorry I thoought it was epcot but you are right it was the panavision all I remember is standing there watching a big semi round or round screen!! being in a dump truck going down a mountain and flying!

My first trip was in 1976 for the bicentennial. I was in my 20s, but always a kid at heart. Had never seen a Chip and Dale cartoon, but fell in love with them on that trip. We stayed at La Quinta on International Drive next to the High Q. Loved the bicentennial parade and the music. Parade music was an electronic version of Animal Crackers in my Soup. Stayed from opening till closing at 1 or 2 AM on the 2 days we were there. Next trip was 1984 when my son was old enough and we've been going to one Disney park or another almost every year since then. Still love Chip and Dale, Goofy, and Pluto...notice the animal theme.

Wow, thanks for starting this thread...it sure does bring back good memories.

My only trip during the 70's happened when I was just a week over 5 years old. The trip took the place of my birthday party that year (it was 1979).

I remember bits and peices...I remember little lizards running around on the playground of our hotel (a Howard Johnson I think), I remember McDonald's having an outside play place and that NOT being the standard up in WI at the time.

At WDW itself I remember wearing a yellow sundress and holding my dad's hand with one hand and a balloon in the other, walking down Main Street and feeling like the luckiest little girl in the world. I also remember sitting in Dumbo with my mom and asking her NOT to fly so high (what kind of wimp I must have been all three of my boys begged to "go higher go higher" as soon as they were old enough to talk). I remember walking through the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse with my dad and it starting to pour down on us just as we got done. I remember visiting with Mickey Mouse and feeling shy when he pointed to my Mickey ears. I remember eating an orange popsicle and it melting all over the place but me still being happy to have it. I remember meeting the characters from Robin Hood. And I remember Winnie the Pooh (he was my favorite even then). He was way more "Pooh sized" then. I remember getting a little bouncing ball that was half orange ball/half looked like a real orange fruit. I had a Donald Duck quacking hat and a Donald Duck whistle. I also remember being so happy to just walk around and look at all of the "carved" bushes. *what I thought topiary was called at that age*. I also remember the trolley on Main Street. And my favorite memory, I remember my dad taking me on Peter Pan THREE times in a row...that was magic to a little girl who thought Peter Pan was the cutest boy in the world!! ;) Lastly, I remember getting stuffed Mickey doll with a plastic head and plastic hands/feet.

All in all some of the best memories ever!

Wow - the memories are flying back now. I was with my parents & my sister in 1976. It was so good we went back in 78 with my Grandparents.
I remember being afraid of the Haunted Mansion - my grandfather waited outside with us while my Grandmother wound up riding alone. They couldn't stop laughing about the hitchhikers but we still wouldn't go in. My Dad almost lost his sunglasses on Space Mountain. I was 8 in 1978 and sooo afraid of roller coasters and stuff. I loved 20 000 leagues, and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.
My sister is 2 years older than me. On our first trip, there was no way anyone could get me on Pirates of the Caribbean - and my sister loved it. She went with Dad while Mom & I waited outside. Then, while she was in the ride, all of her favourite characters came by - Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and Mr. Smee - I got my picture with all of them and she missed!
Remember the big buttons? I saw some on line going for $12. I still have my "print" celebrating Mickey's 50th from the fall of 1978. It is on my dresser. DH says he is going to frame it for me.
AHHH
8 more sleeps before we begin our journey (we are staying overnight near the airport) to introduce DD to the magic. "I'm too excited to sleep!"
