I know we have some New York DISers here.....so you surely know of the great holiday TV tradition there called The Yule Log. Since 1966, WPIX channel 11 has shown on Christmas morning
a filmed scene of a fireplace with the embers burning while Christmas music plays in the background. They've done this in deference to the many NYers, especially apartment dwellers, who don't have fireplaces. The fireplcace was actually the one at Gracie Mansion; it was filmed when the late John Lindsay was mayor.

This year WB11 decided to spread the tradition of the Yule Log to some of its sister stations in the Tribune group. Here in the Philly they showed it on our WB channel this morning. It was quite fascinating to watch the fire burning with the music playing....sorta like radio with a picture while you went about the house.

So did you have the Yule Log on today?

JohnMouse, you took the words right out of my mouth.. or hand!

I grew up with the Yule Log in New York, it was a tradition my parents started when we started opening our gifts at 12 midnight. Mostly because it was the only thing on! I do remember opening presents to Johnny Carson... NOT as much fun!

So good to see this, it is a warm memory from my past.

Oooo, I had forgotten about that...grew up with that yule log too...they are still doing it? Have they updated it at all? I've been away from the area quite awhile.

I never understood why someone would watch it when I was a kid.

I watched it on the WB channel 17 here in Philly. And I taped it!

This way, I have a videotape of a fireplace with Xmas music that I can play for years to come when I have company for Christmas! The Yule Log is a great idea. It really does add mood to the room.

Wouldn't be Christmas without the Yule Log. Can't remember a Christmas it wasn't on.

:D Ya know, I tried to find the Yule log on tv yesterday and couldn't !

MSG channel also had the Yule Log....What made it different this year it was broadcast in HDTV. Of course I had to check it out and it was the most crisp clear Yule Log I ever saw ;) :) :)

I have the original Yule Log on tape and we put this one on Tivo. Also, we copied our original tape for my in-laws so they have it too. We dont have a fireplace so this is our sub.

We watched it and the children thought we were very strange indeed. What do they know?
