I did. I thought it was a great movie. I knew the mine had low ceilings, but I had no idea how small until last night. Their survival is truely remarkable.

On the Pittsburgh news last night they interviewed the miners and said the movie was very realistic and were amazed at how accurate the story was portrayed.

I cried at the end too. :( I'm such a crier! :)

i watched it also. isn't it amazing how realistic they can make movies now. unfortunately i missed the first half hour. i really enjoyed the rest of it though. i wonder if miners get bad backs from those small quarters. i don't know if any of them would have survived if they were by themselves. the 9 were really depending on each other. when one wanted to quit the others encouraged him. miners are a special breed. i don't know if anyone else could have survived that.

We watched it, too - an amazing story. I remember following it in the paper and on the internet as it happened. DH and oldest DS were in Virginia at scout camp when the mine was flooded and the news spread down there, too, even in the middle of nowhere. It's so amazing that they could survive for 3 days like that without going crazy. Can you imagine? They hear the drills and hope they'll be rescued; the drills stop and they think they'll die. Special people, every single one of them.

Side question: when they showed the credits at the beginning, we all saw the name of Kevin McClatchey. Being Pittsburghers, we immediately thought of Kevin McClatchey, the owner of the Pirates, but didn't see him in the movie. Did anyone see him, or was it just an actor by the same name?

I thought it was excellent. I can't imagine the horror those poor miners and their families went through, not knowing if they'd make it or not. Those miners really hung tough and knew how to use the resources they had available to them. I watched the rescue live when it happened and felt those same emotions last night. I'm proud to be a Pennsylvanian!!

We watched it too. Being a great-granddaughter of a coal miner I had to watch it. About an hour south of us there was a mine disaster back in the early 1900's (I can't remember the exact date but I think it was around 1917). Alot of men parished and when they spoke of the "black damp" I knew exactly what they were talking about. If you ever get a chance to try and find the book and if mining interests you - check out the "The Cherry Coal Mine Disaster". My great-grandfather had worked that day at the mine and had forgotten his lunch. He went home and due to that he was alive for a long time. If he would not have gone back home to eat lunch, he would have been caught in the mine and probably would have died.

My dd is going to do her history project next year on the Cherry Mine Disaster. Here's a link if you are interested....
