I have a question regaurding an incident at EPCOT. While on vacation last week, we watched illuminations. During the show a blast from fireworks went off directly in from of us and soot blew back into my daughters eye. She was in a lot of pain and parmedics were called. They washed out the eye and looked at it right at the front gate to epcot. Then sent us on our way with a hope you feel better. They took all our info and we expected at leats a call to our Hotel the next day(POR) to check on her but nothing. The last day of our vacation was horrible because of this. My daughter was in pain and we had to bring her to first aid again to clean the eye out. It took a good 36 hrs before she could open it with out tearing up. So I just want to write a letter to tell the the story and how we feel at least a warning should be announced before hand or a sign put up to warn of possible debris. We were not standing were we should not have been, we were right in front of the store to the right as you enter World Showcase, the blast just happen to come out from the bushes that were in front of us. Can someone tell me who and were I should address a letter to??? Thanks for any help and sorry so long!

PS....other then that vacation was great NO LINES! it was great!

YUH THIS WEEKEND WAS A GREAT WEEKEND to be in WDW longest i waiting in a line was 20 mins for aerosmith ride on sunday. But we had to switch rooms 3 times @ pop and i was treated rather rudely by bill the rent a cop security guard @ the MK gates for wearing a french connectin shirt.

Maybe I'm dreaming or something, but I thought there was an annoucement prior to the show about the possibility of fireworks debris depending upon which way the wind blows. I know I have read it or heard it somewhere. I just can't remember where.

I just wanted to add that we had to take our son to First Aid at BB once because he got a bad burn, watery blisters. He ran off before we got to put the sunscreen on him. They were extra nice, but that was it. End of story.

You send a letter/email to Guest Realtions at WDW. Go on the offical WDW site and look under the site map, and you should be able to get an email address....

However... I just got done reading 2 books about Disney and they were FILLED with things that have happened to CM's /Guests and it was a real eye opener! Their were a lot of bad accidents in both Disneyland/WDW and the point of the the chapters in the books were that if it doesn't make the headlines, or if it can't save Disney money don't bother writing.
The orginal book is called "Mouse Tales A-Behind-The-Ears Look at Disneyland" and " More Mouse Tales" both by David Koening.

He tells a lot of stories that are great, but I was struck by how many accidents/deaths have happened in the parks. And how Disney has covered them in the news and handled them.

Just think of what has happened this year, the 4yo boy that died on Mission Space, the 12 yo girl a month of 2 ago that died after passing out at Typhoon Lagoon, and the death over a month ago at DCA in Cal, on California Screaming.... We have not heard a lot of what all happened in any of these cases.

I am not trying to make Disney out to be bad, or that they don't care. However they get millions of visitors each year and there are a lot more accidents that happen then the public hears about.

It would have been nice if they had checked on you all, but they out going CMs might not have told the incoming CMs... Did you leave a cell phone/hotel room number? Did they ask you for any contact info? If not they would not have had any way of getting hold of you... they used to keep a complete log in each First Aid station of contact info. But no idea if they still do.

I hope the eye is better! We have also had soot and stuff blow into our eyes at firework shows, not anywhere near as bad as you all did! And it has happened at ECPOT also.

It's pretty common to have soot blow at you during fireworks, not only at Disney but anywhere you are that close to the show. I seem to recall an announcement as well, prior to the show.

It isn't likely you'll get much response at this point, but they did call the paramedics at the time, which seems like an appropriate response.

I am not looking for trouble just want to let them know what happened. I will look on there site. I understand accidents happen. We though they would have at least checked on her as yes they did take all our contact info. Home address, phone, dates we were staying and hotel we were staying at! They had complete info on us. Like I said just want to point out the little comcern that was had for her at the time.

We did not hear any announcment reguarding flying debris. Maybe we missed it. But if they knew there was a chance for debris would that not be neglegent on their park to knowingly put their guest in harms way? I can not see Disney doing that. OH well I will keep looking for an address. I would rather a letter in snail mail then email. I feel it would be more likly to be read if it was in the mail. (I could also be dreaming thinking that way)

Thanks

I was at Illuminations tonight and no announcement is made about debris. I listened to hear because of this post.

I'm not trying to flame but I guess I just don't see how Disney could be considered negligible for the wind blowing soot. I think it was going above and beyond to call the paramedics. If this happened at the county fair, I would take my child to the e.r. if it looked to be a serious problem. The next day if it wasn't better I would take him or her to the doctor for a more thorough check-up. I don't normally reply to threads like this but I feel like people these days are so quick to place blame on others. Can't bad things just happen sometimes that are no one's fault? :confused3

We went to a large fireworks show last spring put on by our city....we stood by the river to watch the show....it was a windy night and we got a lot of cinders in our hair, on our arms, etc. A friend was near us and got a corneal abrasion from a cinder (similar to your DD's injury)....she found some city paramedics and they flushed her eye and told her to seek medical attention if the pain persisted and that was that.

I guess I wonder why you would expect anymore attention than you recieved? They addressed the problem and rendered first aid which is really all they are equipped to do...I would not expect park medics to be doing follow up calls....it could greatly increase their liability. They are trained to provide first aid, they are not opthamologists...they really are not qualified to offer any advice if they had called the next day. All they could say if you had told them she was still having eye pain would have been seek medical attention.

I haven't even seen a doctor in a long time that does follow up calls for minor illnesses/injuries. If she had recieved a similar injury on a windy day at home from some dirt or sand in the air and had taken her to your own Dr...I would be amazed if they called the next day to see how she was doing...they would have washed her eye out and sent you home and said if it doesn't get better call us back...

I am truely sorry this happened to your DD...I know how uncomfortable eye injuries can be...and I don't want to sound harsh....I guess I am just a litttle mystified about what else you would want them to do, and why you felt a follow up call was indicated.

My guess is the reason they did not contact you to check on her is for legal reasons. By doing that, it could be held against them as admitting fault.

I wouldn't consider calling the paramedics going above and beyond but I would call it appropriate. I realize they don't call and check up on people...they let you take the next step but really not calling for help would be negligible.

It is a shame today how people have to cya!! I know lawsuits are always a problem but I would like to think that most of them would be happy with I am sorry this happened to you!

I had a similar problem in MK in January. I don't recall an annoucement ( not that I would of moved), but we were standing by the Main street Bakery and I had a lot of soot in my eyes and contacts. It was miserable, so I really do understand. I did have to rinse my eyes several times, but I was surprised so far down main st to have been affected. There was quite a few people that night that also were affected.

We are at Disney now and after we checked into OKW on Sunday - that night a leak started in the laundry room - so we called maintenence...they didnt come Sunday - so we called again on Monday eve...by then there was 3 inches of water in the bucket we put under it. Needless to say they told us we had to move to a different 2BR villa (6 peoples stuff for a 6 day stay!) it took away from our evening and was just an overall inconvenience. I went to the front desk and asked what could be done (we wanted to stay another night - so we thought maybe he could help?) The manager told me that he could only try and replace the time we lost in the move - so he gave us Priority Passes(basically fast passes with out having to come back (2 for each peron) for MGM today...That was nice - I thought...
We had a great day at the park----no waiting in lines!!! So the passes he gave us were virtually worthless. I have considered returning them in an envelope with a thank you....but I dont know exactly what I am looking for...I was looking for help on getting a room for less - but that isnt going to happen.....

So my question is - how would they compensate you for your inconvenience/pain/etc? What have they done in the past

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Hope you daughter's eye feels better.

Sorry but I have to agree that this isnt Disneys fault.. anytime you go to see fireworks this is a possibility.. and it can happen anywhere. I think them calling the paramedics was appropriate to what happened.. not necessarily above and beyond, but appropriate..

Sorry that this unfortunate incident happened and hope shes doing better..

Back in 1986 when my daughter was 3 we went to Dollywood amusement park. While riding on the steam train soot blew into her eye. They washed the eye out and told us it would be irritated for a couple of days. They did take our info but that was for their accident report so they had a record of why they werecalled on the scene. It did hurt hurt her that day and the next but it got better. I think proper action was taken in my dauhter's case at least. I did not expect anything else to done.
hope your daughter is doing better now.

I totally agree. I'm a super overprotective mother bear type of mom, but accidents happen and if my kids get hurt and it was an accident, I don't feel any need to write a letter or complain about it. It's not like soot is a dangerous, hazardous object. It was just a bad coincidence that it hit your daughter in the eye. That's the downside of behing human and having eyes - things can get in them. I'm sorry that happened, but I really think you should just drop it.

Wow, you came to the wrong place. Most people here will bend over backwards to place the blame on anyone or anything but Disney. I'm not trying to be mean or anything but it's just something I've noticed in many, many posts.

Sorry about your daughter's eye. Also sorry for the shabby way you were treated. They *should've* at least checked up on her. Sometimes all you really want is a 'sincere' "we are sorry this happened to you."

I've never heard a warning before the fireworks. :confused3 Maybe there is one, but again..I've never heard it.

At least you had a great vacation...overall! :flower:

While I'm truly sorry that your kid got hurt, controlling the wind is not something that can be accomplished -- even at Disney. I'm not "white knighting" for them; in fact I could give a rat's _ _ _, but accidents do happen. To me, it would be the same as getting hit by a foul ball at a baseball game. The odds for being safe are in your favor, but that's all they are -- odds. In everything we do, and everywhere we go we take our chances (and if we survive and learn from the rough spots, we're doing pretty well)... While it certainly did spoil a portion of your trip, what matters most is that your daughter is all right...

on her just checking to see if she was okay is not in my mind admitting fault just concern. It's just the right thing to do. I think kids should always be given a little extra special treatment..Call the kid whats the big deal. Hope all is well.
