.....Dan... the SRAs.....
Thanks, Sheila. I think those must have come after I got past Dick and Jane. Dick and Jane were about '50 or '51 for me. :faint:

I remember learning to read from them and in fact purchased the set for our DD who is in Kindergarten this year at Christmas time...It brings such joy to my heart to hear her laugh at the antics of the children in the books.

And I must say the books she brings home from the teacher are....awful!!!
DandJ are illustrated so well and they don't dumb the kids down like the books the teacher gives out.

I guess I'm the only one who didn't like these books here. All I remember was how bored I was, and thought "no one really speaks like this."

The books my daughter brought home were much more interesting (and acknowledged the diversity of the students in her classroom).

My dd is now 9, but her kindergarten teacher started her on those books, and now she's at the 4th grade level for reading. I love those books and swear by them.

I have to agree frozone. I'm not a fan of Dick and Jane either. Its very "monochrome" and sort of boring.

Yup, I remember them, and "See Spot Run. Run Spot Run." I also remember the SRA cards - I learned from those.... but I was an avid reader even then, so I lapped it all up

Thanks for sharing this link even here in Canada I learned to read starting with the Dick Jane and Spot books. I went to the link and it brought back nice memory of how proud I felt when I finished each book. Did anyone read Toy Box. We also did the SRA but I must say it did not help me to read because I was not honest since we could check the answers ourself. I notice at a young age that C can be may into a, b, c, or d. I had problems learning to read and this prgram gave me an easy way out. Fortunely much later in life a nice teacher notice that I read words but had no meaning to them. After learning to deal with my learning disability I now love to read and understand what I read now. :) P.S. I am a very honest person now.
