Who plays VMK and browses the DIS with a Mac?

Well, as many people seem to be doing these days, I'm looking to purchase a Mac. Macbook, to be exact. I know there are ways to play VMK on Macs, but how does it play? Slow, fast, terrible, or great? Would you recommend installing FireFox instead of using Safari?

So many choices and I don't know what to do. So, for those of you who browse the DIS and play VMK on a Mac, your suggestions, tips, and comments are greatly appreciated.

I am NOT a Mac hater.

I just had a really bad experiance with my MacBook.

It overheated, randomely shut off, the key's got sticky, it discolored.

I could go on..

Eventually I grew tired of all these issues and got back the $1,300 dollars I spent on it and bought a VAIO, which by the way I am VERY happy with.

VMK on the MacBook stinks. It is slow, laggy, and an overall unpleasent experiance. Even with a different browser than Safari.

I'm not saying VMK is bad on all Macs, because it isn't. You have to have a really fast Mac to play VMK like you would expect, fast and efficent.

Not only did I have hardware problems with my Mac, but I also did not adapt to OSX like I thought I would. I learned that Macs are great for digital media and those kinds of things, but besides that, they can't do much.

For example, lots of programs that are used by people on a PC are not supported on a Mac or run poorly or it's an older version of the program. Also, gaming on a Mac is a joke as there is little selection as to which games you can purchase and play and the fact that unless you spend a lot of money, the performance is not going to be that great.

Please, take my advice and stick with a PC. There are PLENTY of great notebooks out there, HP and Dell's can't be beat.

Plus, Vista is just around the corner..

VMK doesn't play well on a Mac, but that's because Adobe hasn't done a good job of optimizing the Mac version of Shockwave. If you want to play VMK on an Intel Mac, you can install Windows on top of Mac OS X (via Parallels Desktop, $80) and play VMK nice and fast while you're working with other Mac programs.

I stick with Safari, but I know a lot of people who swear by Firefox. Both are good choices on a Mac.

The MacBook is a really good computer - much better than the PC alternatives out there. As they say, even the bottom of a MacBook is prettier than the top of most PC laptops out there. You can do anything with a Mac that you can do with a PC, and in the rare case that there's not a Mac version of some software you need to run, you can run it in Windows. And Mac OS X is a whole lot more stable and secure than Windows XP (there aren't any Mac viruses in the wild), and Windows Vista already looks like it's going to be a mess.

The only area where Mac still lags behind Windows is in games, but if you want games, get a Nintendo Wii.

I'm not going to get into an argument, but I would like to point out that the only reason why Macs don't have to deal with the viruses and things that PC's do, is because not as many people use Macs. I'm sure you can agree with that.

Your right on about the gaming though, can't go wrong with the DS. Can't wait for the Wii.

Actually, the reason Macs don't have to deal with viruses and spyware is because Mac OS X is a whole lot more secure than Windows. For years there have been lots of hackers who would *love* to make headlines by being the first person to write a virus or spyware that hits Mac OS X on a wide scale - and so far no one has been able to!

Electric is right... Mac is definately more stable and secure than Windows. I know that much. I went to my local CompUSA the other day, which has an Apple Store inside of it, and played around with the MacBook. It runs so much better and smoother than any Windows computer I've ever owned. The screen is great, and it's really an awesome computer.

I tend to play VMK on Firefox and use Safari for the rest of my web browsing needs. It is still slow either way, but like the esteemed ElectricLime says, that'd be Adobe's fault. The Parallels software sounds like a perfect solution, and from what I understand about the program you really can't go wrong with it, if you have $80 to spend on VMK. I don't see what is so enticing about Vista being around the corner, though, when the OS Microsoft copied to make Vista is already available on the Mac...

Let me start by saying that I use a Mac G5 at work and have a MacBook Pro at home and would never give them up. I run Parallels on the MacBook Pro and VMK runs ok. Still do my major VMK playing on a Windows box. Never really tried to play VMK on either a Mac or PC laptop.

The issue with the Intel based Macs is Universal Binary support. Unless the program you are trying to run supports this you will need to run under Rosetta which emulates the previous PowerPC environment. If you choose not to run Boot Camp or Parallels in order to run Shockwave you will need to run one of your browers under Rosetta. I use Firefox. The other issue with Parallels and Boot Camp is that you need a real copy/license to run Windows. If you have an old PC that you aren't using anymore you could use that license. Neither program comes with Windows.

ok, i'm on a mac right now running under firefox trying to get onto vmk. the pop up window comes up to log into vmk, but wont let me type in my username and password. help?

The reason you can't sign in is because you have to have adobe downloaded and then you have to open safari or firefox in rosetta emulation mode. Do a control + click on the application and press 'get info' when you look through everything you will see a checkmark box for 'open in rosetta mode'

IT DOESN'T FREEZE... ever.

I have mine for college. and i am in absolute love with it. It's not the best for VMK but it is by far the most secure and reliable.

By the way, there has been a recall if your programs have been shutting down on you MacBook. I would suggest you call Apple if you're still under warrenty.

I sent that flawed piece of hardware back to Apple.

I then went out and bought a VAIO.

I will never be buying a Mac again..

I have an iBook G4 which I LOVE for everything except playing VMK. My PC has been unplugged for the past month or so because my room is being renovated, so I have no choice. VMK is muderously slow on the iBook, and pretty much all you can do is sit and chat, and even that runs slow when there are more than four people in a room. Don't even THINK about playing any VMK games because it will get you nowhere. When it comes to playing VMK, stick with the PC my friend.
