I love Target!!! but DH will not shop there. He says it's French owned and will not shop there. He is in the military and will buy "made in USA" as much as possible... but is it really a big deal? I don't know if there is any truth to it being French owned, and don't have the same mindset I guess... He only buys Chevy... I drive a Volvo :) and love it! don't get me wrong, I don't ever want to put an American out of a job... but does it really make a big difference what you buy? He says they don't support the military and we won't shop there. I guess I see what he means as far as... the Americans have paid his wage all these years so we'll spend the $ w/Americans... I look at what I like... not where it's made or where it came from... Look, Honda isn't an American car...but the factories are here... ?? :confused3 to me that is still supporting American workers...?! What are your thoughts???

I wasn't aware that Target was owned by the French but I haven't done any reading on it. You know, people often joke and call it Tar-jayyyyy to make it sound like you're going to a fancy French boutique. Maybe he's confusing that? :confused3 Not sure.

I think that's a wonderful concept to support American products and I will do it so long as the manufacturers of American products support ME!!! Meaning they make a good, quality product. That's what I want. I need to buy a product that will hold up and not nickel-and-dime me for it's lifetime. In many areas, American products cannot deliver.

It's only French if you pronounce it "Tar-jey"

:lmao: :lmao: Target used to be under the Dayton-Hudson corp, which changed its name to Target corp a couple of years ago. The Daytons are a rich MN family whose son (Mark Dayton) was elected through some odd liining up of the stars or something to be a MN Senator. He is the only one who left his office during some bomb threat or antrax scare awhile back, maybe you have heard of him. At any rate, they changed the name very soon after he was elected to office. They are not French, just good ol' Minnesotans.

Target is a US based company, started in the US (in Minnesota) and not French owned.

You can show your hubbie the following links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Corporation

As far as buying US goods.. well I drive a Toyota, so you can see where I stand. :rotfl:

:woohoo: !!! That is awesome... I love Target... It is nice, clean, organized.... I like that. Plus they have good deals ;) .. but I don't want to offend him. He does so much to defend our country... I don't want something so petty to cause an issue! Thanks for the links I will show him. I like Wal Mart too... but I just have always liked Target better ... Thanks guys!

Yeah, my ex had 2 Toyotas! Those things will fall apart before they stop running. His one truck has over 300k miles on it!!! My Volvo has over 200k miles on it. It's a 99 and still looks new. Its hard to get that many miles out of an American made car...

I am suprised that most of what I bought last trip to WalMart was made in America:

The three pack of thick, tubular hangers (which are sadly almost never in stock) are made in America. So are those handy Rubbermaid Bins (the white ones with holes on the side and the greyish handles.) Also the bath mat I just bought was made in America too.

Go figure!

Now I wonder if the Ziplock containers are?

So it's ok to support China and their poor labor practices through Wal-mart but not the French?! :confused3 I understand not wanting to upset your husband but I don't get it....then again I'm sleeping with the "enemy" every night.

If your Volvo is a 1998 or younger, you are driving a car made by FORD.

If before 1998 (1997 and older), than you are driving a European vehicle. :goodvibes

Did you know that 75% of Toyotas that are sold here are manufactured here? 80% of GM's cars sold here are manufactured here. Not much of a difference.

I shop at Target and I buy the better made product at a better price, which is usually foreign.

I'm not emphatic about it, but I try to buy American made goods, or even better, locally made goods as much as possible. But my concern is where the products are made, not where the company's headquarters is.

I'd much rather drive an American made Honda, than a foreign built Dodge.

I live in Minnesota and my dh works for Target. We have been told that Minnesota is still in the USA.

I feel insulted

That whole Target owned by the French rumor was spread by a massive chain email a few years back. It really frustrates me that so many people still believe that nonsense.

I think Target is a nice store too. And I think that buying Made in the USA is great too however I don't check tags or anything before I buy something.

:grouphug: Sorry :) no insults intended!

diz_prncez... I agree, its great to buy that way but I don't check either. I was buying DH "under armour"... great product!! then he tells me "its made XXX, don't buy it anymore" :confused3 OK..whatever. but I'm still going to buy it for myself!

my husband also works for target, and i have to say that if your hubby wants to boycott any chain store let it be wal-mart... most of their entry level employees are considered impoverished, they're pay is so low and their benefits are so bad that many of them are on welfare! so that means that any amount of money you save there you are spending in taxes. target has terrific benefits and very fair wages.

I got this off of Snopes.com...
The Target Corporation is a publicly held, U.S.-based firm which has been headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, since it began as the Dayton Dry Goods Company in 1902. Target is not now, nor has it ever been, foreign-owned. (A French-based financial institution, AXA, holds about 42 million shares of Target stock, but that holding constitutes less than 5% of Target Corporation's outstanding shares.)

Also, I don't really pay attention to whether the items I buy are made in the USA or not. I also drive a foreign car. My opinion is that even though the item might not be manufactured in the US, there are a lot of US jobs involved in the import and sales of these items. JMHO

I love Target and I still don't get the uproar over France. Everyone who doesn't agree with America isn't automatically bad :confused3:
