Just curious....
I might be visiting a friend there soon and curious who all lives there in that area? (and what advice you give me for things that are "must see" while there) I've never been there before- and who knows when I'll visit again, if ever.
(keep in mind this will be a shock for me- I'm a Texan girl and have always lived in the rural small towns of Texas)

Times Square

Satatue of Liberty

If you can, try to see the Lion King

5th Avenue Disney Store(not sure when it's scheduled to reopen)

Central Park

Carriage ride around Central ParK

SHOPPING, SHOPPING, SHOPPING :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Thanks for all the info- and I'm definitely going to click that link. Thanks!

If you can, try to see the Lion King

Oh yeah- planned on either that or Beauty and the Beast- ofcourse! :) :) :)

Born-n-bred Manhattanite here!

In addition to what's already mentioned...
Definitely see Times Square lit up at night
Try a Broadway show- plenty of discounts available, so if you're interested I'll post some links
Greenwich Village
So-Ho
Fifth Avenue, especially from 42nd-60th Streets
Metropolitan Museum of Art (the best art museum in the world, IMO)- be sure to go to the rooftop terrace, as they have gorgeous views of the city and the park
Museum of Modern Art
The Financial District/Downtown Manhattan on a weekday, when it's bustling
Chinatown and Little Italy
South Street Seaport
Ride the subway at least once
The Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History is absolutely wonderful, even just to look at from outside.

Are you going with kids, or just on your own? If you'd like, I'll mention some additional places for kids.

Depending on the time of year you visit, there may be other things specifically interesting for that month/season.

Hope this helps!

Just one more thing...
IMO, Lion King on Broadway is at least 10x better than Beauty and the Beast. BATB is my favorite Disney animated movie, but the Broadway show was not all that amazing. If you saw the BATB live show at the Studios in WDW, the Broadway version doesn't have much more. If you can't see the Lion King, I'd go to another show before BATB.

I live here in NYC, down in the West Village.....Greenwich Village on the west side of the island.....and will be glad to assist with any trip planning questions you may have.

I agree with all of what the above posters said and agree that Lion King is better than BATB, but I must admit I like that one too. You may even be able to see BATB at a discount. Try www.HitShowClub.com or www.SeasonofSavings.com for more information on discounts.

You may find that staying in the Tims Square area is easy and convenient, but don't be afraid to venture out into other parts of town. Greenwich Village, the Upper West Side and other neighborhoods are a little less intimidating than mid-town.

If you have any questions or need advice, directions, brochures or anything else please do not hestiate to ask.

Just want to say how much I love New York. Visited for the first time 3yrs ago. I was a little leary when I traveled to my aunts house. She lives in Austoria .( I hope that is the correct spelling) But a day into our stay I didn't want to go home. I loved it. I am hoping to go back. Very exciting place. You always have something to see and do.

Thanks for all the info!
Yes, I've seen BATB at MGM- so maybe I should go for Lion King instead... Thanks for that tidbit of info. :)

Thanks again for SO much information! I really appreciate it.

I'll be PMing ya soon- with any questions or to pick your brain more! LOL :)

I love the Metropolitan Museum of Art -- we usually walk across Central Park to the Natural History Museum. We like to stop at the John Lennon memorial -- Imagine.

Have fun -- I love New York.

Be on the lookout for celebs, I usually see at least one when I'm paying attention. Head down, baseball hat, sunglasses, avoids eye contact, will cross street to avoid passing you. Central Park West is a good place to look.

If you have kids there is a cool candy store called Dylan's Candy Bar up by the Museums.

We love Dylans Candy shop, they have good ice cream too. Another place to try is Serendipity, its on the upper east side, in the 60's. It gets extremely crowded. But to us its worth the wait. They have frozen hot chocolate. Yummy. There's soooo much to see and do.

Thanks again for all the tips! I love it! :)

I won't be taking the kids... not the first time there, without DH and also because of the cost of flying/etc. It will just be me and friends I meet there- hopefully some from this board. That would be so cool. :)

Also heading to Midtown in Oct. Girls trip... just me & DD16. We have tix to Chicago and Wicked.

What is there to see/do in Greenwich Village and/or SoHo? Have to admit not crazy about Chinatown... once you've seen one you've seen them all. Is it safe for 2 women to take the subway? That kind of makes me nervous.

Try Mars2112 restaurant on Broadway and 50something.

To get to the eating part of the restaurant, you have to ride in a space simulator, which is really cool like Star Tours, and then it opens to a reddish, rocky, cavernous Mars-like restaurant, complete with Martians roaming around! I love that place!

That sounds neat.. kinda like Rainforest Cafe but different ofcourse. LOL

Congratulations on the tickets to see Wicked. It is one of the hardest shows to get right now and it is almost completely sold out until mid December. I am seeing it again myself on 10/19. you are going to LOVE it!!!

As for Greenwich Village/Soho--if you like to shop and eat it is a wonderful part of town to visit. The Village has a different feel in each of the sections. The West Village is full of great little restaurants and boutique type shops. Greenwich Village itself is mostly bars, restuarants and funky little clubs. The East Village is even funkier and has lots of ethnic type restaurants. Soho is once again great for shopping and dining.

One of my favorite walks is straight down Bleeker Street which takes you through the West Village, down through the Village proper and into Soho. At one point just past 6th Ave you come to a corner that has an place to eat and get great capucchino on each corner. We call it, and this is a no brainer here....capucchino corner! It makes for a nice break during your walk.

The subway is safer than ever and I ride it several times each day. Do not be afraid to ask for directions if you need them. I can even provide detailed how to get from place to place directions is you like. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have. The only silly question is the one you don't ask.

Have a great trip!

Linda

Just an FYI, NYC's Chinatown is the biggest in the world. But if you've walked through another good one (e.g. San Francisco, London, Toronto), there's probably not much need to visit the one in NYC. But Little Italy is pretty much nestled inside Chinatown.

It's definitely safe for two women to ride the subway. I've taken the subway by myself for many years now. Just keep your eyes open, as I'm sure you will. I'd also ride it during the day rather than at night, if it's your first time.

Your 16-year-old DD would love the Village and SoHo. Just great neighborhoods to walk through, great little shops, some nice big stores, and even some really nice architecture.

Oh, and you'll love the Broadway shows! I actually preferred Chicago to Wicked, but they're both great.

For anyone who visits Dylan's or Serendipity, don't forget, Bloomingdales is right around the corner!

If anyone has a good amount of time for Central Park, why not try a picnic there? Go to one of the many great gourmet food shops, pick up some nice bread, cheese, salad, fruit, etc., and carry it over.

Other suggestions for Pugdog007's DD:
Go to at least one H&M store. CHeck out www.hm.com for locations. Trendy clothes at nice prices.
Definitely go to the Museum of Modern Art. I've always loved that place, but I particularly liked it as a teen.
I think she'd definitely like Dylan's Candy Bar (60th Street and 3rd Avenue), plus go into the main floor of Bloomingdales (a full square block, from 59th to 60th Streets, from 3rd avenue to Lexington).
Fifth Avenue, from 60th to 42nd or so. When you hear people talking about the famous Fifth Avenue, this is it. The window shopping alone is great, with all the big designers located there, plus Rockefeller Center (worth taking a peek at it, even if you're not skating).
