Who knew?

Do you get motion sickness? If yes, from what?

So, here I am on my first cruise, and knowing me, I know (well, knew, at least) for a fact that I don't get motion sickness, so I thought nothing of it, especially since I've been on many airplane flights (one that was a one way flight to Germany which was at least 12 hours), roller coasters, and boats. After the ship starts to move, I felt fine...until 2-3 hours later that is. I didn't feel so good and I went back and the next morning, I thought if I had some food, it will settle my stomach. Well, that didn't turn out well because I went back to the room and I got sea sick for a good 1-2 hours (I felt fine after putting on Sea Bands which work wonders!). But it really baffled me because I never got motion sickness...EVER! Does/did this happen to anyone else?

Totally. Just because you may or may not have motion sickness on one form of transportation, is only suggestive as to whether you will have sea sickness. Not a given.

I'll also point out the first night is usually the roughest, and catches a lot of people unaware. That's because the ship is crossing the current running down the coast. Once it gets on the "other side" it's typically less rough.

This is why I've never gone on a cruise. My husband has been trying to talk me into one for years but I'm afraid of being sick the entire time!! We watched the Disney Wonder leave the port in Vancouver when we were there a few weeks ago and now we've got the itch but my motion sickness is still keeping me from committing.

This was the opposite for me. My dad tried to get me into cruising, and, at the time, I was like "I know that I won't get sick (haha, that was a lie), I just don't see what you can do for fun on a ship (I really like cruising now, though)." You can always try Sea Bands (which work for me), Dramamine, or those patches that go behind the ear or the drops that you put behind the ears.

Thanks for the tips! Dramamine and Bonine both work well for me on the plane, on rides or in the car so it may work on a ship, too. I guess I'll never know until I try!

I get sea sick sometimes but not all the time. I use Sea-bands as Dramamine makes things worse for me. Sea-bands use pressure points and you wear them before you get on the boat until you leave. I usually am okay taking mine off for brief periods. I typically get sick on the beginning and end of cruises but wih Sea-bands I'be never been so ill that I couldn't enjoy the cruise.

You're welcome! I don't know if it's required for the patches or drops, but for the Sea Bands it says to put them on a few days (3 days, I believe) before departing. That's what I'm doing on our next cruise.

Wow 3 days is a lot. I put mine one right before bording and they have always worked. 3 days seems like a lot of time before hand.

Sea Bands work great for me, too. I took Dramamine before using the Sea Bands, but, like you said, it made things worse. I believe that you have to have a full stomach or something like that for it to work? That's what my one friend told me.

Maybe I read the directions wrong, but I think it said something about to have better results? But my dad said that it would probably be best to wear them several days beforehand considering how sick I got.

I just have a bad reaction to most similar stuff no matter what. I.E. Pepto actually makes me sick instead of helping my stomach. Dramamine not matter when I take it makes me so tired and even more nausious.

I can only report that my husband (who's quite prone to motion sickness), did use the patch for our first couple of cruises. It seems that his inner ear has adjusted to cruising and he doesn't need it any longer. But, he has used the seabands on occasion since he stopped using the patch (on the really rough days). He just puts them on when he starts feeling not so good, and he generally feels better within 20-30 minutes.

Awe, I'm sorry :( One time I took Tums (and this was at home) and it did the total opposite for me.

I get motion sick in cars (unless I'm driving) and on cruises. Cars aren't bad bless I'm looking down working on stuff (reading, writing, using smart phone) or just looking out the side window watching stuff at close distance.

Cruises? Nuh uh. I just take the meds at night, starting the night before the cruise and through the entirety of it. I am just fine :)
I have to do the same on sleeper trains.

My wife gets horribly motion sick in cars and planes. She gets the patches from her doctor and puts them on the night before a plane ride or a cruise and has never gotten sea sick since she started using them. They are amazing and since she gets so motion sick thy beat taking pills that she would have to constantly be taking.

That's what the patches were behind people's ears were for - my husband and I thought there was something sci-fi going on :rotfl2:

Seriously though - I took sea bands and two different types of medications with us and we all had to try something but were ok after the 2nd day at sea

Hope you get over it and have a wonderful cruise

I don't get motion sickness in any form (thank goodness because I love cruises, roller coasters and long road trips) but my husband and son sometimes feel a bit off kilter so I bring them Bonine.
They take them right before bed and have done very well with that method so far. Sometimes, they will actually not take them and also do okay.

I like the idea of sea bands though just in case the water gets rough and we need quick relief (which Bonine does not offer)

The funny thing is, I don't get sea sick at all, but I do get land sick when we get back. (except for this last time.) I actually carry Bonine to take the last day of the cruise and for two days after. For some reason the land lurching every time I move afterwards makes me queasy.

Actually you cross the gulf stream which runs like a river heading north as you are heading south. Does make it a little interesting that first night!
