Who Knew We Were Virginians?

Guess what day it is!!!! GUESS what DAY it IS!!!!!!!!

Nope, it's not hump day!

It's Claire's 9th birthday! I can't believe we have hit the last year of single digits for her. Cousin Alexis is also 9, turning 10 in January, but of course, like every other year, she reminded Claire that even though they are both 9 right now, Alexis is STILL older than her. :rotfl: They have a love/hate relationship at times. Lots of competition on important things like age. :rotfl2:

We had her family b-day party on Sunday. Claire sadly was not feeling well though. She went to an overnight party for another friends b-day on Friday night and when I picked her up Sat. morning she was pale and coughing and a runny nose. I started pumping over the counter meds in her right away and though she was OK, she was not her normal self. But she still enjoyed her party and got lots of nice gifts.
My Aunt Mary made a song for her b-day too, which was a highlight. (Aunt Mary went on the cruise with us last year). Aunt Mary started making songs last year, with my sister Gail's 40th b-day last Dec. Then Alexis got a turning 9 song to the tune of Justin Biebers song Baby and Abby got a turning 4 song in Sept to the tune of Under the Sea. So now it was Claire's turn. One directions "She don't know she's beautiful" is the tune of hers and it was a big hit.

This is the song, if you would like to take a listen.

To explain the song. "Paige has a privet drawer" When Paige was little she had a drawer she labeled Privet, but she meant private and we have always made fun of that over the years as she got older. The part about Claire making her own vocabulary and we learn what a Kay da Kay would be...Claire called Frisbees that. We have no clue why, but we again always laughed about that. And the part about other kids bringing boring pets to be blessed and Claire brings a calf...is because each year her school has pet blessing day and Skip always brings a calf to be blessed instead of a cat or dog like most others do.

So the party was fun and we enjoyed the day, but by the end of it I could tell she was not feeling well at all. As soon as the medicine wears off she is not so good, so I told her she could sleep in yesterday and we would go from there. She woke and said she would stay home and I noticed she seemed to have trouble talking so I asked if her throat hurt too and yes it did. So I called the Dr. She has 2 kids in her class getting over strep throat. We had an afternoon appointment and sure enough she has strep and a cold along with it. So she is home today as well and still sleeping. I have to say she was not disappointed at all about missing school though.
:lmao:

Love the song! How special for her Aunt to do that for her. Funny about the kid language. :)
Sorry to hear that she was sick for her special day, hope she is feeling better soon.

Happy Birthday Claire! Poor thing! It stinks to be sick on your birthday. I had strep on my 22nd birthday, the doctor at my college told me it would be cruel for him to wish me a happy birthday lol. Hope she feels better soon! At least she is sleeping well.

party: :bday: party: Claire

Sorry she is sick. :sad1:

What a great tradition with the Aunt Mary Songs. :upsidedow

Sorry to hear Claire has strep throat. That disease can really wear you down, poor little girl.

Happy birthday to Claireparty: Sorry to hear she is sick. River and I are finally over our sickness he had to miss school too and I'm sure he was just as happy about that as Claire was.

River turned 10 this year:sad1: He was happy and I was depressed he's not my baby anymore:laughing:

Aunt Mary did a great job on the song:thumbsup2

Happy birthday Claire! I hope that you feel better soon!

Aunt Mary sounds like she would fit in perfectly with our family. Such a crazy funny woman!

I totally forgot to comment on your last couple of updates. Jen, you really do attract the Know It All folks, don't cha? :lmao: At least the guy didn't disrupt the tour too badly and you were able to still enjoy it.

As always, your pictures are great and I really enjoyed looking at them all. As you probably know, Louisiana has many many plantations (some of which are haunted). I've toured quite a few and your pictures make me want to go on a road trip to see some more. Just a little tidbit, there's a "castle" just about a mile or so from my office that has a tunnel that runs underground that most people don't know about. It goes from the house to the river and all sorts of stories are told about what the tunnel was used for.

Thanks. Aunt Mary is so clever!
Claire has had some funny words over the years. no clue where she comes up with them.
She's feeling a bit better, though I think she would've been happy if I kept her home from school another day.

It does, but she was already on the mend at least. We did go out to dinner last night and she was doing well and ate a big steak! She's back to school and one of her friends was so happy to see her back.

party: :bday: party: Claire

Sorry she is sick. :sad1:

Aunt Mary is very clever. She has written real songs over the years and some were even bought, but nothing thats been a big hit. I think her and Geoff did have a hit in another country though. :thumbsup2

How did our babies grow up so fast! I asked if I could wrap her up in a blanket like a burrito and carry her around yesterday and she gave me a dirty look and told me no. I told her I just wanted to relive her being a baby. She also said no to me shaving her head and putting a baby hat on. :confused3

What a cute song!

Happy birthday, Claire!

.... and get better soon.

Thanks. Even though she was feeling a little down she did have a good birthday.

Happy birthday Claire! I hope that you feel better soon!

She is back to school today and she seemed to be doing well, except for the cold part. but that will take a while to get through her system.

Aunt Mary has always been so much fun. She is really a perfect Aunt.

I bet it would be fun to see all those plantations. And haunted makes it more fun! I wish we had some stuff like that closer to me. Well we do have a mansion at the metro park that is pretty cool, but I guess I am used to that and it's not like visiting these plantations.

Heck yes! Even my sister is a know it all! :rotfl:

We then started to head back towards the house so we wouldn’t be late for the tour.

We moved over on a path the led up to the backside of the house.

Again, I had that “Can you imagine being a kid and growing up with this yard” thought.

I believe Dad is already over at the meeting spot and I am still behind taking pictures.

A look back towards the river.

Here is a cannon ball still lodged in the side of one of the flanking buildings.

The cellar.

Side entrance.

Another puke colored flanking building.

These just looked disgusting to me. I am not sure if that is mold on the side of the house, but it sure looked like it to me. I guess they were keeping the place looking original?

I have to say I tried to look in the windows from the where I was without being too obvious. I couldn’t figure out what this is used for now. It really looked like a junky apartment. They had broken blinds in the windows, fans in the windows and AC units. And I could see an old looking TV set through one window. It really looked like some low life lived there. I could be totally wrong and maybe it was used for storage, but I was not impressed with what I saw and I really think in either case they should have the blinds closed ….and perhaps replace the blinds.

That house with the cannonball still lodged in the wall is pretty cool... I think that type of stuff is pretty cool. I like to visit those old forts and such and seeing how they were able to withstand the battles that ensued...

Happy Belated Birthday to Claire... Our oldest sons birthday is a little more than a week and a half away... Hecktic time of year for us as well...

I really have not found the perfect travel partner yet....one who can get up early and stay up late and like all the things I do.
LOL

Just let me know! I tend to wake up early (before 7) even on vacay, and can usually last most of the day and evening, as long as i have a couple sit down and snack breaks! Plus, I'm only an hour away! :thumbsup2

I'm loving these pics, especially the cannonball! that is so cool!

I Love that kind of stuff too. It's so neat to know the history.

Yes Dec. B-days are hectic. My dad is the 26th and my sister the 27th too!

LOL. Sounds like the perfect traveling mate for me!!!!

It was now getting closer to the time for our tour, so I clicked a few more pictures as I made my way to the meeting place.

I was back around the front of the house now.

A look out to the front driveway.

I had a seat and saw this lizard on the side of the house so I tried to get his picture.

And one more picture from where I was sitting before I put the camera away.

Our tour guide came and met us. She told us she was new and this was her first tour on her own. She was very nice and very good for her first time alone. I am sure we missed out on some info, but she still did a good job.

We got a little history outside and were told about the cannon ball in the side of the building and then led to the basement where we watched a movie. Honestly, I no longer remember what the movie was about, but I am sure it gave history of the area and house.

After that we were led back outside and in the house. Our group was much bigger than what we had at Shirley. I am sure this had to do with the time of day. Again, no pictures during the tour were allowed and again we only toured the first floor as the upper floors were being lived in. These people were not the original family. They had bought the house, restored it and opened it for tours. This house was not kept up over the years like Shirley had been either. At one time is was close to ruins and I think it had even been used as a barn for a while.

Berkley is the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Also this is the birthplace of William Henry Harrison, the 9th president. The house was occupied by Union troops during the Civil War and the song “taps” was composed here.

It was another very interesting tour and we were told things that had been added on and when and things that were found during restorations, for example doorways and windows that had been covered at some point in time were discovered.

After the tour we were getting hungry. We knew there wasn’t much of anything in the area, so we decided to head back towards civilization. We headed back to the car.

And one quick look back at the house.

We headed off and I decided I wanted to take a quick look at Westover since it just veered off on the driveway. Dad said he would sit in the car, which was fine. It was actually kind of windy and chilly today, with some warm periods when the sun came out to shine, but near the river it did seem colder.

We made the turn to Westover and wow that was a long driveway back. As we got back there, there were actually several little houses all around the place. I am not sure if they had been there as part of the plantation years ago, or as things got sold off they just built these houses, but it was kind of strange. Some seemed to be awkwardly placed, so that makes me think that they might have been part of the estate at one point in time.

We parked in a little parking area and I got out, put some money in the drop box and started at the back of the house. They were right along the river as well.

This is the back side of the house. This house itself was the most beautiful. I enjoyed Shirley best for the all-round experience, but if I had a chance to tour inside of this house, I may have picked this one as winner as this is my kind of house in looks!!!

I kind of felt weird walking along the house. This was someone’s private residence. But they did allow people to tour the grounds, so they must be Ok with it.

A small map was also given at the drop box and I had taken one. It showed that they did have underground tunnels from this end of the property to the other side of the house.

All caught up again. Disney, life and the holidays keep getting in my way.

My kids always loved Jamestown when they were younger. I'm hoping to take the grandkids there in a year or 2.

The plantations were very nice. My niece got married this past September at one of the old plantations in Richmond. The grounds were gorgeous but I never went in the house. The tour person was a little rude and it turned me off.

Happy Birthday to Clair. My oldest granddaughter was 9 in August. Where does the time go?

Tell me about it. I seem to be busy all the time lately. Tonight is the school Christmas program, which means I need to shower and do my hair before I pick Claire up from school so I won't be rushing later. :rotfl:

I always thought it would be neat to get married at a plantation. Of course I never found that rich man to take me to one to do that. LOL

I can't believe my baby is 9 already.

Happy Belated Birthday to Claire.
Great updates and pics.
All caught up again.

Thanks and Thanks!!!

Great updates! Happy Belated Birthday to Claire!:cutie:
