Who knew that carpet was so expensive

Carpet is extremely expensive. My DH is an installor and some of the jobs he does, people spend well over 10,000.00 :scared1: .It is just crazy on what it cost for floor covering.
The good thing about him being an installor is he gets flooring ver, very cheap. We have put new very expensive carpet in our bedroom(Frizae?)and hardwood in the living room, kitchen, dining room and laundry room for 1700.00.

Just make sure you have a good installor, because berber will show seams very easy, well some berber does and some dont.Just like others have said, dont go cheap on the pad.We have 8lb in our bedroom.

Just a suggestion. I sold a condo not too long ago; the seller had painted his concrete floors. It looked really nice.

We just got high end Shaw laminate installed in our house (the great room area and hallway). It was about $7.21 per square foot installed. We want to replace the carpet in our bedroom. We went to an independent guy, Mohawk california berber with updgraded padding would be $27 square yard installed. You should look around a bit more.

I agree on the padding and the little green machine! Get the best padding possible and use that green machine for spots! I also think you get what you pay for in terms of carpet.

We went with the 8lb pad and the room is just under 12 feet wide and about 18.5 feet long. I nice rectangle that won't require any seams.

We recarpeted our house last year when we moved in...the entire upstairs and downstairs living room:

Now...we picked very, very good carpet and very good padding because I believe that when it comes to carpet..you get what you pay for...we paid $6500 installed....I don't think they go on sf, cause there is waste and such...

if you can't afford good carpet...get the best padding...my carpet subcontractor has always said this and I find it true...the best padding will keep your carpet from getting too worn..and vacuum like crazy!!

This is why I put hardwood through the entire house. I like "good" carpet. The price between the good carpet and hardwood floors (whole house) wasn't such a huge difference.

Also, sometimes when you do just one room, you get hit with a higher charge than doing a whole level of the house.

Another thing--if the carpet comes in a 12-foot wide role versus 15-foot that can make a difference too.

when we had new carpet installed a year ago it took 2 days for installation and at one point we had new carpet half way up the hall and some old running down the remainder. my son would stand with one foot on the old and one foot on the new, rock back and forth and say "cushy carpet, flat carpet, soft carpet, hard carpet" :rotfl: the difference in the higher grade of pad was very evident :teeth:

the thing with the painted concrete floors seems to be getting more popular, but i can't imagine what that must do with noise :confused3 i would think the room would sound like an echo chamber!

I wish we had gotten the downstairs in wood...I was afraid of the sand factor....Florida has so much sand that woodfloors don't do well here...we are actually thinking of doing it next year all downstairs...

Also..the house was empty, so we weren't charged for moving or anything and it seems like we had a 15 roll...i know I ended up with alot of extra carpet that I put in the front half of the garage where the tool box and storage is..

Well, heck!! I'm trying to think of what I can add to all the info above. :teeth:

What was said about padding is right on the money. A high quality carpet will not last long with a low quality pad. At the least a 6 lb pad for plush or a 7.5 or 8 lb berber pad for berber. Berber padding is denser and made to go under berber carpet.

Carpet width can also add to the cost. Most berbers come in 12' and 15' while most cut piles come in 12' only. More manufacturers are making cut piles in 15' width because newer homes have wider rooms. If you have to have a seam, that's going to mean ordering more carpet than you'll actually need and will increase the cost.

Like I said, nylon is more expensive than polyester and olefin, but it's worth it. Nylon is strong, has great memory and wears very well, and dyes well allowing a wide range of colors. A branded nylon -- Stainmaster, Solutia Wear Dated II, etc. -- will also cost more than an unbranded nylon. Plus, nylon is a petroleum byproduct, and oil costs have driven up the cost of carpeting in the last year.

A nylon pattern berber? Depending on the grade and if it's a branded nylon, $5 a square foot doesn't sound too far out of line if that includes installation with a high-quality pad.
