I'm very curious as to how common this is. In our district, elementary school is K-4. The 5th graders go to a different school and everything is done differently. They have 4 different teachers for the core classes - one for math, one for language arts, one for science, one for social studies, and then they have teachers for the special classes like art, music, PE, etc.

I'm just wondering if there are certain parts of the country where this is common, or is this fairly unusual?

It's the same way here. Children go to one school for 5 & 6th grade & then another school for 7th & 8th. :)

our schools are mostly k-6/7-9/10-12. had a neighbor move to an area of arizona where elementary was deemed as k-3, the 4th-6th went to "upper elementary".

My elementary school ran K-5. The 5th graders though had all different teachers. They have "homeroom" teachers which would also teach them science and social studies. Then they would change to a different teacher for english (depending on your level) and again a differnet teacher for math (also depending on your level). They also have different teachers for art, music, gym. It was nice because it allowed the different level students to learn on their level. For example I was always an honor student so it was nice to be able to have an honors english and math class that I could learn the more advanced stuff. And also it allows the students to get out of that 1 classroom and prepare for the change of classes like in middle school. Well without the midterms and finals.

Wow, not sure I really like that.
Our elementary school goes up to and includes 6th grade. Middle school used to be 7-9th but now it's 7th and 8th only. High school is 9th-12th.

Schools are k-5 here, then 6-8, then 9-12.

We're in a small town, used to be quite rural, but is now moving more towards suburban.

There are 3 schools in town:

Elementary is PreK-3rd Grade

Middle School is 4th-8th (however, the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders are on one side, and the 7th and 8th on the other side of the school, and rarely the twain shall meet)

High School is 9-12th

Were from a VERY small town.

Our school is K-8th grade!!! Only 176 students total.

However, elementary is K-4 and middle school is 5-8 and is located on a different level but in the same school.

High school is 9-12.

Our current district is lower elementary: pre-k thru 4; upper elementary: 5 & 6; junior high: 7 & 8; HS: 9 - 12. We'll be moving in March and our new district will be pre-k thru 5; 6 - 8 and then HS.

I've taught in 3 districts all by each other and all three were different. The one I am in now has Elementary K-4, Intermediate 5-6, Junior high 7-8 and High School 9-12.
One district had sixth grade in elementary and the other one has middle school which was 6,7, and 8.
The main one I had a problem with were the sixth graders were way too big to be in elementary school and not switching classes at all! There was no preparation to get them ready for Junior High...

our town has primary school K - 4
intermediate school 5 - 8
high school 9 - 12

I grew up in the same town and like the old system better when it was K - 6, 7 - 8 and 9 - 12

My niece and nephew's middle school is like that. It is 5th-8th in a building attached to the high school.

Our town though is K-3 in one building, 4-5 in another, 6-8 in the middle school and 9-12 in the high school.

DD goes to private and middle is 5-8 but it is almost like two separate schools 5-6 and 7-8
Public schools here are middle is 6-8

My DD is in 5th grade this year. She goes to elementary school (PreK-5) but all the 5th graders are in a seperate building. They switch classes 3 times a day--for math, language arts and specials and stay in their "homeroom" for everything else. Its to get them used to moving classes with different teachers next year.

My son's elementary school is K-5. He's in 5 now. There are 4 5th grade homerooms -everyone has their homeroom teacher for Language Arts. Math is leveled and two of the teachers each teach two math classes. One teacher has everyone for Social Studies - he is awesome. And another teacher has everyone for Science. It helps them get ready for middle school.

Our middle school is 6-8 and is fed by 3 elementary schools.
The largest feeder school currently has K in one building 2 blocks from the 1-5 elementary school. Next year the new "primary" school will open for K-2, with 3-5 remaining at the elementary school.

Ours are K-2/3-5/6-7/8-12. That's way-ay-ay too much administration, IMO.

we used to be k-8th, then it was k-6 and 7-8, then it was k-5 and 6-8th, then k-3, 4-5, 6-8th, now it's k-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8th. Gotta love overcrowding resulting from over development! The hs has always been 9-12, the only difference was we used to be in a regional hs and opened our own around 1984.

Elementary school.....K-3
Middle School...........4-8
HS..........................9-12

We have a PreK center
Primary K-2
Elem 3-5
Middle 6-8
High 9-12

In a few years we will have a 9th grade academy to help the transition from Middle to High.

I am sure in a few more years we probably will have a 6th grade center as well.

I know the county lext to us for YEARS has changed the format many times to see what works best.

Ours is...

K-5/6-7/8-0/10-12

We have 17 Elementary schools, 1 middle school, 1 Jr high, and 1 high, but they are building a 2nd high school here.
