Who is a “travel party”?

I suppose this never really mattered before but now with covid, and chances of positive cases at the port…. So what exactly is your “travel party”? I’ll be going on a cruise with my parents and in-laws. 9 of us altogether in 3 “households” who all booked at the same time (one person did the booking and will be paying for everyone), 3 separate rooms (which I will link in reservations eventually). Are all 9 of us the party? Or each room a party? If my father, say, tests positive at port, will all 9 of us be covered under insurance to not travel? Will all of us be quarantined? Or just the two in his stateroom (he and my mother)? Any insight on this? Thank you!

I've always felt it was whoever you'd be socially active with or having close contact with prior to and during the cruise. So...all 9 of you are a travel party.

I haven't read any first-hand reports and suggest you contact DCL and your insurance to ask. Your question seems to be 2-part:
1) Would DCL consider you all 1 party and therefore cancel/refund everyone even if the positive test result is in a different stateroom? Or would DCL only cancel/refund the 1 stateroom with the positive test? That may depend on whether you've been in contact prior to arriving at the port; DCL should be able to let you know how they define "a party" for this situation.
2) If DCL only cancels 1 stateroom, would the insurance cover the other staterooms? That question needs to be asked of your insurance provider.

I was supposed to cruise on Friday. We were denied boarding because one person in our travel party tested positive (we tested negative). We had separate rooms, but linked reservations. However, we rode in the same vehicle so we were not allowed to sail. They provided us with a paper that said we can get a future cruise credit. We were told that if we had not arrived in the same car, my husband and I would have been able to cruise, while our friend would not.

Too bad that happened to you. Really sucks. Did you have travel insurance? Did you get a sense of how many others were in your same situation?

We did have travel insurance but DCL gave us a future cruise credit so not sure that insurance would do me any good? There were no other cars in the area they brought us to after he tested positive, so I'm not sure about others. The worst part was he got retested after we left the port and got his results and they were negative :(

Depending on the insurance, it may cover the portion of the cost (taxes, port fees?) that is not covered by the DCL future cruise credit. It may be worth checking with your insurance company.

What if someone on the bus, not in your party tests positive?

When DCL has cancelled cruises in the past, the FCC covers cruise fare only. Taxes and fees have been refunded to original form of payment. I would assume this happens in this instance as well, as the reasons for refund over credit in those cases is the same.

I believe DCL has stated other bus passengers are not considered close contacts or being of the same travel party. In other words, DCL will still allow you to board if someone else on your bus tests positive.

Their reasoning is the length of time of ‘togetherness’ is known AND since distancing & masks are in use you aren’t really ‘together’

so the moral of this experience is to travel separately from those in your group that are in different staterooms

I hope they Feel better soon. Edited: just saw they tested negative later on. Great news for the individual but this is so my fear with the rapid testing.

Yes, he tested negative on the second test, never had any symptoms, we have all now tested negative (we were negative at the port and re-tested after) as well as the people who live with the person who originally tested positive, so we can only assume it was a false positive. I am thankful for that because my fear of any of us getting sick is lessened. Just disappointing that it happened at the port and we couldn't sail. Makes me nervous for my next cruise. I think I will always go now assuming I will be turned away and not get excited till they don't.

Unforuntately, for the time being I think that's a good mindset for anyone to have. So sorry that happened to you, though glad no one ever got sick/had symptoms.
