That is too funny about Maddie and the Speeder! In our family it's the opposite, I'm the Star Wars nerd and Anthony has to set DH straight. The next two days of my TR are Star Wars Weekends. So you can skip those if you want

I won't skip them! I keep suggesting to Bryan that we go for SWW because I'm sure that he and Maddie would love it!

We have never seen Muppet Vision. Definitely on the list for next time.

You should check it out! It's pretty cute, and got Maddie really into the Muppets. We now have the original Muppet Movie, the new one, and Muppets Take Manhattan.


Phineas & Ferb are favorites in our house. We didn't have a long wait for them either but my sister waited longer for them than she did for Rapunzel!

I'm glad that you didn't have to wait long either. I've seen how long those lines can get!

RnRC is a great ride! I finally got Chad on it this year.

It has been several years since we did the Muppet show...I need to try and see it again. I think it would seem new since most of your pictures were unrecognizable to me!

Oh my gosh, I was a few updates behind. Glad you made it out of DTD and eventually to DHS. I do have to stick up for the Swalphin a little. I've stayed there lots of times (they have an awesome military discount) and while they are not as "disney-fied" as some of the resorts, they do have all disney stuff in the gift shops and some great dining (including an overlooked character meal!). The rooms are also lovely (really, nicer than the GF), and you can't beat the location. I'm sorry you ran into some not-so-great employees, but I assure you, there are lots of nice people working there too- AND- they serve Starbucks coffee at the Swan

I thought that the SwanorDolphin was really pretty. I would definitely stay there in almost any city. I was just a little disappointed in the staff. I'm sure that it's not a completely accurate representation of the customer service, but it turned me off.

Once we get through staying at all the mods and deluxes, we'll give it a chance!

That walk from the boardwalk to DHS is deceptively long. We often refer to it as the WDW "trail of tears" because it has incited many a meltdown in our family (some people get really whinny when forced to walk long distances).

That's an excellent nickname for it. DH and I have done it just fine before, but a grouchy 5 year old made for a bit of a nightmare.


Oh Pizza Planet, our DH's are very alike. My DH would eat there every day if I agreed, but I HATE DIsney pizza. I think we may have done it once.

Ughh, Disney pizza. I don't hate it, but there's just so many other great choices! I think next time I'll grab a sandwich from Starring Rolls and let them order from there.

It looks like it was a good way to salvage the day. I'm glad that Maddie seemed to enjoy Star Tours, Muppet Vision and the Phineas and Ferb M&G.

We do love Star Tours even though I have no idea what's going on.

I was so relieved that the day was saved, but it wasn't quite as relaxing as we'd hoped.

I have missed a few updates. You have so many readers that I have to use your links to sift through. That is a change. Catching a DtD bus is 5 minutes is incredible luck. I know what you mean about wanting a lot of ornaments. I could easily buy a lot and spend a ton at the Christmas store. Although, I would like to shop without spending two hours in there next time. I think it is cute that Bryan gives in to his little Princess. I give in to the boys all the time. They always go over budget. Someone told me about an Earl of Sandwich here in Vegas. I cannot wait to try it. I know how much Bryan likes it there, but it sounds like a good idea he passed. Extra time at DHS sounds awesome too. It is my favorite.

DHS is my second favorite park, so I was happy to have some extra time there.

I’ve always wanted to stay at the Swan or the Dolphin. That does not make me excited about it either. I am pretty certain they do deduct credits right when you get your luau tickets. They did that to us for Hoop Dee Doo. I wish we would have gotten tickets ahead of time for MBYBBQ, so they did not deduct two credits for Connor by mistake. Hopefully, it all works out.

They did deduct the credits right away, but we had another scare the next day. I'm so glad that you'd tipped me off so I looked it over pretty closely.

I agree that I would not want to waste a deluxe credit at Pizza Planet. Then again, I hate using them for any QS meal. I am really thinking of getting the regular plan next trip, since we are trying restaurants off plan and having full waterpark days where there are no TS restaurants. I think you and Bryan are great parents. Maddie seems like a pretty good kid too. They all have their issues but I like that she realizes when she messes up and apologizes. Xander needs to learn how to do that without being told to do so.

Maddie is an excellent apologizer. I"m trying to get her to stop behaving badly and assuming that saying 'I'm sorry' automatically makes it ok.

I love Center Stage, Coyote Ugly and Toddlers and Tiaras. Crap hates them all, but he does like Star Wars and The Goldfather, lol. I like the Muppets show, but Crap does not. He made us skip it on the last few trips. Next time, I will insist we watch, so Connor can see it. I love the picture of Maddie copying the hippo on the fountain. She is a little entertainer. I bet she is a fantastic performer when she dances.

Love those movies!!! I think that Bryan would gladly skip all of the 'show rides', but Maddie adores them.

It is neat that Phineas and Ferb had a short line. Disney really makes the wait fun for kids, but I will never wait in a long line for that again. Rock and Roller Coaster is awesome. It has been a long time, since I’ve ridden it as well. The pictures of Maddie in front of the big guitar are fantastic. I cannot wait to hear about your experience at the luau. We’ve never done it, because Xander vetoed the food menu.

We haven't. It's not certain that we'll be going back. I have priced some resorts out, but we likely won't commit until around Christmas time.

I had to laugh when you called the "thingy" a "thingy" 'cause that's what I call it too. I know next to nothing about Star Wars so you can only imagine what my trip report looked like when I was writing about our day at Star Wars Weekend. There were referrences to "thingies", "fuzzy characters", etc.

We made our way to the bus stops at Hollywood Studios to wait for a bus that would carry us to the Polynesian Resort. We waited about 20 minutes in the hot sun (does anyone else feel like the bus stops at DHS are hotter than the other parks’?)

On our way I was feeling a little bummed that we’d gone to DHS if only because Maddie and I weren’t able to change into our vaguely tropical dresses that I’d planned for us to wear. I had also been hoping to get to the PR with time to spare so that we could poke around the grounds a bit, but it looked like we’d be heading straight for Luau Cove.



Luau Cove is very easy to find even if you’re not familiar with the resort. There are signs everywhere guiding guests in the right direction. We made it to the check in with time to spare. The CM took our names, looked at our tickets, and directed us toward a very elderly Hawaiian CM who gave us our leis. Another CM standing with her asked how many in our party, and then pointed us toward one of two lines to have our photos taken. I didn’t get the impression that skipping the photo was optional, and we might have since I wasn’t feeling my prettiest (I really wanted to wear that dress darn it!).

Once the photo was taken, we walked further down the path (which was lush with plants and flowers, exactly what I’d imagine a little path in Hawaii to look like) where we checked in again at the hostess stand. There was a bit of a line there, but it moved very quickly and we were shown to our table right away.

We were seated in the very back row of the amphitheater type area. Our table was a 4 top just left of center of the stage. Since we were using DxDP credits, we were getting category 2 seating. I can only assume that category 3 seating is comprised of the tables to the far left and far right sides of the ‘room’ on the same level as we were sitting.

There are two shows every Tuesday through Saturday at 5:15 and 8:00 p.m. The shows last approximately two hours.

Category 1 is located in the lower level, in the center and nearest the stage so you will be as close to the performers as possible. You won't miss a moment of the excitement with these wonderful seats. You'll feel as though you are one of the Polynesian dancers.

Category 2 offers tables in the lower level that are located on either the left or right side of the stage OR upper level tables that are located directly behind the Category 1 seating. All of these seats will give you and your family a great view of the entire stage area and you won't miss a thing! (editor's note: )

Category 3 offers tables in the lower level that are located to the extreme far right or left of the stage, OR the majority of the upper level tables. You will still have a good view of the stage and be able to enjoy all of the excitement of the authentic Polynesian dancing.

When we sat down, the salad and bread was waiting on the table. The salad was similar to the one served at ‘Ohana, but the dressing was not as citrusy. The bread was exactly the same, but not as fresh. Our server appeared quickly and took our drink orders.

Mid way through the salad course, the show began—I think. The show begins with the ‘matriarch’ of a group of young people alone on the stage. The sound system isn’t stellar, so it wasn’t really clear to us that the show was starting. The fact that our table was right outside of the kitchen door may not have helped either. This is an all you care to eat affair, so servers were understandably going in and out of the kitchen constantly. Also not helping? The large pole directly in our sightline. At Wrigley Field you’d get these “obstructed view” tickets pretty cheap.

Anyway, the matriarch said some things that we didn’t really catch and then was joined by a few young people. If I followed the storyline correctly one of the young women was planning to move away so her group of friends (including a ‘tomboy’ character and a young man that she bickered with) were planning to throw a block party of sorts to show her what she’d be missing.

They took a break, and then the main courses were served. I was a little confused because I assumed that the show would flow with the courses of the meal, so to me we should have been getting into the meat (see what I did there?) of the show by then, but it had just gotten underway. The main course consisted of ribs, grilled chicken, wings, pineapple, and rice. Bryan enjoyed the ribs, but we both agreed that the chicken was no better than something we’d make at home. The rice was nothing special, and the wings were underwhelming. All of the food was very similar to what’s served at ‘Ohana, but no where near as good. We weren’t too upset though, we knew that the real attraction was the show.

The ‘action’ resumed during the main course. First the children (and anyone else who wanted to) were invited up for hula lessons. Maddie had a great time with this, but preferred to do her own dance moves rather than hula. After that (I think) we were taught how to say some Hawaiian words. I can’t for the life of me remember any of them.

There was a large group of college students at the table dead center in front of the stage. They were having a great time (not crass or rude, just very, very loud) and the entertainers seemed to get a real kick out of them. This gentleman in particular spent quite a while teaching them alone to really pronounce the words. The kids and the dancer seemed to have a great time feeding off of one another, but everyone else in the amphitheater was looking around seeming to wonder why they weren’t in on the joke.

During dessert, the dancing began. I’ve already mentioned that I assumed that the show would flow with the meal, so I thought that the show must be almost over. However, it had just gotten under way.

Dessert was a dark chocolate volcano. Bryan doesn’t eat chocolate, but our server pretty much dropped them off, asked if we wanted a drink for last call, and took off. We didn’t really have a chance to ask if there were any other dessert options for pickier eaters. I don’t LOVE dark chocolate, but I thought it was okay. Maddie ate every bite.

Because of our seats, Maddie really wasn’t able to see very well but she was a trooper for much of the meal. I could see, but only because I’d put the long lens on the camera, so I was basically holding binoculars.

The dancing was pretty entertaining, but mostly –as I wrote in my trip notes- because the men looked like Chippendale dancers. Bryan was getting a little annoyed at how many pictures I was taking of them, but I told him that it was my duty as a Trip Reporter to do so. You’re welcome ladies-and there's more where these came from if you want 'em. And gents? I took some of the girls too.

Sometime during the show the “tomboy” character was given her predictable makeover moment, and of course she and her male friend realized that they were in love. They danced off into the sunset.

Also, at some point, a few volunteers from the audience were brought up to dance with the pros. The college students went crazy when one of their group was chosen. They really did seem like good kids, and they were having a great time.

By now we’d been done with dessert for quite a while, and had nothing to drink because the server didn’t come back after dessert. We were all growing restless, but I really did want to see the fire dancers.

15 minutes later, Maddie’s eyes had glazed over, and Bryan and I were bored too. We’d made 6 trips to the Ladies’ room for something to do (which was conveniently located right behind our table. The people coming and going from there added to the distraction), but we could no longer ignore the fact that we were done. So, we left.

We didn’t see the fire dancing, we didn’t see the grand finale, we don’t even know if the girl decided not to leave Hawaii after all. The swan may have married her man, or maybe they broke up-we have no idea. We did however enjoy leisurely walking the grounds of the resort (the flowers smelled like heaven), beat the crowd out of the theater, saw the volcano pool, and watched the sun setting from the boat dock. We weren’t disappointed.

I would in no way discourage anyone from giving the Spirit of Aloha Luau a try, in fact we may try it again some day. Here’s what we would do differently: We would pay for preferred seating instead of using dining credits. The people up front seemed to have lots of fun, we may have too if we weren’t way back in the cheap seats. We would book the late show versus the early show (we think that the show dragged in order to have the fire dancers perform at dusk/dark). We would not expect much from the food-or at the very least we wouldn’t book this show for 2 nights after we’ve eaten at ‘Ohana. The food is far superior at the indoor facility. And, lastly we would be prepared for the fact that dessert does not end this experience. Be prepared to be there for quite a while after you’ve finished eating (and drinking).


All in all we’re glad that we gave the Spirit of Aloha a chance. We’d done the Hoop Dee Doo before, and had no real interest in the BBQ so we tried it out. It was an experience that we can say we’ve had, and as I said we may try it again someday. Next trip though? You’ll find us at the Hoop.

We took a boat from the Polynesian Resort and headed toward the Magic Kingdom. Even we aren’t crazy enough to do DTD and 2 parks on our “relaxing day”, we caught a bus to CBR.

We were going to get our swimming time in after all.

Once back at the resort, Bryan walked ahead of Maddie and I so that he could email our lawyer (you’ll remember that we were attempting to buy and sell a house at the time), and Maddie and I took our time strolling over the bridge. I was teasing Maddie that if the pool was too crowded we’d have to all pile into the bathtub for our little swim when we ran into Katt789 and her friend Tanissa on the bridge! We said hello and chatted about what we’d done with our days, and then Maddie interjected that we had to go so that we didn’t have to swim in the bathtub. I hadn’t taken the time to explain to Katt why she said that, so I hope this clears some things up! I know we don't have pictures, but I swear it happened!

Back in the room we found Maddie’s friends frolicking on the bed again. My guess is that Stitch was the one trying on her pajamas

We changed quickly and headed back out. Bryan had finished up his business so he was able to join us right away. On the bridge Maddie started singing her favorite song (at the time-these days she’s way more into Call Me Maybe, Payphone, and Rainbow Connection)—Moves Like Jagger. Then she told us that she keeps her ‘Moves like Jagger’ in a safe place so that she didn’t loose them when she shakes her booty. Feeding off of our reactions (we were cracking up) she proceeded to collect more ‘moves’ all the way to the pool.

We had fun swimming, but the pool wasn’t heated as much as I would have liked and the evenings were pretty cool so we didn’t stay much longer than and hour. We stopped into OPR for a snack (dinner hadn’t exactly filled us up) and went back to the room.

Maddie gathered more ‘moves’ on the way back (and encouraged us to do the same-she and I got lots, her dad collected none). We got in our jammies and had snacks in bed. Maddie asked us how to say “Sorry I was a bad girl” in Hawaiian, and we asked why she needed to know that since she hadn’t been bad. She just wanted to know in case she was bad in the future.

She was in a pretty funny mood, and when her dad threatened to turn Stacey off if she didn’t go to sleep she began some fake snoring. She feel asleep mid-fake snore.

Bryan and I watched some TV, I took notes for the TR, and we went to sleep. We had another big morning ahead of us—we were going to see Jake!

We've been to the luau two times and, both times, we were lucky and had a table very close to the front despite the fact that we were using dining plan credits. But, we did go to the second showing so that probably had something to do with it.

I am bummed that you weren't able to make it to the end so you could have seen the fire twirler. He was the guy in your first set of pictures that was getting a kick out of the college aged kids. His part of the show is amazing!

To our group, it wasn't the food or the storyline that made the show...it was the dancing. And, no, I'm not just talking about the hot bods.

Glad you still managed to get some swim time in, Maddie is just super cute in her princess bathing suit, I love the little tutu skirt!

I'm sorry that you didn't have a good experience either. I hadn't heard great things about it, but we wanted to see for ourselves.

It was hotter than the blazes in there! And the weather was super mild during our trip.

I totally agree about the chatty parts--they were hard to hear, hard to follow, and seemed a little contrived and unnecessary.

Most of the dancing was cool, though I do wish I'd had the chance to see the fire dancing.

I love the Hoop, and can't wait to go back. I think Maddie would really like it, and the food is great there!

Oops, we were posting at the same time. Maddie and her "moves" crack me up! You mean you didn't peel her grapes and feed them to her? Did you at least fan her with palm fronds?

Would you believe that we didn't offer to do that? Terrible parents.
