Is the use month for your year assigned, or do you select it yourself? Is it based on what's available, when you visit or when you close?

Is there any perceived advantage to having a particular use month? I understand that each would have the 11 month and 7 month window...so if you wanted to be at WDW for Christmas each year...then would a February anniversary month be optimal?

I don't have a preference at this point, but I will either receive my tax money or bonus within the next 4-5 weeks and was thinking of putting it to good use.

4 + inches of snow since 5 tonight...but the skiings' good... <IMG WIDTH="15" HEIGHT="15" SRC="/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif" alt="razz">

Your understanding is flawed.

Use year has nothing to do at all with making reservations. Nothing.

You make reservations using the 7-11 month windows knowing only that you will have points available at the time of the actual vacation.

If I had a November use year and no points left at all in the current year, it is Feb 14, remember, I have no points now, but get another allotment in November, I can make reservations for the first two weeks of December now.

This is where use year is important, and it really isn't that important. Let's take your "understanding"...I have a Jan use year, I get my points Jan 1, on Jan 14, I make my december reservations....on oct 13, gramma Edna, your ex-wifes mother, but the grandmaother of your kids, croaks. Its a terrible hardship, your kids can't stop crying and won't go to Disneyworld since it reminds them of all the trips they took with Gramma Edna, you have to cancel the trip.

Since you have a January use year, and even though you cancelled way before the thirty day limit, now you are passed any banking window and your points must be used or they will expire on Dec 31.

See???

If you had a November use year and Edna dropped on Oct 13, you would have plenty of time to bank your points, reschedule your trip, anything.

The best use year is somewhat before your useual vacation time.

My use year is September, I only vacation to WDW from Sept to Jan, so even though I didn't know it at the time, I actually got the perfect use year for my travels.

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs", Karl Marx, pretty sick, huh?

Thank You,

We typically go for the Food and Wine Festival in November and also have gone in Mar/April timeframe, so following your illustration we would possibly benefit from a similar use year.

Ignorance may be bliss, but I feel more comfortable with knowledge... :)

As to your question as to how use year is assigned. Disney is just usually selling a use year that begins 4 to 5 months before the month of purchase (when you close has nothing to do with that cycle.) You can request a use year different from what is being offered but there will be limitations particularly if you are using magical beginnings (under which Disney buys back half your first year's points for $10 a point and applies it to your down payment).Disney prefers not to vary from its offered use month when using that program. Any use year that begins 6 months or less before the time you usually go solves that cancellation problem mentioned above as you will have time to bank if you cancel. And as noted it has no impact on making reservations. Just remember the simple rules: At your home resort you can always make ressies 11 months in advance, 7 months at others, and you can go any time of year. Use year is irrelevant to those rules.

We just bought our first 150 points the other day and I'm already thinking of adding on. When we decide to add on, do we get a different use year? Are we able to get the same use year?

you can get the same use year. we have two add ons all have same use year aug..
