Who hates the dentist?

I am sitting here dreading the next 2 hours. In 1 hour I have to be at the dentist. :scared:

I have to have no less than 4 fillings, that is if you count the one he wants to redo, and I do count it! Lest you think I am some kind of slob who never brushes or flosses, 6 months ago I had 0 cavitites. Zero! How do I go from having none to 4? I am doing everything the same. I actually thought I was doing a better job of keeping my teeth clean. :confused3

And I jsut hate being trapped in that chair! For some reason it makes me clausterphobic!

I know I am not alone, so I just wanted to post and vent and maybe here from some of you who feel the same way.

I do. I ask for nitrous. That's how I get thru it. My dr just gave me a script for 8 xanax to get me into the chair and keep from cancelling the apt.

I share your anxiety completely! I hate going to the dentist for any reason since I have super sensitive teeth and even just getting them cleaned makes me dig my nails into the chair. Unfortunately I had a horrible (can we say Little Shop of Horrors-esque) dentist until I was in my early 20's. The first time I went to my new dentist he said he needed to redo 11 of my fillings because the previous dentist didn't drill out all the decay and now it was decaying under the fillings :furious: . Talk about a bad day! Now my brother has become a dentist and I'm planning on going to him to have all future fillings, caps, etc done (even though he's almost two hours away, my parents could watch my DS while I'm at the dentist and when I'm still numb after). I've already told him, in no uncertain terms, that he WILL be giving me something to help me relax and not panic. Did I mention that Novacaine only works for about 20 min on me? It took a loonnnggg time for me dentist to believe me on that one :scared1:  Ideally, I'd like to take something to relax starting about 2 days before the appt and then be totally under anesthesia until they're ready to send me home. I always say the best and least painful procedure I've ever had done was the surgical (in the hospital) removal of all 4 impacted wisdom teeth at once. I was eating chips the next day and didn't need any pain meds. Now for a regular filling I take tylenol and don't chew on that side for at least a week :sad2: . Best of luck with your appt. Try to imagine you're walking around WDW and hearing the sounds of the parks instead of the drill.

Due to complications having my wisdom teeth removed, and being completely awake and aware of what was going on, I HATE going to the dentist!
I honestly have severe anxiety attacks. My new dentist has even offered to prescribe Valium for my visits. I don't like to take meds, so I am going to try Benadryl first. Benadryl usually sedates me pretty well. Sorry you have to go, but better you than me. ;)

Me
I also have 4 appts coming up. One for my first ever crown. I also use nitrous and take valium.

I used to, until I found Dr. Joy (her first name). She is fantastic. Very gentle and thorough. Now I go twice a year and get excellent outcomes to my check-ups.

Find someone you are comfortable with and it's a breeze.

I used to like going to the gynocologist better than the dentist. Now, there about the same.

I don't like going to the dentist at all either. But I do something that I've been doing since I was in 8th grade - I just bring my cd player & listen to some music while there. It makes the time go faster, & maybe it'll calm your nerves a bit too.

I totally understand! I HATE going!

When I was younger I went to an awful dentist. He was fixing a filling or something and I swear he was drunk! It was so painful. Since then I'm always anxious about it.

In 2004 during a cleaning I got the worst news......that I'd need a ROOT CANAL! I think I almost fainted right there. I was told it wasn't needed right away but the sooner the better. Well so of course I don't go until I'm withering in pain in the fall on 2005. My first appt I literally had tears running down my face and not b/c of the pain but b/c I was terrified! It's over and done with now but I will always hate going to the dentist.

I did that this morning too! I figured that I might as well ruin one day off instead of ruining two. :rotfl:

Just got back from my fillings. At least he waited until I was good and numb before he started drilling. My whole lower jaw and the upper right side are all numb. Now I just have to wait for the novacaine to wear off. :bitelip:

I too hate the dentist, the smell alone sends me over the edge. I can't even take my own kids, my DH takes them. I have tried it all, Xanax, Valium, nitrious, etc....

If you can even get me in the office the chance of me staying is slim and they know not to even let me sit in the lobby.

I had a couple of bad experiences at the dentist when I was a kid so I have always hated going. It's worse now because I don't have dental ins anymore. Now I have to pay alot more for the pleasure.

As an adult with braces- I'd have to say that i used to hate the dentist now i hate the ortho more! :furious:

I use to hate the dentist because of bad experiences. But I recently found a new one who I love. In fact I love going to see him because he is so hot. he is so nice. He always says nice things during the numerous procedures I need. Like your doing a great job sweetie.

Oh, I understand what you're going through! For years, I was so proud of the fact that despite having extensive dental work done due to a car accident, I was still a rock when going to the dentist. Then one day that changed. I'm not even sure what sent me over the edge, but suddenly even simple cleanings began to set off near panic attacks. I played tough for a couple more cleanings, then finally gave in and asked for nitrous. Mistake. I went mental on them. By the time the cleaning was over, I was convinced my dentist was telling me he'd discovered a fatal disease, that I should go on, live my life the best I could but just know that soon, I'd be croaking, but hey... don't worry about it. HUH!?!?! How embarrassing. Needless to say, he gives me two valium AND nitrous now. Seems to be the perfect cocktail for me. Whew!! Finally!

Best wishes to you, I hope the appt. went well. :)

I dont like the dentist but some of them Dental assitants have the most beautiful eyes as they look down on you

Just reading this gives me palpitations. I have an address and phone number of a dentist that does 'sedation' dental work (since I probably would need general anesthesia to go), It has been on my desk about 6 months, and every time I think I can make an appointment, I have such an anxiety attack that I just can't do it. Unfortunately, when I was a kid, my parents NEVER took us to the dentist, and didn't stress brushing, and taking care of teeth. My first visit was at about 15, when I had such a bad toothache, that I didn't sleep for 2 days. I then had numerous fillings, since my teeth were in such bad condition. My mouth was in such a painful state for so long, that now I brush constantly. I still need to go for some 'work', but I am just too chicken to go. My kids go every 6 months for cleanings...religiously,(DH takes them, since I can't sit in the office and hear the drill, and the smells just about gag me) and I am always bugging them to brush. I don't want them to EVER have to go through what I did with my teeth.

I would rather give birth than go to the dentist.....seriously.

I was just there yesterday and have to go back for a filling. I hate going to the dentist too.
Hubby no cavities ever. Hope my kids have his genes.

I'd strongly suggest that many of you do some serious shopping for a dentist you can feel comfortable with. Talk to some friends/co-workers/neighbors. There must be some good dentists in the vicinity. Surely the sedation treatment would put you at ease? Or perhaps I have discovered the greatest dentist in the world. In which case, you're welcome to stay the night in the guest room. :)

I gotta chime in here with praise for my dentist. The dentist I had for about 10 years sold his practice to this young, female dentist & I figured I'd give her a try (besides, the hygenist was staying & I liked her). I love the new dentist! My Mom is 89 years old and has all her own teeth. She hated going to the dentist and I finally convinced her to go to mine. She was sold upon their first meeting! This dentist has an attitude with my mother that is perfect. "Let's fill when we have to, but let's just maintain the teeth!" Prior to seeing my dentist, my Mom had gotten a work order from a sleezy dental clinic and this dentist was shocked at all they wanted to do to her. The right dentist can make all the difference!
