I got called by DS5's school to come pick him up this morning, school nurse said he had "red watery eyes" and "due to the recent outbreak of pink eye in his class" wanted me to come pick him up. I got there (poor little guy was scared to death sitting in the clinic, he's my nervous one) and brought him home, called his ped's office and they called him in a prescrip. for antiobiotic drops. But his eyes aren't RED. One is a little bloodshot and the other looks fine to me. There were 4 other kids who had pinkeye in his class last week....
Is that what pink eye is?? Bloodshot eyes?? How long till he can go back to school? I guess I should have asked the nurse these things.........

With bacterial conjunctivitis there is a thick discharge causing the eyelids to get all crusty, esp. in the morning. I had it 4 times in 3 months last year!

His eye was crusty this morning, I thought it was from his cold though. This is our first pink eye experience!! Hoping DS2 doesn't get it too!!

A couple of years ago, while traveling my DD got it. She then shared it with my DS, who also was in the giving spirit, so he passed it on to my DW. Well, as you can imagine, it wasn't long before I joined in the fun as well.
It is very contagious, so you might want to keep your little guy away from everybody else until it runs it's course. Since you will be near him, make sure you keep your hands away from your face, and wash your hands non-stop all day long.
It does cause some discomfort, and a whole lot of itchyness (which I guess is why it is so contagious).

If the school nurse suspects "pink eye", you should take him to your pediatrician. My kids get Tobramycin drops or ointment when they get it. It's very contagious, don't try to cure it yourself. :)

My DD had it about 3 weeks ago. She was aloud back to school after she was on the drops for 24 hours. Her eyes looked alittle blood shot and really watery.

Stress hand washing, my DD was really good about it. None of us got it this time. Also his bedding should be washed and any wash clothes or towels he used near his face.

I've had it too many times to count-LOL! Although not that i'm not teaching preschool i rarely get it. Similsan eye drops work great too...them have them at CVS. Just make sure your DS washes his hands alot or uses hand sanitizer...it spreads very, very easily!

we're going thru our first bout with it, too. my 2 year olds speech pathologist was here the other day, but only had a few toys with her. another kid she sees has pink eye and these were the only ones she got a chance to bleach. I'm guessing one slipped thru the cracks, because the next day my daughter had a slightly pink eye and gook, especially after waking up. because her eyes weren't bright red, or even completely covered in the pin, I just didn't think she really had it. Finally called the peds on monday morning (it had spread to the other eye) and they called a script in. the ointment is a PITA, at least with my fussy, long lashed 2 year old. But she's on her 3rd day of it and she's already improved a ton.

hope your son's clears up soon. I've been washing my hands like mad and trying to keep the other 2 kids away from her eyes at least and so far (knock wood) nobody but her seesm to have it. but I don't think we'll be in the clear regarding it for a while yet. not really sure, since its our first time.

My son had had pink eye and we thought the baby had come down with it too. I called the peds. office so they could send in a script for the drops for her. They wouldn't do it and wanted to see her. So, off we go.

Come to find out she had a sinus infection that was so bad it was "weeping" out of her tear ducts. Poor baby.

Looked just like pink eye. If the drops don't work, take the child to the Dr.

It could be from his cold. Just means the little germs have settled in his eye(s) as well as his respitory system.

My kids have all had it and it starts out with bloodshot eyes for them. DH had it once and he kept blowing it off as nothing. Finally I got him to go to the dr. DH's eyes were completly red where they should be white, red like overripe tomatoes red. The dr gave him some drops and he was better in a few days.

It is very contagious but only before symptoms appear which is why it's spread so easily.

Oh you'll know pink eye when you see it - sticky, gucky eyes that itch like crazy - and it happens in minutes - I swear! I dressed my son and drove him for pictures - by the time I drove from our house to the studio - bingo - pink eye presented.

Lucky boy gets all his own towels until it runs it's course and wash, wash, wash your hands and all his linen ...

Good luck to you.

When do I wash his linens?? After the pink eye is gone? Every day?? Just during his symptoms? I keep reading to wash his bedsheets/towels, but WHEN??

I washed daily for 6 days. She was on the drops for 5.

Pink eye is nasty....I have had it several times. It causes the eyes to become bloodshot and crusty in the mornings and sometimes throughout the day. He will probably need to be out of school 2-3 days...it is extremely contagious. If he touches his eye, then touches someone else, and they touch their eye...BANG....they now have it.

BTW, you can help with the crustiness be mixing Johnson's baby shampoo with water, dipping a cotton ball in it and wiping the eyes. It will help during the day (this helpful hint from my optometrist).

Funny that you just posted this after we just gave DS1 his eyedrops for pink eye.

He's never had it before and neither has DS 5, however my son got crusty eyes on Sunday night, and they were very watery the day before. On Monday his right eye was red, and underneath his eye was very red and swollen - almost looking like he was punched in the eye.

Luckilly my Doc called in a prescription for drops saving me a trip to his office. He's been on the drops now for 1.5 days and it's already starting to go away.

Hope your son is feeling better soon.

My youngest woke up today with it. It is so not fun and my eyes are starting to itch. I hope it is just my mind.

Sorry, but it's not all in your mind. My eyes are itching to death today too........I had to wear my lovely glasses today instead of my contacts. Mind you I haven't updated my glasses in about 7 years, so they are WAY out of style (think big) and ugly. This stinks.
