Who has a Government job?

My DS is looking for a job with a government agency. He's applied, tested and interviewed for a county government job. There are some jobs posted in near-by cities that he's doing the paperwork on now. How difficult is it to get an entry-level job? He's a recent college grad with a degree in Public Administration. He doesn't want to do a Graduate Program just yet - maybe in the future. Does anyone have any hints or suggestions on how to secure one of these types of jobs?

What type of work is he interested in? Would he be interested in federal government work, or is he more interested in local government?

oh - I guess it would be a job as an "analyst". Or an Administrative Asst. He's not a budget or accountant guy in particuular.

Has he checked with any Gov't contracting agencies - ie General Dynamics, Cisco, Lockheed Martin,etc.... - Not sure of who is on the West Coast so these may only be East Coast Corps. It's a good way to get his foot in the door - if this is the avenue he is looking for - Good luck on the hunt and keep us up to date!!!

Has he checked the county or state government website yet? There might be job postings there. Also, the OPM (Office of Personnel Management) has a website for federal jobs, some of which are not based in DC, so he might be able to find something in CA. Is there a specific agency or office for which he wants to work?

I work for a governmental agency. I got my foot in the door through a temporary agency and then was hired permanently. I started off with an entry-level position and have been promoted twice in the six years I have been here.

I do realize that not many governmental agencies do it this way though.

this is a good suggestion. i'm currently an analyst at a govt contractor and lots of people from here go to the government or are coming from it. it is a good way to get your foot in the door.

these sites not only list the jobs, they give some VERY good info on how to get a job with the gov't. there are also a few books that give in-depth info!

These are great sites.

My DW works for the Federal Government. She just had her 15 year anniversary at her work. When she started, she was informed by a friend - who was already working there - that they were hiring. She simply went in and took the Civil Service Test. After getting her results, she interviewed, and was hired. In 15 years, she has moved up the ladder quite nicely!! :cool1:  :teeth:

I have been with the feds 8 years. Definitely check the OPM website for federal jobs. I understand some agencies here in DC have lots of entry level jobs open, but don't know about out in CA. Just keep sending in applications!

If he isn't a veteran, it sometimes makes it hard to get into the Federal service. Veterans always get first shot at jobs. If there are a lot of applicants, veterans may be the only one who qualify.

Luckily for me, my husband (also federal employee) transferred to a very rural area of the country. They had a position vacant for a while that I qualified for. The Service Chief asked me if I might be interested in applying (he knew I was an engineer, as was he). I did and I've been with the fed gov't for about 14 years.

Check out USAJobs. Look for jobs that have no closing date. That means they have lots of jobs available in that position or they did not get any candidates for the position.

He might need to take a lower paying job just to get into the system. My husband interned with the Fed Gov't as part of his Master's degree program. That's how he got on since neither he nor I are veterans.

Sometimes you just have to be in the right place at the right time.
