Who cooks while at WDW ?

We order a bunch of food from Garden Grocer and cook VERY simple meals, . While we'd love to go out to eat more, the kids are at the age where sitting down in a restaurant for 2 hrs is basically torture for them (hence, in turn, is torture for all us adults!). They'd rather eat real quick in the room, then off to the next fun activity.

It’s nice to have the option to cook. Publix for some groceries. Cereal, toast, bagels and the like for breakfast. Sandwiches for lunch. Plenty of snack foods, ice cream, microwave foods etc. A few dinner meals made in the room really allows you to save money for the parks. I made steaks with all the trimmings for a fraction of the price on our last stay in April. The dishwasher makes clean up a breeze. Having a car makes shopping much easier. Though you can order groceries.

We always do breakfast in the room, usually get some coldcuts for a lunch or two as well. We also usually have meatball subs one night with a bagged salad. Very easy to make, just frozen meatballs, sauce, provolone cheese and sub rolls.

We do a mix of eating out and cooking in. I find that I don't get my normal amount of fruits and veggies when we eat out. I'll start to feel sluggish if we eat out too much.

I can honestly say that in the 10 years we've been members we've never "cooked" a meal while on vacation. We do purchase items for breakfast (cereal, milk, juice) but that's it!

I barely cook at home so I can not imagine wanting to try it on vacation. Of course, my DH (who does most of it) says that is why I SHOULD!!!!:lmao:

We are going for our first stay in a 1 bedroom when we check in to BLT Monday, after spending 3 nights at BCV in a studio.

The only thing I can see us doing in the future is to pick up things for breakfast and snacks. Right now, we do the dining plan but if that changes in a way that makes it not for us, then maybe we will add things for lunches.

I do know that when we stayed at the FW cabins our very first Disney trip, I bought a TON of food thinking I was going to cook every night. I threw out at least 3/4 of what we bought. The kids ate a lot of PB & J's and the snacks, but not the other stuff we bought. We were only eating one meal out a day, either a CS lunch or dinner but that seemed to be enough, with the snacks and sandwiches to keep everyone happy.

After that trip, I learned my lesson.

We just completed a very similar trip: 5 nights BCV studio and then 3 nights 1BR BLT. (and we actually had 1 night at OKW at the beginning of the trip).

You are going to LOVE IT!! Have a great trip!

DH cooks!! Actually he is a much better cook than I am, but at home I'm the one usually doing most of the week day cooking as I'm as sahm and he is working. But on vacation, DH enjoys cooking. When we go to HHI DVC, we (he) cooks most of our meals. At WDW it depends on the trip. Sometimes we do DDP, other times we do just a few meals out for dinner, cs for lunch in the parks, and breakfast always in the villa. And at times when the budget really needed to be trimmed we have done most of our meals in the villa, packed a lunch to eat in the parks, and breakfast in the villa. But hey we were still at WDW and it saved a bunch of cash!

When we eat in, its always easy stuff like:
tacos
spaghetti and meatballs
chicken quesidillas
fajitas
nachos

I'll be cooking. We are going for 9 days and will be cooking most of the meals. It will save us a ton and I since I have young ones I can cook to their needs. I am a bit of a control freak with what I feed them and their little bodies!

We will be doing 2 or 3 character breakfasts and one dinner out for me and the hubby and possibly one or two counter services in the park but all other meals will be in the room.

Certainly nothing against those who choose to cook, but does anyone else here find it gross to smell the cooking food when walking to their villa?

Not sure why I find it nauseating. It smells good when my neighbors at home cook..

Good for you ! :thumbsup2 Another Great Mom thinking about the kiddies well being. I love it !

I really think we'll just be eating some cereal and toast in the morning and buying some cold cuts and fruit. Other than that, we might have a beer or two in the villa. :rolleyes1

Thank you!!! I am so excited. We leave on a 6:00 am flight Friday morning. My DH has not yet stayed at BLT so I am so happy that his first stay is in 1 bedroom.

We always did the DDP. For our trip in Oct we are planning on cooking. We plan on having sandwiches, tacos & rice, spaghetti & meatballs, pizza, & hot dogs. We are planning on eating out one night at Boma. Hopefully it will work out, because it will save us allot of money. More money to spend on me :woohoo:

Update: Since I started this thread I've scored the following ADR's

LeCellier, O'Hana, Garden Grill and Tusker House for breakfast. But, like I said before.... we will eat cereal and toast in the AM and have some cold cuts for later in the day.

We will be meeting my wife's Son, his girlfriend and her seven year old daughter so we thought we'd treat them to GG and Tusker House with the characters.

Now.... we just have to pass ROFR> :goodvibes

Last trip was the first time we weren't on the dining plan and I think it went a lot smoother than our prior trips. We tend to stay for at least a week so before our kids would start to get tired of eating out all the time near the end of our stay.

We shopped at Publix and Super Walmart and had every breakfast in our room (eggs, cereal, bagels, etc...), lunch was deli sandwiches when we weren't eating at the parks and dinner was simple meals like tacos, bugers and hot dogs, rotisserie chicken and sandwiches and soup. In the end we probably saved at least $500 and a lot of time so we'll definitely do it again for our next trip.

Makes sense to me....... if you are on the dining plan you have to make ADR's and then you have to be here by this time, there by that time and I think it ruins your trip. If we didn't have some family meeting us there we wouldn't even make ARD's and we'd eat whenever and where ever we felt like it. But it's their first time coming and we all know what that's like.

But eating in the villa just sounds so nice. :cloud9: Thanks for your thoughts. :thumbsup2

Our trips are 10-15 days so it would cost a small fortune if we did not eat in the villa most of the time (usually 8 or 9 extended family members). We do very simple meals and lots of leftovers. I am guessing we spend 10% of what we would of we ate all meals out.
