Who are the Smithereens?

I saw that the Smithereens replaced Pebo Bryson form 10/10-10/12 at the F&W Festival. I am showing my (old) age by asking who they are. What type of group are they and who do they appeal to? Thank for any responses.

American rock band. Fairly heavy guitar sound, but not punk or metal. Mostly a cult following; their concerts can be long and somewhat esoteric. They did have a taste of bigger success with a minor hit, "A Girl Like You," several years ago.

They were kinda/sorta popular in the mid to late 1980s with the punk rock set. I *think* they had like one hit record but can't remember it for the life of me.

Whoever they were, they have to be better than Pebo.

For me, that would have been an awesome switch...not sure about Peebo fans. The Smithereens are an alternative rock group from the mid to late 80s and 90s.

They're NJ-based so more well-known here. I saw them open for the British band Squeeze in the mid 80's in the Meadowland Arena, then I actually saw them again just last year at a Beatles festival near Giants Stadium. They had just released their version of the Beatles first album 'Meet the Beatles' and they called it 'Meet the Smithereens.' Basically paying homage to the Beatles who were their inspiration.

They're very down to earth guys. Both before and well after they played their set at the Beatles fest, they hung out in the lobby of the hotel to sign autographs and just BS with everyone.

At the F&W Festival I'd imagine they'll play Beatles songs in addition to their own material.

Good rock band from the 80's. Saw them live a few times in Chicago. Usually an opening act for bigger groups. My brothers band used to play with them often
"Blues before and after", "Girl like you", "Only a memory"
Good catchy rock and roll

Thanks for the responses. I am surprised I don't them, but I try to catch on of their performances on 10/10. I thought maybe I did know them because they were a more recent band.

Best show ever on television, IMO. I just love it. Never enjoyed a show more. :thumbsup2

I'm hoping the mini-billboard is still up at the Uni parks. Gonna stand between Shawn and Gus and have my picture taken. :teeth: Forgot last time.

Sorry 'bout the OT, OP! The only reason I even remember The Smithereens is that I think they were on MTV and a friend of mine who was into The Cure and New Order and stuff like that liked them.

Now that someone mentioned it, I remember "A Girl Like You" sort of. And I'm not thinking of the Foreigner one.

My F&W choices are Sister Hazel, David Sanborn, Jon Secada and Spyro Gyra. Nothing too exciting...but all better than Pebo, too. :)

doh! :headache: i just realized that we'll actually be there at this time! i'd go see them for sure- exactly where and when are they playing?

American Garden Theatre in Epcot, 10/10, 10/11 and 10/12 @ 5:15; 6:30 and 7:45. There are other bands on other nights of the F&W Festival, but I believe the performances are the same times for each night. Steve Soares web site lists the bands for the various nights of the F&W.

thanks! i just googled his site and got the info--- didn't even know this --- hopefully we can take it in-- i assume they get fairly crowded. do you need tix? i've never been to the America Gardens Theatre -

Actually, they just released their second CD of Beatles tunes. Their first, released in 2006, was "Meet the Smithereens" and was a recreation of the American album "Meet the Beatles." This month they released "B-Sides- the Beatles", recreating great songs on the flip sides of Beatles hits.

They do a great job with the Beatles songs, recording them not as a "sound-alike" band, but using the same arrangements. Highly recommended for fans of the Fab Four!

This is brilliant news! We have reserved seating for the show as part of our Party for the Senses tickets, but weren't going to bother (sorry Peabo). But I really liked The Smithereens back in the day, so I think I'll be dragging the other half along to this now.

They are not at all a punk band as some poster said. They are a solid american rock band that got some play on top 40 but mostly college radio. I remember them for "wall of sleep" and "blood and roses"
I would definately listen to them live.
