Whirlpool not honoring my warranty UPDATE- THEY'RE PAYING!!

If you don't mind, which model number was this? I've been considering a new microwave - either a specific Sharp or a specific Kenmore. Rather not risk buying anything with even ONE record of catching fire!

FYI Whirlpool makes most Kenmore appliances. Just letting you know in case you didn't want to financially support Whirlpool because of this thread :)

and Amana, Roper, Maytag, Kitchenaid and Kenmore.

I knew about Amana, but I am surprised by Maytag and Kitchenaid. I thought they were competitors.
I have never even heard of Roper.

It's amazing to me. I have never had any problems with Whirlpool. I haven't had any need to call them. They have worked for years and years and years. I will continue to tell people to buy there products. :thumbsup2

Are people really not going to buy products from Whirlpool based on one person word? When you don't even have all the facts just one person side of the story:sad2:

While you make a good point here, the fact is that most of us buy goods and services based on references from our friends and families. I have already posted direct quotes from the promise Whirlpool made to me in writing back in September. If Whirlpool ever decides to respond to my requests in writing I will also be happy to post those. However I have been told directly by the executive offices that they will do nothing. I have also been told that they refuse to put that in writing. If they were really in the right why won't they commit that to writing? Also don't just take my word for it. Google Whirlpool Warranty and see the issues that many many consumers have had getting them to live up to their warranty promises, including a class action suit filed in 2007. I wish I had known when I bought my unit.

People can choose to believe what I say or not. Best of luck to you whatever you do. I'm glad to hear to hear that your Whirlpool appliances have worked out well for you and you haven't had to deal with the warranty issues....I wouldn't wish this fight and financial loss on anyone.

FYI: Whirlpool doesn't make all the Kenmore Appliances, LG makes some of them. Also I did look at Kenmore appliances now and would feel more comfortable buying from Sears and the warranty that they offer even if it was manufactured by Whirlpool. Although I didn't actually buy one, we considered it.

Did you bother to read the thread? There are those here who said they wouldn't. No need to shake your head in disapproval at them

OP, any updates?

Since I posted my complaint about what happened with my Sharp microwave, I wanted to post an update. I just got off the phone with Sharp, and they are going to pay to have our microwave repaired, or of it can't be repaired they're going to do something to resolve the situation. I'm going to drop it by the repair place today. :thumbsup2 to Sharp for standing by their product even though the warranty has expired. I wish I had called them sooner! I assumed the worst (that they wouldn't do anything) and I should have given them a chance.

Congratulations! See that, there are some companies out there willing to stand behind their products.

As far as my problem no update to give you yet. We are so busy trying to get ready for the holidays that I couldn't focus on this negativity anymore.
I am e-mailing all the documents over to the investigative reporter and right after the first of the year I'm getting back on Whirlpool. I'll keep you guys posted.

:thumbsup2

YooHoo....Whirlpool people are you listening? And she told two friends and she told two friends and so on and so on.

Are you ready to pay me what you promised me yet?

All joking aside Lucille1963 I'm glad to hear it. This really stinks and I wouldn't wish this fight on anyone.

Yes, Whirlpool-this DOES happen. I used to be a devoted Whirlpool customer. But a few years ago, my parents bought a Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator and within a few months it was dripping water and they got the big runaround from Whirlpool. So when we were in the market for a new appliance, this previously Whirpool family bought a different brand.
Think how many customers you've lost this time.

For anyone on the thread that has an appliance conk out on them after the warrenty expires, CHECK WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY (assuming you used a CC to buy it). Some CC's will double (or in some way extend) the warrenty on item's purchased using their card. If you can't get anyway with the manufacturor, you may have some luck with your CC company. Check your CC benifits and see if you have this coverage.

It may not be the only thing I base my decision on, but you can bet I'll take it into consideration when doing my research before purchasing an appliance in the future. Especially in today's down economy consumers need to know they can trust their appliance to hold up, or, if it doesn't, that they can trust the company to make things right. Given how much appliances cost they shouldn't be disposable objects. If they could make a refrigerator that lasted 20+ years 20 years ago then one would think our tech advancements would increase their life-span... not shorten it to just 3-5 years.

Exactly my point. :thumbsup2 Thanks for your comments.

Actually...exactly the opposite is bound to happen.

20 years ago, appliances were SIMPLE. They didn't need circuit boards and computer chips to operate. Once manufacturers made things "easier" for the consumer...push-button instead of dials, touch-screens, more complex combinations of wash and rinse cycles, different size ice cubes, cube or crushed, adding water filters to in-door dispensers...the inevitable obsolescence arrived.

We all know that computer technology is outdated almost as soon as it hits the sales floor. Bigger, better, faster chips. Older technology (and when I say older, I mean 3-5 years old) doesn't get supported in favor of newer technology. That's why appliances don't last as long: many time, the replacement parts to service them simply aren't available anymore because we want things "bigger, better, faster". We want it, and we want it now.

Manufacturers are only giving folks what they clamor for.

I see it in washers and dryers. These front-loader duos that cost thousands. "Gotta have it...its great! Saves water, more efficient, bigger loads." My guess is in the long run, even considering your savings in water, you're spending MORE because that big computerized machine costs a fortune to fix. The special soap probably costs more too. Does anyone (other than a huge family) really have 30 pairs of jeans they need to wash in one load?

I complained about this very thing. Why did appliances last 20+ years and now 8 years??? The salesman said we live in a throw away society and he has people who "upgrade" appliances every few years, they think they must have and newest and best (could this be why everyone is in debt?). He said one lady had to have a red washer and dryer and replaced her 2 year old set.

I searched the business news and and there has been no bankruptcy filing by Whirlpool. They had enough money to acquire the bankrupt company so they are not broke. I don't see how a supplier going under would have any effect on the OP's warranty but then again I am not a lawyer. To me the warranty is a contract and since Whirlpool still exists they must honor it.

Whirlpool acquires assets of W.C. Wood

Dec. 9--OTTAWA -- A Canadian bankruptcy court on Tuesday approved Whirlpool Corp.'s offer to acquire the assets of the bankrupt W.C. Wood Corp.

A Canadian court put W.C. Wood into receivership Nov. 16 and appointed BDO Dunwoody to oversee the liquidation of W.C. Wood's assets. Last week, Ken Pearl, who is in charge of the W.C. Wood receivership for BDO Dunwoody, told The Lima News that several proposals had been brought forward by companies looking to acquire products, materials, equipment and plants. Pearl did not immediately return phone messages Tuesday.

Attempts to reach Whirlpool officials also were unsuccessful. Before the Ottawa plant closed, it produced freezers for one of Whirlpool's product lines.

Jeff Loehrke, community development director for the village of Ottawa, knew Whirlpool officials had planned a tour of the plant weeks ago but said he had not been in contact with Whirlpool and didn't know what they intend to do with the 5,000-squarefoot plant.

"It would be pure speculation on our part at this point, but we do look at this as a positive move," Loehrke said. "It did not go into the hands of a liquidator, and it is in the hands of a relatively local industry." Whirlpool's corporate headquarters is in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Former W.C. Wood President Joe Angi said he had not been associated with the company since Nov. 16 and he had no knowledge of the court filings.

About 150 employees in Ottawa lost their jobs when the company shut down.

UPDATE!!!

I just got a phone call from Whirlpool and they have agreed to buy not only the one unit but the matching unit as well (which is what we demanded). These are two stand alone units, one fridge and one freezer that fit together as a set. Since they didn't replace the fridge we replaced with a single stand alone fridge/freezer and I no longer have any use for the stand alone freezer. So they are going to pay me what I paid for them at Lowes in 2006.

So folks, it pays to fight for what's right! YAHOO!!!!!

I don't know what caused Whirlpool to change their mind. I am curious what finally did it but they didn't say and I'm not asking. I will be happy when the check is in my bank account. Thanks everybody for your support!
