Which tickets to buy from UT to upgrade to AP?

Refresh me again, which promo tickets do we NOT get to upgrade to APs? As in, the extra free park or extra free days? I'm trying to get the max value towards the APs because I need to buy 5 of them, so the savings will add up. We are getting 1 3 park Preferred (for the parking) and 4 3 park Power passes (possibly even seasonal APs). We are going end of January.

You want tickets that aren't promos offered by Universal - usually, those promo tickets will have specific expiration dates. The promo tickets often use the word PROMO in the description too. The typical UT tickets are good for 1 year and will say that clearly before purchase. I've yet to see a promo ticket that doesn't list a specific expiration date.

Note that you CAN upgrade the promo tickets also, they just don't have the inflated value towards the upgrade - they will be credited at Universal's official price for that specific promo.

Agree I would stay away from the 3rd park free promos because they are Universal Promos also. If you are upgrading to 3 park AP's, I would just go with the UT ticket that saves you the most off the gate price, which looks to be the 5 day park to park with VB included. The one preferred AP will also get you food and merchandise discounts.

Look at the comparable ticket on the Universal website. The one with the biggest price difference will be your winner. However, like everyone has said above, check to see if the identical promo ticket exists on the Universal website because that is the price you will be given.
