We have already booked on a tour in the morning but would like to head to a beach in the afternoon. any ideas - somewhere close to the ship but enough for maybe a bit of snorkelling too?
We took a cab to Carambola Beach Club for $4/pp each way. There is excellent snorkeling right off the beach - just go in off to your far right where the rocks are sticking up out of the water.

Yes, that's exactly what we did. We had a relaxing morning on the the ship, got off around 11, spent 1.5-2hrs snorkeling, and I want to say we were back onboard by 2. (Since this itinerary is so port intensive, I made a point to plan several half day excursions to avoid burn-out and to give the kids plenty of time to do ship activities.)
While we had a great time doing this, you'll want to decide if you're up for it after already taking a tour in the morning. It can definitely be a game day decision though.
Also, I want to say that the cab ride was about 10min each way.
Thanks! I appreciate your insight. We might go straight after and relax on the beach. 10 minutes doesn't seem too far away. We just want to see if we can snorkel a bit and enjoy the St Kitts beach but don't want it to be too taxing and stressful to get back to the ship so we don't get LEFT BEHIND!! LOL
