Decided to take a trip next April - it will be our first staying DVC as owners :goodvibes. We are a family of four. We invited my parents to join us, and decided we would get a 2 bedroom if they said yes. Well they said yes....maybe :confused3. They say it is too early for them to decide. Well my 11 month window is now open and since the trip will be 2 days after Easter Sunday I would like to make the reservation now.

I think I will just book the 2 bedroom and if they come great - if not I guess we will just have loads of space? We are only taking one trip per year, so I don't think I would want points to go into holding.

Is a 2 bedroom too big for 2 adults and 2 kids under 10? If I book a 1 bedroom and they decide to come, would I actually be able to change to a 2 bedroom? Does anyone have any suggestions for what my best option might be?

We have traveled with both our 2 kids under 10 and now 3 kids under 10....the 2 bdrm always works out best! When we stayed in the 1 bdrm it worked too, but it meant there was not much space to relax after the kids went to bed.

Is a 2 bedroom too big for 2 adults and 2 kids???? That is the only way we prefer to book for that number of people. If you are staying at OKW, it might be too big if your children are really young, but if you are at any other DVC resort, a 2 bedroom will NOT be too BIG. It might be too small though with Grandma and Grandpa along. OKW would give you the best "bang for the buck" there too. Less points...mores space...win, win...!

Your points only go into holding if you cancel a booking 1 to 30 days before check-in. I would hope your parents will be able to tell you for sure by that date. The other thing to consider, though, is your use year. If you book the two bedroom then have to cancel and go with a one bedroom, make sure you'll still be within your banking period. (The banking deadline is the last day of the 8th month of your use year.)

You could use a two bedroom just for the 4 of you, but wow, what a use of points!

I think if it was me, I'd book the 1 bedroom. If mom and dad decide they want to come at a later time, you can check the availability of changing to a larger room or getting them their own studio. If nothing's available, sorry to say but it would be their own fault. Be sure to tell them that's what your plan is. Maybe it will help them make up their mind sooner.

Our first trip was to OKW in a two bedroom villa. The three of us (our son was 5 at the time) and my husband's parents. They loved having the second bedroom to themselves. Our son wasn't so keen on sleeping alone in the living room, so Bill and I swapped out sleeping on the sleeper sofa and letting our son sleep with the other parent in the master bedroom.

We did a one bedroom for four of us once and we were crowded. We waitlisted a two bedroom and it never came through. So while it wasn't horrible, it wasn't as nice as it could have been.

Enjoy the two bedrooms. It might be hard to change to a two bedroom from a one bedroom as you get closer to your stay. Especially as you get towards the 7 month time frame. Tell mom and dad you'll need to know soon if they will be joining you.

Thanks so much for all of your advice - I think I 'll get the 2 bedroom, and if they decide not to come I can try to change it then.

My first DVC trip was a 2 bedroom with 3 friends (total 4 women). We were 2 to a bedroom so no one was on the couch.

Personally I'd go with a 1BR and a studio. It is much easier to cancel one room than to try to change room type, especially during a busy season.

There is a danger in booking a 2 bedroom for the 4 of you....you'll love the extra room and won't go back to a 1 bedroom :rotfl2:

You beat me to it! That's exactly what I was going to post. You'll never want to go back!

I was thinking the same thing as backyard! A one bedroom for your fam & a studio for the folks. If you're gonna cook there's plenty of room for all six to eat in a 1 bedroom & you can always get an extra key for the folks to get into the one bedroom for snacks or drinks, etc. AND it's less points (usually) and if you need to cancel one room, there's enough space, but not too much in a 1bedroom

This is exactly what I was going to say. Much easier to cancel a studio if the grandparents don't come. OR, just get the 2BR and enjoy it for yourselves if they cancel. You will be very spoiled by all the space!

Could the op book a 2br lockoff and then cancel out the studio portion if parents do not join them and be left with the one br?:confused3

A 2 bedroom lock off is still a 2 bedroom. You would only be able to cancel the studio portion by cancelling the 2 bedroom and then book a 1 bedroom.

And if anyone was on a waitlist for either a 1 bedroom or a 2 bedroom for her dates, she'd lose it.

I think that's the case provided the lock off 2 bedroom doesn't remain a "lock off 2 bedroom for booking purposes. That's also a possibility.
