which side of ship to see castaway cay?

It depends on whether the ship docks bow or stern first. Most of the promotional photos you see has the ship docked bow first (which would make the port side of the ship, the side facing the island). But nearly all the time the ship actually docks stern first - which makes it easier for the captain to leave the dock (when that happens, the starboard side faces the island).

You can see it from both sides, but the family beach area and such is on the starboard side if the ship backs in (which it seems to try and do most times) or port side if you pull in. We were port and backed in and still enjoyed the view very much. You get to see all the docking activities and watch everyone from above on your verandah. Also can see some of the uninhabited side of the island and great view of the sea.

When we were docking there, we were looking off the front port side and watching the guys bring her in. (We went in "aft first"). They told us what they were doing while they were doing it, very nice guys. They said that if the weather/seas are rough, they have to take her in bow first. If the seas are calm, they prefer to go in aft first so that they can just take off out of the harbor when they sail away, so really depends on the weather more than anything.

All three cruises we have docked with portside facing the CC.

I would not recommend though picking your room based on whether or not you want to face CC when sitting on your verandah ... since there's no guarantee which way the captain will pull in until you actually get there, you could end up very disappointed.

We have been lucky on each cruise our verandah was facing CC and we have has a stateroom on each side. Go figure...

My first cruise I had a Cat 7 on the starboard side and it was a wondrous site to wake up to the view of Castaway Cay. I never expected it and, from what I have heard on this thread, I won't expect it again. I would just be pleasantly surprised, again.

If nothing else, you can go to breakfast at Topsiders and sit outdoors or take your morning coffee to the bow. :earsgirl:
