Here I go again. ;) Need to know what parts of the country have a mid winter break the week of 2/15/04?

I'm especially curious about the NYC area. (We are thinking about going for a few nights to the Catskills (Belleayre Mountain). But I think it will be hard to find accommodations if schools in NYC are off that week.

TIA!

Not NYC--but that is Massachusett's February School Vacation week.

We will be in Sunny Bonita Springs!! :hyper: :hyper:

FL schools do NOT have off that week. They have off 3/22-26.

All New York City public schools are closed that week. Not sure about the rest of the state

Mid winter break? I have never heard of that. Doesn't make sense to me. Seems like the kids are just getting back into the swing of things and they are off school again. Do the kids that have these mid winter breaks also have a spring break?

Yep. It's crazy. They just had over 2 weeks off for Christmas. Then they have a 4 day weekend in Jan. A week off in February, and then another week in April. Ahhh, to be a teacher in my area. Must be nice.

DS's school has 13 & 16th off.

Yes, we may get a week off in February and a week off in April, but the year doesn't end until late June. I think this year's school year in Syracuse goes from 9/3 to 6/24?

Someone on the boards once said that the reason for the break started back in the 1970's with the energy crisis. I don't know if this is true, but it would explain why it's only done in the Northeast.

So, if NYC schools are closed, sounds like there will be long lift lines. :(

and then we have a week off in april...and then sometimes we dont' get out until the middle of almost the last of June........to me this is a long time

The week of Feb. 15th is our vacation week here in RI. I think that applies to most, if not all, of the RI public schools.

Probably all of the Long Island Ny schools because I cant find a flight out to anywhere sunny and warm from Long Island Macarthur Airport and the prices for delta and american are unreal.

Schools in Maine are closed February 16-20, (winter break), and April 19-23, (spring break).

Ahhh, to be a teacher in my area. Must be nice.

perhaps you meant student instead of teacher?

When the schools take off more during the yr the summer break is shorter. This makes it near impossible for the teachers to take a summer job, since they work further into the summer than the kids and they return earlier than the kids. I believe in many districts the teachers end up with only 4 weeks off in summer. Most teachers I know use the summer to take the classes they need to remain certified. So it ends up that their breaks during the yr are their only breaks, which BTW, there are many teachers work days during student breaks too.

One of our best friends is a teacher, and we have quite a few neighbors who are teachers (city schools and suburban school districts). They get these weeks off along with the kids (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Feb and April break). As far as I know it has no effect on their summer time off. Our friend teaches summer school for the extra money. One neighbor who is a gym teacher/football coach works as principal for a summer school program. Another neighbor takes the summer off.

Yes, teachers work hard and deserve good pay, but I have to admit that the time off, along with pension and benefits, I don't cry too hard for them. ;)

Our schools are off the week of 2/16/04 and from 4/4/04-4/13/04 . We get off for President's week.. and for the Passover and Easter in April.

Each school district is different here.

My DD has the 16th and 17th off. And a spring break in April. One town over has the whole week off and a week off in April. It just depends on the school district.

Here in NW Ohio we don't have a mid-winter break. The kids are off this Friday but it's a teacher work day for the end of the semester. We all have Monday off for MLK day. Then our next day off is 2/16 for President's Day, then Spring break starts April 3 this year.
I don't mind because our last day this year is June 3 or 4. A friend of mine taught in Plymouth, Mass. for a year and he taught until about June 22!! Yuk!
I am very blessed to be a teacher. I get most time off with my kids (although I live in a different district and last year we had different spring breaks!) and since I am in HS I am home before my two younger ones. I have a permanent certificate (no longer available, I was in one of the last years to get one) so I don't have to take classes ever again if I don't want to, so I don't do anything in the summer except drive my kids all over town for their stuff and read and plan for the next year when August rolls around. We have good retirement, although they cut spousal health care so DH is up a creek in 18 years unless he gets a job with benefits! And every year is different. All in all I'm happy it's the path I chose. The only downside is I'm always in WDW at peak times!;)
