wife and I own 230 points direct at riviera and have been trying to buy boardwalk resale but not sure that’s ever going to happen. Seeing how easy buying direct was and tired of playing this waiting game about ready to just buy around 150-200 points direct somewhere else for sleep around points.
we will be 70 years old when the 2042 resorts expire and still have our riv points so buying a 2042 is fine. Since Saratoga, old key,and animal kingdom got raised to $200 point curious as to what everyone’s suggesting would be now for buying direct for sleep around points. Hilton head is tempting even with higher dues would it still be worth it seeing as how much cheaper Hilton head would cost for only 20 years of higher dues? we travel by ourselves and don’t have set weeks to vacation so flexible on booking. Thanks for any input.

I personally would not buy HH or VB for sleep around at WDW unless you want to stay there with those points. If it were me, I might add VGF or RIV if going direct. Some have been buying AUL for sleep around and those may be a good choice too...but, again, its not at WDW which requires only 7 month bookings.

Plus, in 2042, when something like HH and VB would be expiring, you could sell what you are buying today and get back some of what you paid for it, making it potentially a better deal!

If you're going to buy direct, aren't VGF and RIV the cheapest direct right now? I'm not a member yet so I don't have access to the prices but seems that if you're going to buy direct, those 2 resorts are not only the cheapest but VGF has low dues and no resale restrictions.....

I would buy where I wanted to stay and if they are direct, you can use them wherever you want to. I realize you already know this, but that's what we do. VGF would be a nice addition to owning Riviera.

Didn’t know that they gave you points for sleeping around😂

LOL. So don't buy BW resale. Buy ANYTHING ELSE. Pick up a tasty resale CCV with some extra points. Buy a BLT with that awesome chart. Hell, buy Poly, which seems to be seldom ROFR. SAP shouldn't be direct!

HH is in a different state, and I wouldn't buy a timeshare out of Florida. Maybe your research is different than mine.

My mathematical SAP right now would be resale BLT or resale CCV.

Mathematically, Saratoga Springs, Poly and GFV are mathematically the best sleep-around points when buying re-sale. When buying direct, depending on the exact incentives in place for your purchase, GFV may be the best sleep-around points.

BUT -- Given the limited 7-month availability over the last 2 years, I would be very cautious with sleep-around expectations. You may have very very limited selection at 7 months. As things normalize post-Covid, it's possible that 7-month availability increases. But also possible we are looking at a new normal of very very limited 7-month availability. So I'd be cautious about buying points at a home resort that doesn't much interest you.

Sorry, I have seen this term a couple of times now--can someone tell me what sleep around points are? Do you use them to stay at a less than desirable location? Or as a back up to your waitlist?

When you travel is also a big factor in the viability of sleeping around.

Check the availability charts that some dedicated DVC people have created to get an idea of how easy or hard it will be for the types of rooms you like to book and when you like to travel!

Why would anyone buy Direct SAP?

To use at RIV and any future resorts one might want to stay at in the future.

While some use SAPs all over, some use that term to add to where they also own.

My SSR are sleep around so I can upgrade and add to my stays at VGF and RIV.

Yeah I guess I just don't consider "I really want to stay at RIV" to be SAP.

Truth be told, I've never really understood the premise of "sleep around points." Why buy points at a resort you really don't want to stay? Especially if the whole point of those points is to compete for 7-month availability at another resort. What am I missing here?

Solely to save money. If there was no home resort advantage, so that you could realistically get availability at any resort in any room type at 7 months... then why pay $160+ for resale at a monorail resort, when you can just pay $120 for SSR points and use them at the monorail resort.

And that's why SSR and OKW are the resorts with the most 7-month availability.

Not in the same sense as the way as other reasons, and for anyone not interested in RIV or future resorts, but down the road, they may end up being an good choice, especially now that the usual resorts are up in price.

That seems to run counter to the most often repeated piece of advice here on the DIS: Buy where you want to stay.

There are people though who really have no preference and if stuck at the place they own, they are fine with it. In those cases, it makes the best sense to buy the least expensive.

We bought SSR in 2017 for $72/pt for our 300 point contract. The goal was to use at 7 months to add to or upgrade to the 1 bedrooms at the resorts we booked at 11 months that were our favorite. It just made sense,

So, I book at 11 months using my RIV points..and my VGF points now…and then, at 7 months book anything still available with my SAP points to free back up the others for different trips!

So wouldn't it then make more sense to buy HH or VB for that use? Both are significantly cheaper and "spend" the same at the 7-month window.
