This will be my first stay in a moderate resort. Since there will be several family members going we want to be in the same resort and yet keep costs affordable for everyone.
We will need 4 rooms, and there will be 3 teenage girls in one room, my sister, her husband and my 12 year old niece in another, my son (21) and his girlfriend in the third, and my mother (73) and I in the 4th.
I like the FQ but Riverside seems smaller and maybe easier for everyone to get together. Any opinions

Hi,

POFQ is smaller then PORiverside. If my husband and I were to stay at a moderate again we would go with POFQ. Because it is smaller no matter what building you end up in it is not that bad of a walk to the main pool or the food court area or the bus stop. Also, it depends on what type of theming you like. POFQ is Mardi Grasi (sp?) and PORiverside think half Gone With the Wind and half Huck Fin. We do not care for "Old South" themeing therefore even though many people love PORiverside we would not stay there and would go with POFQ.

Another vote for French Quarter. It's smaller and has quick and easy access to everything, (bus stops, boat, food court, etc..) and has a really great pool. While waiting at the bus stop one morning, we realized we had forgotten to bring a camera. It took my husband a tad over five minutes to run to our room in bldg 5, grab the camera, and get back to the bus stop before our bus arrived. He was a little out of breath but happy the resort was small!

On the other hand, friends of ours stayed at Riverside and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's much larger but really beautiful. I don't think you can go wrong at either resort!

POFQ has around 1000 rooms. POR has around 2000 rooms. You may prefer POFQ but I found it the least interesting of the moderates. Still it is pretty and easy to get around. I found POR more enveloping in its theme and seems more like you have gone back in time. :) All of the modertaes are good though.

Definitely French Quarter!! It is our favorite moderate resort. We recommend that to anyone looking to stay at a moderate. I have also heard rumors that Riverside is in desperate need of refurnbishment. Here is a great map of FQ to give you a better look:

I prefer Riverside. The stroll to the food court in the morning for breakfast is a beautiful walk, even though its a bit longer than your walk would be at FQ.

I suggest checking out the resort pics at wdwinfo.com or wdwig.com to get a feel of which resort's atmosphere suits you better.

Have a great trip!

Thank you for replies, I see that I got the two resorts mixed up, the Riverside is the one with the Mansions and Alligatore Bayou and the FQ is the smaller one! I do like the idea of the Mansions, but it may not be the thing for all of our group. I definately need to do a bit more research before making a decision

We've stayed at both, and we love both, but we love Riverside just a little more!! Its just so lush and pretty, and both the mansions and bayou are nice. This last trip, we stayed in the bayou, bldg. 14, and it was so convenient to the bus and the foodcourt, etc. Also we had a trundle bed in our room, too. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. Have fun!!:D

We are looking forward to another trip to WDW Dec.2003 with our 4 children. The Riverside is where we have stayed two other times and enjoyed the walking paths, water ways, the ambiance is wonderful. Which ever you pick we be the right choice because you will be with your family! Enjoy!

We have reservations at POR and we are going to switch to POFQ. The only reason is the size.

We love POR but after reading about the bus stops (10 month old with a stroller) it will be easier. My BIL and DH want something quiet. Besides the resorts are so close you really have so many choices.

I don't think you can go wrong.

We've stayed at POR twice, once in AB and once in MB. I love them both. The walks really weren't that bad. I even kinda missed the walk when we stayed in Magnolia Terrace. The walk from our room in AB was about 8 mins to the food court, but it was soooo nice. Yes, POFQ is smaller. But keep in mind, there is no sit-down type restaurant there, just a food court. You have to go over to POR to Boatwrights if you want this type of meal.
We really can't come up with any negatives for these resorts. Have fun planning.

We stayed at PO Riverside and loved it. I had the wife, 16 year old daughter and 4 year old daughter. The morning walk to the food court was great, lovely river and birds. Just my 2 cents.

French Quarter!!! I would consider staying there in the future, but would not consider staying at POR again. I think it might be neat for the kids to walk those "citified" streets with the jazz music piped in.

Just a neat environment. The pool might be more interesting to the kids, too. I think it has a serpent slide.

The size of this resort seems more in line with your desire to keep everyone together.

POR or FQ....great question....and both resorts have there own personality.....we have been staying at both resorts for the past ten years or so....our true favorite is POR....although we still call it Dixie Landings.....many years ago we stayed at the FQ during the Christmas holidays....they had a special caroling program at 6:00 at night...with characters, Santa and helpers.....they all sang holiday songs, special hot chocolate and cookies for all....it was very special....I just feel that each resort does have a special personality....and after you stay at each one you seem to gravitate to the one that suits yours the best.....and I guess that is why we try others....but always seem to end up back at POR.....uh...Dixie Landings....but whatever choice you make you will be making the right choice....cause they are both great....as any Disney resort is!

Riverside! The walks were not that bad. From our room in Oak Manor it was less than 5 mins (we timed it) to the main building. Boatwright's is fabulous and the boat is very convenient. I also love that lush, deep south feeling. Both resorts are beautiful but my vote goes to POR!

Here's another Riverside lover!! Beautiful resort and soooo much to do for all ages.

Well, we never stayed at Riverside but we ADORED the French Quarter. And it is very compact.

It did bother me that the sitdown restaurant was all the way at Riverside. With a four-night stay, we could do without it, but for a longer stay it might have bothered me.

Port Orleans - RIVERSIDE is wonderful. Great food court, wonderful scenery, great pool (we don't mind at all no slide. We prefer it that way). My family prefers the ambiance of the Old South. But we have heard people raving about the slide, but complain about the FQ food court. Either one you can't do wrong. Enjoy your trip.
