DH surprised me with a trip to WDW for my Christmas gift. I leave 2/26!! Anyway, this trip is supposed to be all about me and practicing my photography. I'm still very much an amatuer and need lots of practice. :confused3 I only have a few days and EPCOT is always a must do for me, so I need to choose one other park. I cannot decide between MK or AK. So, if this were you, which park would you choose and why?

What a nice DH -- wanna trade?? ;)

Depends on what you would like to shoot and also what type of camera and lenses you've got to work with. MK and Epcot are my favorite parks (just for visiting)...but I may actually choose AK if I had to pick one to photograph. I love animals and visiting zoos, and the look of all the different continents seems like it lends itself to some good captures. That being said, it seems like a lens with some good zoom would also serve you better in AK than it would in the other parks because of the jungle treks, the safari, etc.

Good luck with whichever one you choose and if you need a second shooter, or someone to schlep your gear, just give me a shout!! :rotfl:

Nah, I think I'll keep him. ;) He knows what a rough year 08 was and for him to take time off work to play mr. mom is priceless to me. I wish he were going with me.

As for my camera, I have a canon XT with the kit lens and 75-300. I'm leaning towards AK for the exact reasons you listed, but cannot imagine going to WDW without a stop at MK. Oh what to do??

I am considering purchasing a new lens before my trip, but also have some things I'd like to do during my trip that I may use the $$$ for.

Thanks for your input!

How many are a "few" days?? Would you have time to spend one at MK AND one at AK?? I agree, I can't imagine a trip to WDW without going to the MK and honestly, if I only had one day and I really wanted to do AK, I would do half a day at each park just so I could fit MK in.

Good luck and have a great trip!

I only have 2 park days, no hopping, so one day at EPCOT and one other. If I can save up enough money, I'd like to add on the hopper option, but I'm also trying to stick to a budget that DH gave me to spend on the trip. I have one day to explore the resorts and until 3:00 on my final day at WDW to hit DTD to get my shopping addiction taken care of ;)

If it's a photography trip, I'd definitely do AK before MK, especially since I have a decent zoom lens. Although... on my next trip, my goal is to get good fireworks photos, so MK is a must-do b/c Illuminations isn't being done the week we're going. What kind of photos are you trying to get? We might be able to help more if we know more about your usual photography style...

wow awesome gift!!! ... EPCOT would be a must do for me too after that I would choose AK. I would try to add the hopper option if you can that way when AK closes you still have a few hours to hop over to MK. If you cant add the hopper option that would be a tough call. I would have to consider MK then just to maximise park time.

Ok, I have to admit, the fireworks photos scare me. LOL I would love to try them, but I think for the most part, I'm going to try to get some of the entertainment and things... just everything. Things that my family doesn't want to stand around and wait for me to shoot and then look at me trying to figure out why I'm shooting it. Alot of the wonderful photos on here have inspired me to look at WDW differently and I'd like to see what I can come up with. I'm just so torn between MK and AK though. Might just have to add another day ;) (I wish)

I believe that AK would be more fun to take time and shoot than MK. While there are many things to take shots of at MK, it is still the guest volume center and being the oldest has less theming (i.e. the little things) than the new parks.

EPCOT is my favorite for photography. The variety is so great there--interesting architecture, lots of opportunity to capture live performances, amazing detail. I took more pictures there than in any other park during my last trip. Choosing between MK and AK, I would go with AK. Again, I think there is more variety there.

Thanks for the input everyone! I think AK it is going to be. LOL until I get there and am drawn into MK ;)

MK is open longer then AK (unless it is an EMH night) This would allow for more time to take pics. Something to think about.

I know I could not go to WDW without going to the MK!! .

Along this line, I would go with the park hopper option.

Agreed, it's only..what...$50 to add a hopper? I would say if the trip is solely for photography but you still really want to go to MK, the hopper would be a good thing to spend a little extra money on so you can get the best of both.

I would add the park hopper option. Spend an entire day at EPCOT (from opening till closing) See everything twice and get some great night shots.

Then Do AK from opening till around closing (it closes around 5pm that time of year right?) Get the Safari in early, do the jungle walks, Nemo and Lion King Show. Take your time and walk around the base of the ToL, all that good stuff.

Then, jump over the MK and spend the night photograhing MK at night including WISHES. If you get there around 4 or 5ish, you'll have some nice light for day shots, then hit the indoor rides and set up the tripod around the park for night shots. Tomorrowland is fun to photograph at night and I already mentioned WISHES.

Take advantage of it while you can.

I'd ask yourself these questions:

What areas of photography do you admire from others and want to learn to do better yourself?

What lenses would you want to get to know better? Do you intend to use a wider lens or a more telephoto lens?

Those two questions should really help decide between the two parks, MK and AK. Of course both parks offer some overlapping photography opportunities, such as candids, architecture, landscapes, rides, etc. But MK tends to lend itself more to various set pieces, characters, and period looks while AK tends to offer more safari-style and internationally flavored shots as well as more fine immersive details. If I was shooting wide, I'd say MK might hold a slight edge over AK - though the two main 'villages' of Anandapur and Harambe offer some very cool wide angle building shots and townscapes - MK overall is custom-fit for lots of wide angle shots and scenics, as well as motion photography, dark ride photography, and notably better night photography opportunities (except on the rare late-evening AK nights).

If I was shooting with telephoto, I'd pick AK in a heartbeat. In fact, I'd feel a bit restricted in MK with telephoto - it doesn't have as many opportunities to zoom on subjects, and many structures wouldn't allow you to stand far enough back with something like your 70-300 to even get the shot. You can of course shoot alot of close detail stuff, like masks, light fixtures, and flora closeups...but otherwise MK is not a place for telephoto to really shine. AK, on the other hand, especially when it comes to the animal walks and safari ride, absolutely require a telephoto, and can offer stunning telephoto opportunities for very long lenses. Moreso, the park has more open space and longer views across lakes and down rivers to other areas of the parks, so even scenics and landscapes can be taken with something as unwide as a 70-300.

I feel AK is the most immersive of all of Disney's parks as far as the landscaping, architecture, 'aging' and weathering, foliage, costumes, and for sweating a myriad of the smallest details down to small stickers on light posts, props resting unseen by most under bridges and walls, grafitti, missing bricks, rusty staples or nails, etc. So for a detail-oriented photographer, it is fantastic. And also to someone who likes to take closeup detail shots in such as way that it doesn't look like a shot from a theme park, but an actual location in the world.

Of course, Epcot has much of that detail and international styling too - which is why it's always been a favorite of mine; but you're already going there, so no need to sell you on it!
