Which *ONE* lens should I take?

Hi everyone...I am taking my first trip to WDW this June. This is not so much a photography-based trip as it is a fun, family-based trip, but I would like to make the most of my DSLR. I was just wondering if there were one or two lenses that you would recommend that would give me a basic range of shot potential at WDW - I don't know if lugging my huge camera bag with 8 people, kiddos, etc around would be the smartest idea. So, that being said, I have a Canon T1i, with the kit 18-55mm plus a EF 50mm f/1.8 II. I don't mind purchasing something that is recommended for what I need...I was looking at EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS...but I really don't want to go more than $300 for this lens, preferably less. Thanks!

Truthfully, there is never a perfect lens anwser for everyone. I will be carrying 3 lenses on our next trip 50mm, 18-135 (my new walkaround:cool1:) and my 70-300. HTH

I'm taking my 18-55mm (walk around lens), 35mm (for shows and dark rides) and my new 55-300 mm (for AK mostly).

I tried walking around the park with the 50mm f/1.4 and couldn't do it.

If I had to have just one, I would take the 18-55 you have. My next lens will hopefully be the 18-135.

I'll be taking my Canon 24-70 F2.8 and 50mm 1.4, along with the 80-200 EF-S. But I was curious and did some checking and I see the Web site thelenspal is based near Orlando, about 25 miles away from where I'm staying at least. And a person could rent lenses for four days or so pretty inexpensively, especially since there would be no shipping.

Not sure if that would interest you, but it's a good short-term option.

If this were my first visit to WDW, I would bring a decent P & S to the parks and enjoy the trip. There is so much to see and do that worrying about a DSLR would be the last thing I would want to think about. If you so desire, bring your equipment and leave it in the room for a few days. You may find the urge to get a little more photo-crazy. We have visited so many times that I now set time aside just for photography. The DW allows me to go off on my own? Maybe she's just trying to get rid of me!!:rotfl2: There is only one first time so enjoy it!!

I just sold my 18-55 and got a 18-135 and love it. I find my pics are just as sharp as my nifty fifty. I just posted some in the canon photo sharing thread.

We went to the World about one month after purchasing our DSLR. We had two kit lens but ended up leaving the 18-55 on the whole trip. AK was the only time I regretted leaving the longer lens back at the resort.

A couple of days when it was really hot, we left the DSLR in the room and just brought the point and shoot in hubby's pocket.

Just an impossible conundrum.

My Canon 24-105L IS is probably my goto lens, but I don't think I could survive in Disney without my 50mm f1.4 for shooting indoors. And I'd miss my 17-40L as well. And my 70-200 .....

The 24-105L is definitely a workhorse for me, though. Probably 75 - 85 % of my shots are taken with that.

I think your 18-55 sounds perfect as long as it is fast. You want that low f stop for low light situations which happen often indoors. And there are lots of great shots indoors at WDW.

I would try to go with a lens with a good range, like a 28 - 110 or the like. However, I rented a lens for my last trip from borrowlenses.com and it was totally worth the investment. I paid $86 to rent the Nikkon 18 - 200 VRII lens for two weeks, and it seriously was the perfect lens. The range was just fantastic.

Since there is no way I could justify popping down $900 for a lens like that, I will totally be renting again.

the 18-55IS and 50mm 1.8 would cover a lot, the Canon 55-250IS is less than $200. A holster type bag can fit a camera and two lens so I would go with the 18-55IS and 50mm 1.8 - yes, that's more than one!
