Originally I thought that none could take the place of Cthulhu in my heart (those cute little tentacles!!), but Nyarlethotep's funny eyes and adorable little fins are winning me over.

They're literary references. Cthulhu and Nyarlethotep are creatures from H.P. Lovecraft's fiction. He was active in the 1920s and wrote tales of madness and horror; some critics consider his work a direct descendant of Poe's. His most famous stories are probably "Call of Cthulhu" and "At the Mountains of Madness." (My favorite is "The Dreams in the Witch-House.")
