My husband wants to get a movie channel. Keep in mind, my husband and I rarely watch anything on TV, except the news and I love getting involved in the forensic type shows. My daughter watches a lot of Disney and some MTV, my son normally just puts in a DVD to watch a movie we already own (honestly, he's more into video games). We rent movies maybe once a week or so.

My husband is thinking about adding a movie channel to our current cable. We don't even have the digital cable yet and feel with our TV's, it would really be a waste of money for us and we're definitely not interested in satellite (we just got cable Internet in our area and we won't consider changing our cable at this point). With that in mind, would you choose HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, or Starz if you could only choose one. Please also keep in mind that we aren't interested in the shows these various channels run like Sex in the City or the Soprano's. We probably wouldn't watch any of them anyway.

i need my HBO fix...gotta have my Sopranos...and Larry David is a hoot!

Jungle Josh

HBO. The movies are great and their series are far superior to anything I've seen on network TV, IMHO.

I called my cable company just this week to see if I could get a lower rate on my bill as I was considering dropping the showtime package.
Charter Cablevision is my service provider.. they offered me three months of ALL the movie stations for free! So I took them up on it.. We now get 5 HBO, 3-4 Cinemax, 6 showtime, 4 Starz, and a bunch of others.. I think it totalled up to over 25 movie channels........ so far we are liking Starz the best.

We used to have HBO package.. but tired of it .. miss Sex and the City and Oz tho.....

Sad thing is.. sometimes even with All gazillion of the channels available.. there is still "nothing to watch on tv" but we still keep flippin' those channels.

I choose HBO cause I am not really familiar with the others. But my husband is the movie person in our house. I like reality t.v. shows.

Thanks for responding everyone, you're opinions are really helping us to decide and I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

mamajoan, you say you like Starz the best so far. What is it that you like? Is it special shows that they have, or is it movies? We're mostly interested in movies and I highly doubt we'll watch any shows that continue each week like a soap.

Neither my husband or I have had any of these channels since we were young teens and the movies seemed to be newer releases. I looked at HBO's program guide last night and I seen movies like Pretty Woman and James and the Giant Peach. Movies I bought on VHS years ago. I was a little disappointed by that and that is why I asked for opinions here.

We only subscribe to HBO when the Sopranos are on and then we disconect it.

HBO. I think they have the best "made for cable" movies and mini-series (Band of Brothers, From the Earth to the Moon come immediately to mind).

Gotta have my HBO for "Six Feet Under" and "Sopranos". Other than that, I hardly ever watch it.

if you just want movies, you can't beat Starz. They have many more movies than the other ones. We have all of them, but if I had to pick one for just movies, it would be starz followed by HBO. We could lose showtime and cinemax and I don't think anyone would miss them.

The movie channel that I choose is Turner Classic Movies! :teeth:

None of the above listed for me ~ I'm an HGTV gal, all the way! ::yes::

another vote for Starz here right now! DH is a big t.v./movie buff and we both seem to enjoy the movie selection on Starz the most... best selection. If you want to watch a LOT of movies, then maybe HBO is a good one too. HBO may have a better number of selections; however, I feel Starz has better actual choices. Starz tends to play one or two particular headliner movies several times during that month's cycle... which if you are an occasional watcher would be good b/c you don't have to try to hard to schedule watching a good movie into your plans; however, if you like to watch movies every night, you may find the same 2-3 movies on a lot. Hope that makes sense!!!

We have On-Demand now, and subscribe to all the premium channels. We use Starz the most... I LOVE ON-DEMAND!!! It's the best! We've been watching Pirates of The Caribbean several times as well as Freaky Friday (for my kids) -- they love being able to stop the movie and start it anytime we want -- just like a video!

HBO, but not because of the movies. Because of the original series they offer. I *LOVE* "Six Feet Under" and we often watch "The Sopranos."

Its Showtime for me 'cuz I can't live without Queer As Folk!
