Which is safer regarding luggage?

I think people don't routinely lock bags anymore due to airport security regulations.

They however would NOT put the bag w/ our extra camera lens in there even though the lens cost as much as the laptop. I was more worried about it getting dropped than stolen, but it was packed and all was well.

We just tell them the bag contains "electronics" and they've been happy to put it in the special room. Just put the lenses in that bag (bag in a bag?).
