OUr family is picking our ADR's for next trip. We haven't been to any of the dinner shows in all our trips. Our kids will be 9 and 5 by travel time. Which is better food and more fun Hopp Dee Doo or Spirit of ALoha. We do love the Poly and it's our favorite hotel but somehow we always ship the Lua. We may stay at Poly or WL not 100% sure yet. Thanks in advance.

We did enjoy both but liked HDDR a lot more. The food was better. SOA seating is outside and DH hates eating outside! Needless to say I didn't mention this to him until we were already there! :rotfl:

Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue Pioneer Hall - Fort Wilderness

We like the HDD better. The food is OK at both - but our DS likes ribs, so HDD wins out for him. I know at the HDD you can pre-order pizza, chicken fingers and or mac & cheese for your kids with 48 hour notice to the HDD dining. I am not sure of the Lua's policies. The dessert is strawberry short cake at the HDD, very nice - again you can pre-order ice cream for your kids, if you do not think they will eat stawberry shortcake.

Do the 5 PM HDD show with kids of your ages. You will be eating by 6 PM.
If you arrive early, you can take your kids shopping at the little shops outside the HDD for frontier / indian/disney themed items.

You can take a boat from the CR or MK to the HDD. The HDD building is very close to the marina.

At the HDD they annouce birthdays and anniversary.
The HDD is very funny for all ages - very slap stick.
We like to sit in the section closest to the stage - but all tables have a good view. You sit with your family- no one else.

More info from http://allears.net/din/hddcom.htm below:

Entertainment: While you enjoy an all you can eat dinner, you are entertained by good old fashion country western singers, dancers and comedians. Be prepared for slapstick, corny jokes and lots of singing and dancing.

Your meal, brought to your table includes:
Starters: Tossed salad, loaf of bread and honey butter

Feature Items:
Ma's Delicious Fried Chicken
Smoked Barbecued Pork Ribs
Mashed Potatoes
Country Style Baked Beans

Strawberry Shortcake

Included with the meal: Coca Cola, Diet Coke, Root Beer, Sprite, Orange, Pink Lemonade, Iced Tea, Apple Juice, Milk, Chocolate Milk, Hot Tea, Coffee, Draft Bud Light, Chardonnay, Rose, Sangria, and Merlot

Spirit of Aloha - Polynesian Luau

The Lua show at the Poly is more adult like. There is a fire breathing act and a story of a young island girl acted out in a dance.Anniversary couples get up to dance on stage. Birthday kids get up on stage and jump up and down. Some seats can have an obstucted view and you sit at a long table with other families - OHANA means family and so does the Lau.

Please consider HDD for your family.

Personally, we enjoy the HDDR much more than SOA. HDDR is much more interactive than SOA.

Additionally, we've never had bad seats at HDDR. Our seats at SOA have never been all that good.

For DH and I, the food at Spirit of Aloha was more to our liking. DH absolutely LOVED the salad dressing. I am a fruit person and loved the endless fresh pineapple. The ribs were good, chicken was pretty good, and the rice and vegetables were very good. It was simply a lighter fare. I will say that the strawberry shortcake at HDDR beats the chocolate volcano delight at SOA. Our waitress was very good and kept the beer coming to DH. We thought the dancing was really good and enjoyed the fire throwing.

HDDR was a highlight of our trip. SOA was a huge letdown and a low point of any Disney trip we hae ever done.

Prefer the food, service, and show at HDDR. I liked the theme of SOA, and I like eating outside so that was nice. But that was about it. I would never do SOA again. We are doing HDDR again in a few weeks, and bought tickets for our friends to join us. Can't wait!

We have done both and liked the HDDR better. The luau was nice but the HDDR was so much fun.

Thanks so much :goodvibes . Hopp Dee Doo it is! ithought the Lua would be fun since we have never been to one, but HDD sounds like more fun and better food.

I definitly like HDDR better. If it was up to me we would never to SOA ever again. I remember it being a good show when I was a kid, but when we took DD last year it was corny. And I didn't think the food was that good. DH on the other hand, really enjoyed it. We will only do one show from now on when we go so I will try to alternate each time. (We're doing HDDR this trip!)

DD was 4 on our last trip and she really enjoyed the HDDR adn had no problems staying awake. We went to the 7:15 show. But she fell asleep during the SOA show. In my lap. Which wasn't really all the comfortable for me. I woke her up for the fire part which she seemed to enoy but that was it. She wasn't really impressed with the show.

Glad you made your choice! I can't 'vote' as I've never been to the luau but HDDR was great. I was worred that my son in law would hate it but he actually enjoyed it...as did my granddaughter. The food was excellent and it's just a funny, laid back time.

I didn't know about pre ordering food for the kids - next time I'll have to remember that.

Hope you enjoy!

Barbara

hi, pooh2001, were you actually able to do that ,preorder food for the kids? I called as soon as I saw this because my kids will not eat anything they serve, but I was told they do not do this and I was not able to preorder anything different:confused3 Just curious if this was a confirmed thing? Thanks! We are going to the HDDR next week! I called wdw dine, maybe a different number?

For a family...Hoop Dee Do is by far the best option. If you want something for adults...then the Luau is awesome. They're both great meals and great shows, but the Hoop Dee Do is the best entertainment for a family to enjoy together.

We have enjoyed both, but for those who went to the Luau a few years ago, most will agree it was then a toss up between the two.

The new SOA has a kinda lame theme running behind it about a girl going home to her roots - not bad just kinda weak...

The older luau from about 5 years ago, only spotlighted the cultures of the dancers and islands and was actually educational...

If they brought back the older show, I think you would see the numbers much closer ...are you reading this Disney???

Yes this is confirmed. I have heard of hot dogs, mac n' cheese, and chicken fingers all being available for the kids (and I THINK pizza, too, but that is a foggier memory). If I remember correctly (and someone correct me if I am wrong) pretty much any entree from the Fort Wilderness' Trail's End Buffet restaurant can be brought in as an alternative for kids (or people who cannot eat the given meals for health reasons).

Thank you, Clotho! Maybe the CM I got just wasn't aware although she did seem like she was really trying to find the info. I will call and give it another try! Thanks, again!

We did the Spirit of Aloha this past trip with our 10 y/o DGS. The food was good, we had great seats and my DGS enjoyed it a lot. When I presented him with the options of the two months ago he rolled his eyes at me. I know SOA is put down here but DH and I are planning it again for our next trip. Hoop Di Doo seems to corny.
