Which Hotel? PP, DLH or GCH

Hey folks, veteran WDW visitor and APH but never been to DisneyLand. DW and I are just starting to make plans to visit DL next June with DD6 & DS12. Question is which on site hotel? We are DVC owners and are usually staying at BCV at WDW which is nice because of the location and easy access to EPCOT and MGM. So what do you guys think, which hotel would be best for us.All info on each as to likes and dislikes is appreciated. Thanks :teeth:

Here is my humble opinion. I've stayed in all three a few times each and I live about 35 minutes away. Husband and I visit DL often because of the discounts we get and because we have friends in from out of town often. I've only been to WDW once before.

GCH is the most expensive. DLH is second, PPH is third. GCH is closest to the parks, DLH second, PPH third. That said, the layout of DLR is so much smaller than WDW, all three are walking distance from either DCA and DL. PPH and GCH is closest to DCA. GCH has an entrance to DCA. PPH can sometimes use the secret passageway to DCA (this closes and opens seasonally, though.)

Pools: The best pool is the DLH. PPH has a giant waterslide and little theming, but they do have a nice pool bar. DLH is well-themed and is a lovely diversion. GCH's pool to me was just a standard 4-star hotel pool.

Rooms: Based on this alone, I'd pick the DLH. The grand's rooms are very nice and very posh but very small. PPH are less expensive, okay-sized, and nicely basically Disney themed. DLH are the best themed, and you might even get a view of DTD from your room.

Check-in: The worst check-in I had was at the Grand. Hours and hours of waiting for a room is not my idea of fun, even though you can easily walk to both parks. PPH and DLH both were able to check me in every time at check-in time.

Lobby: The GCH wins, hands down. Again, I've only seen the WL at WDW once before, but this is most like the WL at WDW, I think, as far as decor goes. They have a great lobby bar, The Hearthstone Lounge, that has great hot chocolate in the winter (they have a grown-up and a child version, too!)

Service: Hhhm. Hard to choose. I've never had concierge at any of the DLR hotels, but it seems that PPH was nicest to me, then DLH, then the Grand. It just seems that the GCH has staff doing so much to make everyone happy, that personal touches have escaped me. The PPH was awesome to me the three nights before my wedding: I was met the desk with a bouquet of balloons and autographed Fab 5 photo congratulating me. Sam at the Lobby bar is my kind of barkeep, too.

Kids: Kids (we don't have any but friends' do) Most kids always prefer the DLH because of the pool and the Pixie Dust and the theming. My niece is most uncomfortable at the GCH, and another's kids loved the water slide at the PPH.

So, which is my favorite? The Grand. If I were on a budget, I'd take the PPH in a heartbeat. If I needed a weekend of Disney Magic, I'd take the DLH.

Also, expedia.com and travelocity.com often have great deals on all three hotels, so check that before you buy a package. It seems to me that I can always beat ticket/hotel packages by buying the elements myself, but if you have to include a plane ticket, a lot of the airlines' packaged deals are a better buy.

Please, do let me know if you have any more questions. I've also stayed at a few off-site hotels (some are even closer to the gates than the PPH and the DLH.)

If you plan on doing laundry be aware that Paradise Pier doesn't have a laundry. We stayed there last year and didn't enjoy our stay. We are staying at the Anaheim Hilton this year.

Thanks to those who responded, especially Handbag Lady, now that was the kind of detail information that one can use to make a decision! We are looking forward to our trip out west, and we are planning on coming as soon as school lets out, which in NC will be June 8th. Staying for a week at least and maybe more. We are Disney Vacation Club owners so we will be using points for at least a portion of our stay in CA. Can anyone tell me what the crowds are like at Disneyland in June? Also any information on other points of interest to visit outside of Disneyland for a family with 2 kids ages 6 & 12 would be appreciated. thanks, ya'll are great! :goodvibes

Did you get a high city-view room? I hate those. I've never had to do laundry at the resorts, but friends have used the DLH and they like it much better than the GCH laundry.

I like the Anaheim Hilton (it's nice inside) but for me it's just too far from the park to walk and driving to the Mickey and Friends structure is just silly from there. You either have to make a near full loop around the property, or make that odd U-Turn at Ball.

The ART shuttles are nice, but they are $3 each way (or is that each day?), I think. Sometimes the driver forgets to stamp your pass, though. :rolleyes1

It starts to pack out in late June, early June not so much.

The various kids that I've had the pleasure of entertaining from out of town liked: Knott's Berry Farm, Universal Studios (feh to me but I'm not a kid), the tide pools near San Pedro, Catalina Island, Six Flags Magic Mountain (maybe not for the aged 6 child), just going to the beach, Venice Beach, and Hollywood. The grown-ups liked the aquarium in Long Beach. (It's not super huge and it has some fun parts like a touch-tank.).

How far away from Anaheim were you thinking in terms of site-seeing? Will you have a rental car for some part of the stay?

The ART Shuttle worked very well last year for us We had a car and kept it parked when we did DL. I am out the door now for DL. :)

At this time we are thinking of spending 2 weeks in California, probably 4 days for DL and CA and the rest exploring. I personally would love to visit the Redwood forest and maybe Sequoia national park, but I would also love to visit Alcatraz. So, yes we plan on renting a minvan and doing the tourist thing. The tallest trees we have in NC are oaks which, if they are really old may get 70 foot or so, can't imagine looking at trees you could ride cars thru.
Don't mean to sound like a hillbilly but how is traffic going thru those outskirts of LA and what is the best way to bypass any rough sections going North of DL to sightsee. Thanks. :teeth:

My first visit since the move was on the 6th of June- absolutely awesome. It was a Monday, and we walked right onto just about everything. It gets worse later in the month, though. Just look at the blackout dates for the SoCal AP's. Their pretty accurate at picking busy days!

Don't forget about SeaWorld and San Diego Zoo to the south!

Anyone visiting Alcatraz should pre-book. It is very difficult to get tickets!!! I am speaking from experience. If you are only there for a couple of days, book early so you are not disappointed. You can book online.

I would skirt the 405, 5, and 91 by using the 57 to get to the 210. If you look on a decent map of Southern Ca, you'll notice it links up with the 5 in the Northern part of Southern California (and yes, I give directions like a girl) .

I'm also told that us SoCallers call freeways strange names. Most people not from here call them Interstate 5 and Freeway 57 instead of the 57 and the 5. Maybe I need a translator!!!

It depends on the time of day and day you want to travel, too. Fridays are the worst, Thursdays and Sundays come in second.

And you don't sound like a hillbilly!

Here is the best kept L.A. Secret:

It's a great freeway map. Anyway, if you are taking the 101 North and not the 5 North, I'd still take the 210 to the 118. This way, you'll be able to see the gorgeos Santa Monica mountains as you take the 23 route to the 101.
