Interesting article. DD and I have been pondering a likely candidate to play Maleficent and I can imagine any of the article's suggestions being able to do her justice. I especially like the thought of Catherine Zeta Jones, hadn't even thought of her.

This is a very,very tough casting call. In my opinion Maleficent is the best villain Disney has ever created. Out of the 3 in the article I would personally have to choose Jolie. But I just can't see really anyone do her justice. I wonder if Elanor Audley (maleficent's voice)had a daughter. She would be interesting if she has her mother's traits.

Hmm. This is most disconcerting. I surfed around and read lots of articles about prospective directors, writers and casting. IMDB is showing a date of 2013. Other than that, I couldn't find anything truly definitive. I want something carved in stone or beak delivered by Diablo.

I don't see any of the actresses listed playing Maleficent. In my opinion, only Idina Menzel from Wicked could play her.

Well, if Tim Burton is directing, I think we all know who will play Maleficent.......

As for the others, I'd choose these, (although they are not Hollywood "A" listers by any stretch of the imagination...)

I think Helena Bonham Carter would be an excellent Maleficent. I think she's very gifted actress (though admittedly, I don't like *all* of her movies) especially when it comes to being evil. She's positively perfect as Bellatrix in HP. Plus she's got those uber high cheekbones and large eyes. . . I think it could work.

Gerard Butler could work as Gaston. I don't think they'd would have a snowball's chance in you know where getting him to do it, but that's a whole 'nother thread.

Uma Thurman for the Evil Queen- I know she's blonde, but I think she could do the transformation into Old Hag pretty well. Oooh, or Jennifer Conelly.

I've got nothing for Jafar. He'd be tough. I think Johnny Depp could pull it off, but I don't think he would ever consider it.

Did you see his turn as the host of SNL this past season? They did a Beauty and the Beast skit that was one of the highlights of the year (a low bar, but still, it was funny). It was on Hulu, check it out if you haven't seen it.

I love the idea of Michelle Pfeiffer as Maleficent! The only idea of my own I've got is Alan Rickman as Frollo-- they look kind of alike and Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd is pretty much the Victorian version of Frollo anyway

That's exactly who I was thinking. I think she even looks like Maleficent sans Maleficent make-up... but in a good and pretty way.

I like HBC, I love her as Bellatrix in HP as she's perfection in that role, and I really enjoyed her at the Red Queen in Alice but as Maleficent, I don't think I'd like it at all.

I'd love for Disney to make a live action Peter Pan. I love Captain Hook, but my choice has already played Captain Hook, in Universal/Columbia's 'Peter Pan' in 2003. But for the Disney version... Henry Cavill or Richard Armitage. I'd also love to see Tim Burton direct an adaptation of Peter Pan at some point.

Beauty and the Beast, Gaston: Benedict Cumberbatch

I'd also like to see Tom Hiddleston play a different Disney villain, but he is already Loki and The Great Escapo, so we probably won't see him in other Disney bad boy roles for a while.
