I have seen some of you talking about the ebook reader Kindle and was wondering if some of you could give me some suggestions on which one to get? My dd13 wants one but I don't know much about them. I have seen the Kindle and the Nook but she says there is one by Sony the has more options as far as the books you can get.

Any info would be appreciated

i actually like the nook because you can share books - and since it came out after the others it has more options -

There is a lot of information and mis-information out there.

The Nook is the newest ereader and the reviews have been rather negative.

Barnes and Noble has had to retract the advertising that states that you can loan books. Not all books can be loaned, but those that can be loaned can be loaned once and only once for a maximum of 14 days. You do not have access to the book while it is loaned,

There is also the Sony Readers. There are 3 different styles.

And there is the Kindle.

All three are rather proprietary and require you to buy new books from their particular book seller.

If you are interested in a ereader....I would suggest that you do your research.

I would also make a list of 5 or 10 books that you are interested in and price them via B&N, Sony and Amazon.

The most recent figures suggest that the best pricing is at Amazon....but again, you should do your research.

I personally chose the Kindle and have been quite happy with it.

I just wanted to say I soooo wish my 14 year old daughter read enough for pleasure that she would find a Kindle useful. She only reads because she has to for school. I have been a voracious reader my entire life and feel like she is really missing out.

Good luck with whatever you chose.

James wanted to get Madi a Kindle for Christmas. I said no. She LOVES to read. She is my child. However, she likes to read at school, and I don't know if I would be happy with her taking a Kindle to school. And, something that James can do is hop between books. Madi and I tend to be the type to read all of a story before you start a new one.

For you Apple fans it is pretty much definite now that Apple will be introducing a tablet that will also serve as an eReader at an event that is now confirmed for the end of January. Kevin Rose, who is is pretty accurate when dealing with Apple rumor/fact, let some info out on this week's episode of TWiT if anyone is interested.

I would definitely wait until you see Apple's announcement on their new tablet device before making an eBook reader purchase today. At least see what they are coming up with and how it might affect, or not, the competition.

I just posted in another thread that I have become an "all Apple" kinda guy.

In this instance...I'm not. When I sit to read, I dont want to be distracted.

I dont want my reading to device to ring, beep, light up, play music or movies etc.

I want it to be a reading device.

From what I've heard...the new Apple announcement is for a tablet style PC on which you "can" read. It's not going to be a dedicated reading device. The description I keep hear is "think big Touch".

I'm pretty happy with what my Kindle does....just as I'm happy with what my iMac and iPhone do.

My 14 yr old daughter got a Kindle from her grandma for christmas. I didn't think i'd like it that much. Not only did i like it, i LOVED it! I ordered one for myself today. I did look at the Sony ereader and the Nook but felt they were not as easy to navigate and the Nook seemed to be slower than the Kindle. The salesman at Barnes & Noble was emphasizing the free book thing with the Nook but we have found lots of free books for the Kindle too. Plus, the Kindle has an internet browser. This is a nice feature. I can't wait til my Kindle comes in!! :cool1:

Kevin, I'm looking at the Kindles on Amazon, and there are two models. I saw yours at the podcast recording. You have the smaller one, correct?

I have the Kindle 2 ...which is now known as the International version (as it works almost everywhere in the world now).

The larger version is the Kindle DX. It's about the sive of an average magazine. I bought it when it first came out, but returned it as it was just too big. Now, that's just my opinion. Lots of people own and love the DX.

Hope that helps.

I have the kindle 2 also. I bought it after the dx came out and was debating between the two. I thought the dx was larger than i wanted because I tend to take books out with me, like appts for the kids or while waiting for them at activites. I even cut up paper to the size of both of them to see which would fit in my pocketbook. I love having the kindle 2.

I bought my husband a Kindle for Christmas, primarily because it has basic web access. I also liked the freedom of being able to wirelessly download books from anywhere there is Sprint 3G coverage. With the Kindle, you are not limited to just the Amazon store for purchase of titles. FictionWise and Mobipocket (among others) are both websites that have Kindle-friendly titles for sale. If you are buying for a 13yo, however, you might want to consider the Sony since it is compatible with downloading ebooks from your local library (if they participate with Overdrive Media). Might save you some green! I've taken to doing this with audiobooks on my ipod so I can drown out the loud co-worker on the other side of the wall. Haven't spent a penny!

No, I like your size. I thought the DX looked big. I like the smaller version - it looks more portable.

I have had the K2 since end of Oct and I love it :lovestruc

I almost waited for the Nook but now I'm glad I didn't! Hop on over to the B&N forum to read all the frustrations with this ereader. I'm sure there will be updates to take care of the problems but I wouldn't want to get one now.

As for the apple tablet... I have an i-touch which I love and will be one of the first in line if the i-phone is ever released for Verizon but I wanted an the device to be an e-reader. The ereaders have an eink screens to simulate reading a book and are not backlit so no eye strain.

In terms of pricing with the types of books I read currently they have all been cheaper (some times considerably some times a buck or two) through Amazon.

Check out kindleboards.com for more info :goodvibes

OK, I have a silly Kindle question. It says it's 3G and you can download anywhere. Can you access email and other things on the web?

Sort of. It's a basic web browser - very basic. I can access my work email on it - but it's not pretty. You can read news sites, google, but nothing fancy. It's a handy feature to have access to.

Agreed... in fact the rumor is it will be the iSLATE.

Although I've been hearing for a year and a half this puppy was coming out at the next apple press conf, but this time it feels real.

The question will be JUST how much it is... I have seen estimates from $300 to $1000 with $5 to 700 the sweet sport estimate. I'm hoping closer to $500 or lower myself.

This is Apple. From my understanding, they have been working on this for several years and Jobs wanted it perfect. I also have seen rumors that E-books are the next BIG entry to the itunes store. All I'm saying is I wouldn't count apple out from being able to create a backlit device that doesn't strain the eye, Heck, the kindle app does a pretty good job of it right now.

To me, color screen has always been more important than the E-ink pads. Given their innovative past, I recommend ANYONE looking to buy a reader to hold off until the iSlate announcement to see just what Apple has in store.
