We are considering a cruise in Sept. The information can be very overwhelming. We want an oceanview but how do we choose a deck to be on. We have never cruised before so we don't know if we will get sick(will be prepared with meds though). My DH fishes on the ocean a lot and never gets sick but I wouldn't be surprised if I did. I know they say to try to get a room in the middle of the ship but what deck would you recommend?

We have cruised 4x's and have always been on deck 2 in 2801 and 2814. We cruise in August and have skirted a hurricane and been in a tropical storm leaving St. Thomas where they tied the deck chairs and anything loose down. I cannot even go on a swing without getting sick. The movement, in my opinion always seemed to be more the higher I went on deck. On deck 2, where we were there was movement, but not enough to bother me when the seas were high and hardly any when calm. This is just my opinion but if I were you for my first cruise I would stay on deck 2. Although the only time we were really in our room was to sleep, too much to do, and everthing is 3rd deck and above so you will be on the higher decks anyway.

Thanks for the help. All of the cruise information is so overwhelming! I jsut don't want to regret any choices I make and I want to enjoy every aspect of the cruise!

Typically the lower decks have less movement. We have sailed DCL 10 times and stayed on many different decks. Decks 1 and 2 are our favorite.....just a note.....Deck 2 (Cat 9) window cabins have one very large porthole where window cabins on Deck 1 have 2 small portholes.

There are no cabins on decks 3 or 4, so if you didn't book a room on 1 or 2, Deck 5 would be your next option which is also a very nice deck!!!!

Pretty standard in cruising that the least motion is felt in the lowest decks, center of ship. BUT, you have to realize that 18 hours of the day you aren't going to be in you cabin! You will be up top, forward and aft. You will feel motion if the seas are rough, so your best bet is meds. Talk to your doc about which ones will be best for you and try them out before you go. You don't want any adverse reactions to ruin your vacation.

If you are feeling queezy up top, try standing at a rail and looking at the horizon. This should tell your brain that you aren't moving and it may help.

If you are worried about the movement in a cabin, I would suggest an inside cabin, expecially if you are low in the ship. If you have a porthole of window, you can many times see the ships roll as the water comes up closer to the window and then down again. This may add to the nausea. I've been in porthole cabins when the ship is rolling where you can see only sky out of the window and then a few seconds later, only water. If you think that may make you sick, go inside cabin.

I know most people find that the lower you are, the less movement you feel. For someone like myself (I have terrible stomach problems), decks don't make much of a difference.

One hint if you suffer from motion sickness (a trick my Dad, a navy sailor taught me) is to start taking bonnie (or some anti-seasickness med) a couple of days BEFORE you actually get on the ship.

I forgot to do this on the first cruise and paid dearly for it (Christmas cruise, huge waves, and the waiter kept telling me "Don't look at the christmas trees" that was swaying on the ship as if caught in a hurricane... yeah right!)

On our second cruise, I took bonnie the three days before the cruise, and I was much better. Also, the first night generally seems to be the worse (on the Eastern) as you are accomodating yourself to a moving ship AND going through the gulf stream! So don't get overly discouraged if you do feel a little queasy the first night, it normally gets better!

Hope this helps

Get your doctor or dentist to write you a srcipt for Transderm Scop patches and you wil have no problems on the ship no matter where you are. They are very safe, and a box of 4 are not too expensive.

Happy sailing

Not deck 8- sometimes you can hear the chairs being moved on deck 9 very early by CMs. We prefer decks 6 or 7 with cabins above and below . However I could not pass up deck 5 this time because of a secret porthole and I like the fact that I will be closer to the kids labs.
