We have 2 basic cards- a visa and mastercard- but neither have car rental insurance- I know that many do- getting a new card may be a better bet than paying insurance to the rental agency?
What kind of coverage do we need?

Any advice?

TIA, Jen

Check with your auto insurance co. to see if you have coverage if you rent a car. I did this in Aug. and found out I had the same coverage I had on my own car was extended to a rental plus I used my Am ex. which would cover my deductable if it was needed. To find out how much ins. is from a car rental co. you can get a price online and click on the ins. to have it added in. Linda :)

After looking at many different cards I found a cibc platinum visa that includes car rental insurance- thanks, Jen

My Diner's Club included Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) insurance but I still ended up purchasing third party liability insurance when I rented in the US.

Definitely check your auto insurance and your home insurance as well. Both may cover your rental car. Ours did this past September and it didn't cost us any extra. Some policies will but it's always less than the gouge from the rental car agencies.

Allot of people don't know that most credit cards...if not all, only have collision. You could be in major situation in the US without Liability.

Get the rider from your insurance company, it is only about $30 and worth it.
