.. it looks like I am going to have to buy another computer.

My current PC is an Evesham, 3 years old and behaving considerably older!
I won't go into all the problems - it still has loads of disk space - but is about to give up the ghost yet again, so replacement is needed!

I sort of know what specs I need but I would like company recommendations - reliability, aftersales customer relations etc.

Thanks for any feedback you can share :)

Personally I like Dell - they have a good variety and they always have good offers eg - free delivery, double memory etc!!! :D

...another thumbs up for DELL here too!

Needed to upgrade and took advice and went for the Dell - no problems and very happy (even have a DELL laptop from work which has never let me down).

i was looking into a new puter recently and heard lots of good things about dell....in the end i got a new car instead !! but i am certain dell would have got my buisness lol

as someone who deals with dell regularly via his job i cant recommend them enough.

DELL are usually very reliable machines. We use nothing but DELL PCs at work and we also supply them to our customers for running our software.

DELL's after sales support for home users can be a bit lacking - but I think that's the case with most of the major PC suppliers.

I recently got a PC made to order from a local computer shop. This can work out cheaper, plus you get exactly the spcification of PC you want. Support is also local if you have any problems. The only risk is that the local shop will go bust or something :)

This is interesting! I didn't expect Dell to get such a high rating! (I remember your new Dell having to have a new hard-drive Tim - can happen whichever company you buy from, but they were okay about changing it I think?)

Once they accepted that it was the hard drive at fault they sent an engineer out within a few days to replace it. It did take a few weeks before that with DELL getting me to try all sorts of software fixes and diagnostics first.

I worked for Compaq (now HP) and I now work for Microsoft.

I also would say that Dell is good option, Compaq/HP are also very good but probably a little more expensive. Dell let themselves down with their support, but if you shout loud enough you should be ok.

wierd i've never had a problem with dell support. maybe thats because i deal with the business side of things.

best way to handle it is just get the name and contact details of who ever takes your order or deals with your support call and just keep contacting them directly.

Hi Mark :) !

Having had to do this for the past three years, I was hoping to avoid it :teeth: After the last 3 hour long phone call and ending up with the computer having more problems rather than less, I decided that no way was I going to do that any more.

(Tim, our first PC was made to order from a local computer company many moons ago, and it is still working! But the company have long gone. However, it has a tiny tiny memory and capacity, but it has proved far more reliable than this one!)

DELL support for business clients is very good. We buy a hell of a lot of DELL hardware (we even have our own private page within the DELL website!), and they give us great service.

Dell seem to have a reasonable reputation.
But I would say don't buy one until there are offers on. These seem to come up every two or three weeks. Check the "quick, buy it while you can" thread on the Money Saving Expert forums as regularly as you can, the offers are posted there first. Last one I saw was a Celeron 2.6 with 512Mb ram for £158 with free delivery.

Shirley I am in the same boat as you...my puter is very poorly :)

I have been looking at Dell. They seem to have a few deals on at the moment.

Good Luck choosing.

The IT company I work for used Dell as a supplier for a couple of years but ditched them and went back to Compaq/HP as they were more reliable. I have a HP Pavilion that I got through our company scheme back in April - and am really really pleased with it. DS has one that was built by a local shop - and that is good too - but was a lot cheaper than mine - and it shows, to be honest.

.............. :earseek: this has to be a typo??????

Okay - I'm looking at the invoice for this one bought 3 years ago - £1,330.77 in total. Basically, £1,000 of that is the Axis 1400WK with Athlon processor 1.4Ghz , has 256mb.

Michelle, let me know what happens - good luck with your search too :)
