Which beach would you go to? Staying in Anaheim. Not planning on swimming. Just seeing the Pacific and whatever else there is to see (boardwalk or something?) No car. Will have to take taxi.

I love this beach there is great little pier with a restaruant at the end. I always have great time at that beach plus they always have little shops to poke you head in and look around.

Another vote for Huntington! Its our family tradition to go there ever trip to DLR, and we LOVE it! Theres so much to do, its very clean, and the pier is very neat! :thumbsup2

Another vote for Huntington!! I find Newport to be a bit stuffy for myself personally. Walk down the pier and have lunch at Ruby's and your day will be great :thumbsup2

My first choice would be Huntington too. Great pier, shops, lots of things to watch. Huge volleyball setups, surfers, and so on. Do you know what a Hollister apparel store is? Do you have one by you? If so, then I believe all of their stores have a live cam set up on both sides of the store, of Huntington. You could go see what it is like! :cool1:
Go to one of the walk up snack places and order some "Strips and Cheese." This was my first introduction as a teen to nachos and salsa. LOL....that was many years ago.
Another great place to eat is at the Sugar Shack. Or Ruby's at the end of the pier.

Newport is great too. It's really nice to walk along the Strand, (Concrete boardwalk) and oggle at all of the beautiful beach houses that are right on the beach. At the beginning of the pier, they sell fresh fish. Great place to eat is Charlie's Chili. Or once again, look for some strips and cheese. If you keep walking south on the Strand, it will take you to Balboa Island and harbor. Neat little area.

My DH's favorite thing to do, while there, is watch all of the exotic cars along the Pacific Coast Highway, (PCH.) So if anyone in your family likes that kind of thing, they will be in heaven.

Have fun!

HB native here throwing my hat in the ring. Newport is more a place to live than a beach. HB is a beach first. There is far more character and local flavor in HB. The access to the beaches is more friendly as well.

Charlie's Chili is FANTASTIC. Not the best chili I've eaten, but still a great place for breakfast. It's a must do every time DBF comes to visit :thumbsup2

So is strips and cheese the same thing as nachos (chips and cheese)? I live in TN. Are the restaurants reasonable priced? Like what would you say a meal at Ruby's would cost? How about the sugar shack?

Newport and Corona Del Mar which are tied together.

Certainly sounds like Huntington Beach is the place to go. So, what about transportation from DLH? If we do not have a car, is a taxi really the only way? Also, from what I've researched online it looks as though the ride will be approx $50 one-way. Can anyone confirm the pricing for the taxi ride?

We personally love Newport Beach. We usually go to Fashion Island and then head down south about 5 miles to a secluded beach. I can't remember the name, but it is right by the Marriott Newport Beach Villas and Pelican Hill Resort. It is a bit of a walk through a nature preserve, but when you get to the beach, it is gorgeous and very quiet. That is my vote.

The Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, not the Newport Pier is the place to go.

The Balboa Pier area has good dining, the Balboa Fun Zone and the Balboa Island Ferry that you can ride over to Balboa Island for more shopping and dining options.

I find Huntington overrun by grommets and it has more bars than good restaurants.

LOL! The strips and cheese, are just like chips and cheese. They serve salsa with it. Like I said, they are more a tradition for us than anything. :goodvibes

The Sugar Shack is great for breakfast. Not sure on prices, but not too bad. They get busy fast, so be sure to get there early for whatever meal you decide on. Not sure if they are open for dinner. If you want a nice dinner in a Hawaiian like atmosphere, then go to 'Dukes' just at the beginning of the pier. Kind of pricey though.

TravelingJen, I love Newport too. But after, looking at the OP children's ages, I would take them to Huntington. Huntington is the persona of the California Beach you would see on TV. If I were a teen, this is where I would want to be!:cheer2:

Not sure, but I think there is a bus that takes you to the beach from the DL area. :thumbsup2
