Where ya from? inspired by a comment made about Teresa Heinz Kerry

I thought about not answering this because of some feelings people have around here...but I will go ahead.

On my father's side: my grandfather came from Mexico and my grandmother came from Lebanon.

On my mom's side, I really have no idea on that genealogy. That is more mixed and I know there is Welsh, German and some other Eurponean blood from there.

I take after my father's side. ;)

Actually, I consider myself a native American without ethnic labels attached. I don't really like the "_______-American" labels many people use. IF that's the case, then what many consider "native americans" are actually "Asian-Americans", having immigrated across the land bridge from asia to what is now Alaska many moons ago.

I was born in The United States, as were my parents, and Grandparents & Greatgrandparents, etc., etc.

My descendants fought in the American Revolution & the Civil War (not the same ones, mind you ;) ).

My descendants immigrated from Scotland/England in the 17th century.

My DW, on the other hand, as is her family, is tried & true British. My DW was born in Wales, as was her father. Her mother was born in Coventry & grew up in London. She spent time buried in a bomb shelter during the Blitz, and was originally scheduled to be sent to the States on a shipload of British children. HER mother pulled her off at the last minute, and the ship was later torpodoed & sunk in the Atlantic with the loss of almost every child on board.

Great grandparents came over from Poland and Russia. Ended up in Connecticut for many years and then came to Buffalo. I grew up in a very Polish family - both sets of grandparents spoke fluent Polish - especially when they wanted to say something us kids weren't supposed to hear.:p

I'm almost 100% German. One set of great-grandparents (on my Dad's side) came over from Germany. My mom's side is German too, although, I don't know how long ago they came over. I believe there is a little bit of Russian in my blood, but I'm definitely mostly German.

On my dad's side, his mother was 100% Italian. She was the middle child, and the first of all of her siblings to be born in the USA. His dad is Irish and Native American. The Penobscott tribe I think. His family has been in this nation for a really long time.
On my mom's side I'm a complete mutt. All I know is there's German, English, Scottish, Irish, French (Canadian and France) and a little Native American in there. Somewhere along the line one of her relatives came over on the Mayflower. Not sure when the rest of them came.

My ancestors on my Dad's side are from Sweden, Norway and Germany.

On my Mother's side they are from Wales and England.

Most of them got off the ship and headed to the midwest to farm.

The first to arrive got here in the late 1700's and the last was my great-great grandpa in 1858.

My paternal grandparents both emigrated to the US in the 1920s from Northern Ireland.
My paternal grandfather's family has been in this country since about the mid 1700s, by way of southern England. No idea about my paternal grandmother's ancestors.

On my husband's side, his paternal grandparents came here from Portugal. His mother's family is a mix of western European folks who had been in the US for many years.

i'm a euromutt.

in order from greatest to least:

Norwegian
English
Russian
Lithuanian
Swiss-German
Scottish
German-speaking French (Alsace-Lorraine)

My maternal grandfather was a first generation American. his parents were from Russia and Lithuania. My paternal grandmother was also a first generation American. Her parents were Norwegian. OTOH, I am also directly descended from Revolutionary War patriots whose families had lived in New England since the late 1620's. Strangely enough, although I am descended from 6 Revolutionary War veterans, I am not descended from a single Civil War veteran. All my ancestors were out west and too busy with trailblazing to care about the war, I guess. :p

My dad is of Scottish descent. He has even traced the family tree. It's a very interesting line. Someone in it was apparently some type of important leader for a day. My mom is of Asian descent. Her family originally came from China. I want to visit both places some day.

I personally have been adopted by the Jewish community in my area. They have made me feel very welcome in their community, although I am not Jewish. It's nice to feel like part of a something larger than ourselves.:sunny:

My maternal grandfather's family (great-grandparents, maybe) left Ireland during the potato famine. My maternal grandmother's family (her grandparents, I think) left Germany because boys were being forced into the army at 12 and they did not want their sons in the army at such a young age.

A great-grandfather on my father's side came here from Scotland and was only in the country six years before he died, but that was enough time to get married and father three kids. The rest is a mix of Welsh, Irish, German and Swiss.

On my moms side, my great grand parents came here from Czechoslovokia, my grandfather was already born , I think it was in the 30's. Don't know about my fathers side, never met him and never plan to.

My dad's heritage is mixed, English/Irish. That's all I know about them. My mom is full blooded Norweigian, and her grandparents immigrated here. Once they were here (Iowa) they only allowed their children to speak English. They were now Americans, and they wanted to speak this country's language. How times have changed....Some for the good, some-not so good.

Maternal side - Irish and English blend
Paternal side - English mostly with a pinch of Scottish

DH is almost completely Polish with a twist of German.

Can you tell I watch the Food Channel????

A really nice thread!

For most of my life I had NO IDEA where my ancestors were from or even where I was born. I happen to be adopted. Several years ago I did a search to find out all I could about my background and was fortunate in finding my birthmother. Turns out I'm English on her side and German on my father's side. Even know where I was born......North Carolina. :teeth:

way to many generations back, family came from scotland , and germany, on both sides. granddads familys were german on moms side and scotland on dads, grandmothers were reversed moms mom was scot, dads was german

On my father's side we go back to the Mayflower. His family has lived in Eastern MA and Cape Cod forever.... The airport in Hyannis was founded by my grandfather.

My mother moved here from Poland when she was a teenager and settled in Sturbridge, MA. They were from Warsaw and also had a farm in the country.
