Where would you store cases of soda & water?

My son's graduation party is in 8 weeks. I plan on picking up a case of water and soda each week when I go grocery shopping and storing it until the day of the party.

We have a one car garage. Well, "technically" it's my MIL's. She had it built when she did the inlaw apt. And it's where she parks her car. She's VERY particular about "clutter". And therefore, I cannot store these cases in the garage. It gives her anxiety I guess to have "extra" stuff in there.

I'm sure I could find a corner in the basement but not sure if I want to deal with carrying them all down and then back up the day of the party. Would you store them outside on the deck? They should be safe out there, right? I'm thinking this is where I'd want to store them until we need them. But then I'm thinking that by the time the end of June comes along, the cans/bottles would be all hot from the weather. I know it sounds like a stupid question but I guess I'm just wondering if the soda and water will be so warm, will it take a long time to get cold sitting in the ice?

Where would you store them until you needed them?

***ETA: How many bottles of water or cans of soda should I get? I'm inviting 30 people who will more than likely show up. And then my son says he might invite a few kids from school/work. So probably another 10? The party will probably start around noon time and will be a cookout. Some people will probably stay later in the day and we'll probably have a fire....make smores. And I'm assuming there will be plenty of food left over, so we'll have some of the people come back over to eat up the rest of the food. Should I assume 4 each? More? I don't want to not have enough yet I don't want to be overflowing with soda either...

Basement.

Plastic bottles of water that sit out in the sun or in any warmer temps for too long get a plastic taste. The plastic leeches into the water due to the increased temps. Believe me, I know this from personal experience.

I've also read that any soda that contains artificial sweeteners should not be kept in warm temps for too long as it does something to them and can make them taste "off."

I wouldn't store outside or in a garage.

I would just put the money you planned on using for soda each week aside and then the week of the party go and buy it all rather than moving it up and down stairs to the basement!

Good to know. Definitely don't want any funny tasting water/soda.

Genius. LOL Sometimes when you have a million and one things running through your head, you can't see the obvious. This is a good idea. Thanks

Learn from my screwup and 1)buy from a place that allows unopened returns and 2)don't open until you know you need it. That way you can return any extras! (And,yes, I walked back into WalMart after the party with a cart full of 2 liter sodas and 1 case of beer that were never opened.) The extra water we kept and drank up through the summer.

I also planned DS's grad party so it was before the parties of most of his friends. The friends' moms bought most of my decorations off of me that were reusable/in school colors/etc. They got a discounted price, and I recouped a little of my cost.

And make your graduate help, mine was disabused very quickly of the notion that all he had to do was "show up". Yes, we wanted him to enjoy the day, but a little sweat equity didn't kill him...

Good luck, I'm sure you'll have a great party!

Terri

In the heat, Dioxins from the plastic leech into the water and are dangerous.

I have been storing my water in the dining room, along with cases of candy of DDs graduation candy bar. I have been holding off on the pop because most accounts will have pop on sale over Memorial Day weekend, so I am waiting on those sales and will buy mine then. We haven't been able to eat in the dining room for awhile until after the party! Since its just the 3 of us at home now and everyone eats at a different time, it hasn't been a problem.

No I wouldn't store them on the deck. That won't be good for the quality of the product. Get the strapping high school graduate to carry them up and down from the basement. That's the best place for them.

Storing in the heat, let alone sun is a horrible idea. Aside from nasty plastic taste and leeching concerns, soda will go flat in such an environment really quickly.

Basement is the best place.

We store a lot of cases of water and (glass) bottled soda in our attached garage. It sits under one of the bed rooms and only has two sides exposed to the outside world (the doors and one wall).

Stays above freezing in the winter (barely) and except during July-August stays under 80 degrees. That's usually when I move the craft sodas and rootbeers into the panty or basement.

I buy my water and the cases of goose island rootbeer at costco so we usually come home with a couple cases at a time since it's not convenient to our normal driving routines.

40 people isn't a lot of people to stock beverages for but if it's that big of deal buy it the day before, like others have suggested.

As far as the bottled water. I'm shocked in this day an age anyone doesn't already store a couple cases of bottled water already anyway. :confused3 Weird.

I would let MIL know we all make sacrifices for family and that space is needed temporarily.

I would be buying soda an water as they was on sale rather than a case a week, garaged tend to be hot as outside so that is not exactly the best place either. I live in Florida an keep my extras in garage year round tho an not noticed any funky tastes.

Under beds works, floor of closets, guest room corner of most any room, if you do not use dinning room table daily under there.

I personally would wait and just get it the week before the party. I don't think you need several cases, 30 guests are not that many. I might figure 3 cans per person, and at least one bottle of water. My neighbor was stockpiling all different kinds of beverages for his son's grad party and ended up with sooooo much left over. I think he had bottled iced tea and sport drinks too. Way overboard. I am cheap and would probably do a dozen 2 liter bottles, some bottled water and a keg and some wine coolers (definitely having alcohol at my kids' grad parties). Whichever is more cost effective is what I will end up doing (cans vs 2 liters).

I would buy them and store in the basement, but my graduating son would be the one hauling them up and down the stairs! :)

We're planning for ds's grad party too. I say if it's on sale, buy it now and store it in the basement. If there's no sales, set aside the money and buy it a week before the party.

My ds did not want a traditional grad party and we don't have much family around so we're just doing a pizza party, probably 25 - 30 guests, if that. We've decided to do a bunch of 2 liters of soda in an ice bucket, extra ice for those that want some in cups and water bottles. Once in a while the 24 packs of Dasani water bottles go on sale for 3.99 around here so I plan to grab some when that happens and store them in the basement. Whatever is leftover I know we will use.
