Where would you put a portable light when flying?

I'm taking some stuff on my trip that I'm not used to flying with, and am wondering where to put it. One item is a portable desk-type light that we're going to be using to provide lighting for filming some interviews I'm doing for my project. Should that be checked, or put in my carryon? On one hand, it's the type of item I'd think should be checked, but on the other, in an x-ray, that *would* look suspicious and cause a bag-search. Because of that, it would make sense to carry it with me so I can explain what it is and will be used for.

So... carry on, or check?

i would check it, if you didn't think it would get damaged.

i don't even bother trying to pack to prevent the extra searches. the ast time i flew i got extra searches b/c they thought some books in my bag looked suspicious.

By putting it in between clothes, it wouldn't get damaged, I'm pretty sure about that. The only concern I have is for the bulb, which I'm going to remove and put in its own plastic bag.

Thanks Caity.

Tammi, if you don't have to worry about if it would get lost with luggage or not (being the ever pessimist I am with that ;)) then I would check it. I travel with a portable fan and every single time I check it, they search my bag. It's not a big deal to me because I figure from now on they will be checking my laptop as I go through but yes, you would probably get looks and have your bag searched.

I WISH that I had some advice, as my last plane ride was in August 1987 :( :( :( :( How I long to fly on an airplane once again.

Have a good trip.
